I think relocating the set up is the best solution. The width of that space means that these problems have no solution other than relocating. No matter what you do with the desk, you'll still have no arm room and not enough space to sprawl all your papers out.

If relocating is not possible and you need this space to work slightly better, I would suggest:

  1. Mounting the countertops on the walls as suggested in a previous reply would relieve the legroom problem, getting rid of that ledge on the bottom sitting in front of the chair wheels. You can mount them like this and be sure the screw the supporting battens to wall studs.

  2. I would also make the desktop/countertop as deep as I can make and still have the door close with the chair inside. 32~33 inches maybe? You could probably ditch the keyboard shelf and use the extra depth for you keyboard/mouse.

  3. The other thing I would suggest is to mount the PC desktop on the wall or on a shelf above the monitor. You can use one of these if you live in earthquake country, or just put the PC on a well supported shelf if not. This will probably improve leg room and allow better air flow.

  4. I would second the suggestion to wall mount the monitor. Here's a wall mount.

  5. You could hide wires behind walls using a [behind the wall cable organizer kit with power](wall mount tv cable management). Use 2 if you have to - for the monitor and the PC.

  6. I'd install some LED lighting

  7. Go paperless as much as possible. Buy e-text books. Get e-bills. Take lecture notes on iPad pro with the apple pencil like this.

  8. I would also get and mount a second monitor above the first one. If you're lacking physical desktop space, you can go paperless and use additional windows desktop space.
