For gaming, refresh rates mean how smoothly the game is presented, and how many times the screen/Xbox "refresh" the scenes per second. The higher the number, the smoother the image. Each one, monitor and source, affects one another, so if your TV is 60Hz and say you have a glorious PC dishing out 120 FPS (frames per second) on a game, you're stuck at 60 FPS, and vice versa.

Since you're playing on console (Xbox), you won't really be taking advantage of anything over 30 FPS (frames per second) on 1080p. That still is NOT saying a 120/240 Hz TV isn't a solid investment! Sports, action movies and fast scenes will all look better if you set up the TV properly.

If budget is your main concern, try hopping around your local Best Buy/Electronics stores and usually enough (bought all my friend's TV's this way) there is a "Display Model," "Refurbished" or "Open Box" TV available that is significantly reduced in price.

A few years back I got my parent's 52" 1080p (can't remember the model) brand new, just a missing manual, for about 30% off only because it was returned at the near end of the return period, and it wasn't being sold at the store anymore (BB).

Although I can't really recommend anything (on mobile), I would take a look at stores, and stick close to brand names like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and the like... Anything else is pretty much asking for trouble. You pay a bit more, BUT usually have a better warranty/support service.

Hope this helps. Also, for the budget you have, anything higher than 120Hz (Native) is going to be a bit more.

EDIT: I found-

I believe it's a real 120Hz display. Here's the link if you're interested in checking it out http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-M422i-B1-42-Inch-1080p-Smart/dp/B00JJNA10I

Some examples of 240Hz TV's I could find: 1 2 3 4

I'm now noticing that even though these TVs claim 240Hz, a couple refer to it as "Clearscan 240Hz" Which I assume means they aren't really 240Hz. However those two Samsung TVs both say Native 240.

What I guess I was really getting at is it feels to me that the refresh rate for TV's has gone up to 120 on standard and for monitors 60 is more common. It may just be my perception of things though.

Thanks for all the comments here guys, awesome feedback per usual. I'm most likely going to end up on one of these:

LG 6300

VIZIO M422i-B1

Samsung UN40H6203

If any of you own of these and are unhappy with it, please let me know :)

Cheers,
