I picked up one of these and wear it around the house when I'm doing chores. I'm a volly like OP but I subscribe to your philosophy. Sore muscles means I need to train harder. Not go lighter on the PPE. It's a good incentive to work out. I should have been doing that anyway.
I bought this one, and it works well for pull ups and dips.
