The skin on your knees much like the skin on your feet toughen up. Also, as your technique improves, you become more aware and less prone to dragging your feet and knees.
Spats are helpful as other have said. If you're looking for knee coverage, check out something like this. It's not really a kneepad per-se, but a knee sleeve with a little cushion at the cap. More flexibility and support than a kneepad.
