I have a suggestion for you: Swedish dish cloths. They are a mid point between paper towels and rags. They launder well and last for about 6 months for me with frequent use and many trips through the wash. The cloths dry completely, no funky odors like a rag or sponge. And they polish surfaces nicely, too.
They are a cellulose type sponge, so something similar would also work well, I'd think.
