Knives are generally not issued in the service.

As for what kind? Something small will usually be useful, a good majority of servicemembers carry a utility knife.

Honestly, a giftcard is usually the safer option. Some guys can be picky with their blades.

I carried a SOG Trident Tanto for years, It's AUS-8 steel which is holds a solid edge and sharpens easy, the handle is polymer and it has a thoughtfully placed lock and folding mechanism. I made it my work knife/door popper since I bought an Emerson EDC-2.

MSRP for a lot of knives is way higher than what they actually sell for.

Some tridents are even less on BladeHQ.
