As an alternative, check out Superfeet. When I was a kid, I had custom made orthotics that were very expensive but definitely helped. Last year, I purchased these by recommendation of a couple of doctors and they are just as effective as my custom made ones! My doctor told me custom made orthotics are often a rip off because they now make plenty of high quality inserts.

I have really flat arches too. I use orthotic insoles These ones to be exact. They're a tad pricey but to get rid of shin splints they're worth it.
