If you have a pair of earbuds you really like, buy some of this or a reasonable facsimile and insert the buds, sans tips, into the plugs while they're setting. Once it sets, cut or drill a hole. Bam, inexpensive custom earbuds.

UPDATE: added faceplates: http://imgur.com/ddkg1Ub w/ my initals and channel marking

I made these with the radians kit:

https://www.amazon.com/Radians-CEP001-Custom-Molded-Earplugs/dp/B003A28P4I

Simply follow the instructions (I used half as much material as they said I should, as 1) I have small ears, 2) much of the extra material is being taken up by the IEM)

Then put a cotton wad in the sound tube of the IEMs (to prevent material from going in)

Put IEM's in (without eartip) after inserting putty into ears.

Wait 10 min to cure. Remove from ears and drill out sound tube.

Cut the tube to length. The longer it is the more bass you have, and it attenuates the highs. Shorter is more neutral. I cut them short.

Overall the comfort went up 200%

My right ear must be funny because the seal wasn't as good with both IEM's on that side. I fixed it by using some silicone sealant and a paintbrush to adjust the fit.

Works great and I recommend trying it if you have $10.

As /u/sumo_steve said, if you want BIFL you're best option is likely to be a custom silicone or acrylic plug, ideally built by an audiologist.

Personally I used a do-it-yourself kit from Amazon and the end product should be BIFL, but I assume you would get a better fit and better overall noise attenuation by going to an audiologist.

Note that while the plug itself should be BIFL, my understanding is that the ear canal's shape changes over time so realistically you might need to get new plugs a few years down the road.

Still if BIFL is your primary criteria, silicone or acrylic will last order's of magnitude longer than any foam plug you could buy.

I highly recommend getting molded earplugs for $10 from Amazon for festivals and such. The flesh colored ones are all but invisible.

You need this in your life.

You should look for something that doesn't protrude out of your ears. Those earplugs fit the bill without breaking the bank. You just gotta do the inserts yourself. It's not hard, there are plenty on guides on youtube.

At the price range of a Bose set, there are several options but here's a super cheap one for any IEMs.

näillä tuli tehtyä-itse-ja-säästettyä, kuulokin säilyi tallella.

Tosin rumathan ne olivat.

Evt. “Protip”, fra en med samme udfordringer, som du måske allerede kender: Du kan finde formstøbte “gør-det-selv” kits på nettet til 25 $.

Edit: Link, link og link til nogle typer man kan give et skud.

You can also get ones that you mold to your ear and then they harden. Here's one example but you can find more.

Can't say I've heard of or seen them! Something like this? Two part mix that hardens like in this video? Can you still hear emergency vehicles?

What I don't understand are local laws that forbid having headphones in both ears because it can prevent one from hearing sirens, but I assume you're allowed to wear ear protection.

I might look into that.

I've seen this around for custom molded earplugs: http://www.amazon.com/Radians-CEP001-Custom-Molded-Earplugs/dp/B003A28P4I

Would you have any recommendation for helmet audio?

IEMs look like hearing aids you could tell people they are ;) There are inexpensive make-you-own custom molded earplug kits that come in many colours for like $10 on amazon (examlpe: https://www.amazon.com/Radians-CEP001-Custom-Molded-Earplugs/dp/B003A28P4I). If you search howto make custom IEM or custom earplugs on youtube there are a ton of good videos.

I used these on my cross country roadtrip. They worked like a charm and you can sleep on your side without feeling like the earplug is getting pushed in.
