Description: I own a couple of these, one in black plastic, and one in brass with a gunmetal grey finish. They're pretty cheap and they come with all the caveats of Timex quartz watches: loud ticking, seconds hand not quite lining up with markers, but for the money these things make excellent beater watches. I've taken the plastic one in the ocean, wife dropped the brass one pretty hard on concrete, and save for some scuffs it's still fine. To get anything much more rugged than this you're going to have to spend thousands. A watch like this is just a really great thing to have for when you know the thing will be getting bashed around. As much as people will refer to some entry level or even luxury mechanicals as 'beaters', there are still times where you know for sure the thing is going to get hammered and you wouldn't even want to bring a $200 mechanical, even if it is a 'beater'. They also look really great, are available in a bunch of colours, and are 40mm with 20mm lugs, so getting straps is easy, and they look great with all kinds of nato straps. I personally actually prefer the plastic version, since it's really lightweight, and won't get in the way at all if you're climbing or doing some other kind of strenuous outdoor activity.

Has he hinted at any particular style? I think the Weekender would be an excellent choice. Off the top of my head, here are some additional classic and well respected budget watches.

You've heard wrong. MVMT is the absolute worst company for the price. It is just a chinese watch with chinese movement, nothing new. avoid brands like these, for ex: Daniel Wellington. I suggest you start by looking at Timex, my favorite brand. After that, Seiko, Orient, Citizen etc. I'm giving you amazon links to my favorite ones.

I hope you find what you are looking for, ciao.

u/band_fancier · 7 pointsr/Watches

A Timex Scout should be right up your alley. You can probably get an extra NATO strap and a strap change tool thrown in there and stay around $50 if you go with a cheap strap.

u/AbsolutumDominatum · 3 pointsr/Watches

That's a field watch! Not to many options in that price range but you should check out Times Weekender and Timex Expedition. The Weekender is closer to 40 and a great starter watch that has a NATO (one even comes with an olive one) like the watch you pictures. The Expedition is definitely a field watch and you can easily a put a olive NATO on it.

Here is a great look a like under 40

Ah~ that's a flieger watch design. Most reputable sellers with flieger design will be higher than the price range you are looking for. There is this swatch and seiko 5 which is type B style, which looks like a cross between flieger type A(that you were looking at) and a field watch. They both have a mechanical automatic movement(doesn't need battery and stores energy from your body moving around) and is from respectable watch companies.

There is also this watch from citizen that I suggested recently to another person. It has the clean black dial like the flieger, but is more of a field watch set up. The watch is solar powered, and they run for months even in complete darkness.

Just saw this timex as well, so I'll throw this in here as well. This on is just classic battery powered, and has indiglo so the dial should light up when you press the crown in.

u/seavargas · 2 pointsr/Watches

40mm field watch at the price I’d probably go with a Timex expedition. The indigo feature on timex watches is actually quite convenient at night too.

The Timex Expedition is always recommended on this sub for good reason - got one a few weeks back and it became my instant favourite.

I'm also a fan of my Citizen Avion knockoff.

u/shadowbanningsucks · 2 pointsr/Watches

I don't know what brand or model of watch that is, but there are many similar modern field watches. For example..

Hamilton Khaki mechanical

Timex Expedition quartz.

u/SanDanders1 · 2 pointsr/Watches

Hi.

Looking for a watch recommendation. My budget is ~£40(~US$55), and I'm looking for a quartz luminous analogue watch. Needs to be reasonably waterproof, I work in a bar(hence luminous) and need to wash my hands, make drinks etc a lot. I also need to be able to buy it in the UK.

In the buying guide the best I found was this, however I can't find anywhere to buy it in the UK.

The other one I found was this however I don't really like the straps. I'd rather leather/metal(if possible in the price range).

Edit : Doesn't matter now.

Hi my dudes.

I asked earlier about the G-shock for a field watch but it is too big for my wrist plus I am not so sure about the style anymore. I'm looking for a watch that I will work outside with. I dug a lil about field watches and found some that I am interested. If any of you have an opinion on them (except saying they are cheap watches...I don't want to invest lots of money on a watch what will get in the mud, snow, hit on trees etc):

Seiko 5 SNK805 (I love the brand but for a rough condition field watch I guess it is not optimal)

Timex Expedition Rugged Core

Timex Expedition Scout

Casio AQS810 (I don't like the bracelet but still looks really sturdy)

Timex Expedition field Chronograph (I love the look but I'm not so sure about it's sturdiness)

That being said, if you have better ideas don't hesitate to share your knowledge with me!

I wear an analogue watch, and have for about 15 years. I wore Fossil watches for the first 5 or so, and have worn the one I wear now for the last ~10 years. It's easier to tell about what time it is at a glance with an analogue watch. And really, that's how we think about and understand time, with approximations.

If you are like me, when you look at a digital watch and it says 7:43 pm, your brain will translate that to "about 7:45pm" before it uses the information. So, seeing 7:43pm vs 7:45pm doesn't make a difference in what it means to me. In either case, I know I have about 15 minutes until it's 8 o'clock.

For this reason, I find an analogue watch to be more intuitive/easier to use.

However, if they often need to know precise/exact times (i.e., they need to know that it's 7:43pm and knowing "about 7:45pm" isn't good enough), a digital watch might be a better option. I can't really come up with a scenario where this would be important (and one wouldn't have the time to just look more closely at an analogue watch), but I'm sure someone's job involves this sort of thing.

The thing that I like most about the watch that I've worn for the last decade is that it's low/no maintanence. It's one of the Citizen Eco-Drive watches that runs off of solar power. So in the ~10 years, the only service it has needed is replacing one of the spring pins (and it only needed that because I was a doofus and broke it while removing a link).

But really, you should just ask him. INTJs aren't all the same in their preferences for things. They're similar in that they come up with systems. A watch is a device that they'd be expected to wear all the time, i.e. it would become part of their system. In a bygone age, it would be a welcome part of any person's system (saving them the time of finding a public clock somewhere). But nowadays, everyone is carrying a phone around with them which they can use to tell time, and so they don't see the need to wear a watch, and may even consider it a burden.

TL;DR: INTJs come up with systems, but we don't all come up with the same systems. The only way to know what watch would best fit into your INTJs system (or if a watch would fit into their system at all) would be to talk to them about it.

EDIT: If you really want to get them a watch, maybe consider getting them something like a Timex Weekender or Timex Expedition Scout. They're no-frills, all practical options, and are low enough cost that they can be considered a safe "experiment" to see how he likes having a watch as part of his system. From there, you can find out what he likes and doesn't like, and us that knowledge to get him something more expensive for his birthday or something down the line.

It's from this Timex. The watch broke while I was changing out the battery (maybe I broke it...) but the strap is great.

u/youarestudip · 1 pointr/nursing

I wear this watch with this strap. Super comfortable, 24 hour time is on point, and I've bashed it against dozens of things without damage.

It is super loud, however... Which is kinda weird.

Context, budget, and desired features
I am a mid thirties dad, with a desk job in the maintenance field. I work with my hands very frequently, am outdoors a lot and I normally dress casually. I will wear colored shirts once in a while, and often wear jeans or khaki shorts. I have a fossil watch with a bracelet that I got as a gift about 10 years ogo and quickly stopped wearing it after I got a cell phone. I'm sick and tired of pulling my phone out and being chained to it. I tried a smart watch, but I'd much rather live a simpler life with my EDC. I would like a watch for every single day, in the future, I could see getting a piece with more bling for dressier occasions. My budget is up to $300, but I'd rather be around $200, so that I'm not too hurt if it gets broken or lost.

Movements
As of now I am gravitating to non battery operated due to the cost of battery replacement with a water resistant model costing $70 to keep the guarantee. I realize that I can do it myself most likely, but I want a quality piece, and don't want to mess it up.
I don't mind solar.
Romantically I want a auto, but would prefer one with a winder also.
I'm worried that I would forget to wind a mechanical.

Size
My wrist is around 8 1/4 inch. I prefer a 38-42 mm.

Wanted features
Black dial
A simple face that is not busy
Replaceable strap
Date
Sapphire crystal
Brushed, not polished body
I'm not sure how bracelets work, I don't mind as long as it can be switched out to a nato.
*A black body would be nice, but I'm concerned about the looks of scratches showing though.

What I have looked at
Timex Men's T49961 "Expedition Scout"
I like the looks of this watch a lot, but the overall quality is lacking.

SEIKO 5 SNZG15J1
The only thing that I don't like about this piece is that the numbers are not placed at the outside edge near the bezel.

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8475-26E
I'm not a fan of the large numbers and the painted body will not likely hold up.

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive
I really love this piece other than the polished body

Hamilton Khaki field HML-H69419363
This is a front runner other than being on the small side of my preference and me forgetting to wind it.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto #H70555533
This I like, although I would need to buy used.

Are there any other that you can recommend? The only place that I've really looked is Amazon. I cant seem to find a better retailer.

u/JustCallMeEro · 1 pointr/Watches

My everyday watch is a Timex T49961. Simple, comfortable watch that's easy to read. My only complaint is that when you press for the indiglo, there's a crease at the bottom that doesn't glow- but not a deal breaker.
