> On the back of my Interface there is an SPDIF in and out. Do I only need one cable for the out?

Yes, you only need one cable for the 'out'. SPDIF is a 'multitrack digital format' it usually either contains 2.0 audio or 5.1 surround sound on just one cable.

>Is there a specific cable for SPDIF?

Yes there is - however truth to be told in reality the cable is just a 'high quality RCA' cable. Any high quality RCA cable should work just fine but if you don't have one in the right length you might as well buy one that specifically says SPDIF on it.

> And lastly, would it be best to have a long SPDIF cable into the DAC and a very short RCA?

Yes that's right, the SPDIF isn't very suceptable to noise while the RCA is. So you want the RCA as short as possible. Whenever dealing with unbalanced analog audio cables it's best to keep everything less than 3 ft. Once you go beyond 3ft it's up to how noisy your envirnoment is before it becomes a problem - you might be fine to 10ft but you also might only be able to get 6ft before you can audibly hear noise and hum.

One last note - because of the way this is working you are essentially adding a bit of latency to the entire system. It's not a good idea to try to for example "record" MIDI live over this setup - the latency between when you press a key, it gets routed through your CPU and plugin, back to your audio interface, then out that 30ft cable, then processed again by the DAC may add up to 100 microseconds or more of latency from when you press a key and when you hear it come out the speakers.

This is really not an ideal solution for actually producing. If you can't afford monitors I'd recommend some good Studio quality headphones for when you are recording.
