We used our built in desk as extra storage. I bought a bamboo shoe rack from amazon (it looks like a small shelf) that fit absolutely perfectly under neath the desk, and stored extra kitchen appliances. Link of example. The top of the desk had my toaster oven and knife block. My setup was a little different than yours though; our built in desk was at one end of the kitchen, so kitchen appliance storage didn’t look out of place.
Maybe you can use it for extra storage?
