Not sure why Twilight got mentioned. There is zero sex in it. S Meyer is a Mormon and seems fairly conservative as far as these things go. Bella was a minor in Twilight (although I think she was old enough to consent to sex not sure about Washington state law) and I don't think Meyer would have ever created a story for teens where they are having sex. Even Edward is very old fashioned in that respect. Just holding hands was a big deal for him and Bella. It isn't until later in the series that anything actually happens and there isn't a whole lot of detail. The details of her horrible birthing process are a lot more lurid and unsettling.
Writing is writing. There's good writing and bad. The subject matter doesn't cancel this out. Sci-fi used to be an almost joke genre and fantasy would get eye rolls from 'serious' readers. Those two genres have come a long way in stature and there are some great writers in both.
Romance is another genre that can get short shrift from some readers and even authors- as if it isn't a serious genre. But a few weeks ago, I came across this book-Skin Game by Ava Gray - and decided to read it and it had me hooked right away. The characters were interesting, there was an interesting twist that I wanted to find out more about and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I had been snobbish about not reading something with a man's well-defined abdomen on the cover I would have missed a pretty decent story.
And the point is, there is sex in the story. I think sex definitely has its place in writing. I think too, if you consider whether there is violence in your story- of the graphic type- then it ought to be OK to get graphic in other sectors. I think it's crazy that people will be totally happy reading a description of a guy getting his head pulled off by some monster but then get squeamish when one character is pulling on someone's cock.
I think if that's what you like to write- you should just do it and do it as well as you can.
