Glad I could help. If you don't want to spend the money for an XLR mic right away, for less than the price of a [$321.61CAD VideoMic Pro] (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00YAZHRZM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=B00YAZHRZM&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-20), I recommend the [$265CAD Saramonic VmicRecorder shotgun mic (with built in recorder)] (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01B1QO12Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=B01B1QO12Y&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-20) with a [set of decent headphones] (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000AJIF4E/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=B000AJIF4E&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-20) so you can monitor what you're recording.
Here is a nice test of the mic-only version from Curtis Judd:
As Curtis demonstrates in the video - any shotgun will give you the best results when removed from the camera and mounted on a boom.
If you have someone who can hold a boom, I recommend [this one from OnStage] (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B007V5J5QC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=B007V5J5QC&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-20) with an [OnStage adapter] (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0007Y60HG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=B0007Y60HG&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-20).
Again, hope this is helpful!
Go for a Shure VP83F LensHopper then:

Or a Tascam DR10SG:

Or Saramonic VMIC (but wait for it to go on sale again, then can get it at less than half the price?!):

However.... a very big and important caveat to remember is that while any of these will be a step up from using the internal mics from your camera, this is still only the 2nd worst way to record sound (with using the built in mics from a DSLR being the worst!).
