The 410 geared head is bloody $225 by itself though! For that much dosh, I could spend a few more bucks and spring for astrotrac's billet-aluminum (I think) wedge head, eh?
Would you consider the 410 geared head pretty essential, or would you consider something like
this heavy duty looking wedge head or
this fairly light one, which is probably inadequate or even
this billet aluminum looking one?
If I've understood tracking correctly, all you need is something to handle inclination. You set up the tripod so that you have zero azimuth, right? And then you incline the system until you're pointing at polaris. The astrotrac rotates the camera mount; the lens automagically points in the same place (if your alignment was well done.)
So it seems to me that all you need is the wedge, if you don't plan on using the geared head for other things, right? Or am I way off?
