Because B12 is a supplement, there's all kinds of crazy information out there, and it's normal to be unsure. Here's some quick tips:

  1. You might not even need one, depending on your diet, but it's a good insurance policy. Omnivores should be taking one, too, for example.

  2. Your foods might already be supplemented with plenty. Double check your plant milks, nutritional yeast, etc.

  3. Methyl- vs. cyanocobalamin doesn't matter because any supplement already has way more than you need. Just get one that's vegan.

  4. You only need 1-5 ug per day and your body can only absorb 10-15 ug per day or so.

  5. Despite this, supplements come in megadoses. 500, 1000, 2500, 5000. It's insane, you're going to pee almost all of it out. Get the smaller dose and take it every few days, you'll be fine.

  6. Focus on safety when it comes to supplement, as they don't have to go through the same controls as drugs, at least in the US. I personally haven't been able to get enough information on this, so I tend to do what you do and buy from one that's popular. I also do a little research on the company in case there have been any issues. None so far, but it's also the kind of thing where consumers are at an informational disadvantage.

    [Edit: consider taking a simple vegan multivitamin with much lower doses, like this: https://www.amazon.com/SmartyPants-Phd-Daily-Multivitamin-Women/dp/B07P8BD7M1. Note that the B12 is only 5 ug. You will probably feel much better with those lower doses. I haven't used them yet, personally, as I bought megadoses before knowing how crazy they were].
