The thing is, you don't have to lug around a bulky pair of headphones to get good audio quality.

In ear monitors can provide amazing sound. I actually prefer them over full size headphones. I have a few pairs of Custom In Ear Monitors, which are basically what musicians wear on stage; they are custom molded to your ears for perfect fit and isolation.

However, if you don't want to break the bank and take a leap of faith in that direction, there are plenty of more reasonably priced universal fit monitors; I never hesitate to recommend the VSonic GR07 as a fantastic bang for your buck, and there's also the bass edition if you want a little more oomph in the low end; I actually bought these for my mom and she loves them....she was killing her ears with apple earbuds for years prior.

But there are hundreds of different sound signatures to be found in IEMs; if you are at all interested, I suggest heading over to head-fi.org and digging around the forum. They are generally really helpful people and there are some great threads with comprehensive reviews of the best earphones at different price points.

It's also worth mentioning that properly fitted in ear monitors can help slow damage to your hearing; the better the fit and isolation, the lower volume you can play your music, especially with proper amplification.

VSONIC GR07 Bass Edition

A little pricey, but sound fantastic. Don't get hot or sweaty.
Come with these around-the-ear add-on pieces that I like to wear because it keeps them in place.

Yeah I know what you mean by that, most headsets are tight because they don't want to let sound out. I'd suggest these for earbuds and These for headphones, they're on ear so they shouldn't be so tight.

Are these the ones you mean for the bass edition? I like their look, perhaps I'll try them out on your recommendation!

I noticed that the GR07s have two editions: the regular ones and the enhanced bass edition. Which one do you recommend? I read both the reviews on Head-fi and I'm torn between the regular ones that come with a hard shell case and the bass editions that don't.

Budget: About $130, could maybe go up to $150.

Source: Mostly my phone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Requirements for Isolation: I would like a lot of isolation since I'll be using them in very noisy environments.

Preferred Type of Headphone: IEMs.

Preferred Tonal Balance: I listen to mostly rap/hip-hop, so a like bass, but also want them to be well balanced.

Past Headphones: Nothing note-worthy besides Beats Studios and a pair of Bose Freestyle, neither of which I really enjoyed. I'm very, very new to the headphone world, but am looking for IEMs to introduce me.

Preferred Music: Like I said above, the majority is rap/hip-hop.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up: I don't really have a set up right now, but I'm currently using very cheap, low quality earbuds, so everything lol. Specifically sound quality and comfort.

Currently Eyeing: I'm currently looking at the VSONIC GR07 Bass Edition, but I don't think that they have an in-line mic/remote, which is important because I won't always be able to pull my phone out to change a song. If I had to buy IEMs without an in-line mic/remote, it wouldn't be a big problem, but it would be a nice feature to have.

Hey guys. I'm a commuter student with a love for music. I need something to listen to my Spotify on my metro and bus rides. Seems to me like the only options for me are collapsible over-ear headphones or an IEM.

  • Budget - $100-$200 (Eager to lean towards $175 if the bang for the buck is good)

  • Source - Samsung Galaxy S4

  • Requirements for Isolation - Public transportation is noisy, but I don't care enough to specify a fancy noise-cancelling can

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - I'd prefer an IEM that doesn't go around the ear (I wear glasses) but I'd be open to over-ear closed headphones too, if they aren't too bulky. Either works.

  • Preferred tonal balance - I like a punchy bass that doesn't interfere with the melodic mids and highs. I like the strong foundation the lows provide in my type of music.

  • Past headphones - I like my current Astro A40's but the soundstage is too open for intensive listening and it lacks the full sound I like.

  • Preferred Music - I range from Alt-Rock to hard EDM. Here's my spotify playlist for those of you that can open it. Get to the more recently added songs for a more relevant taste.

Sunlight - Bag Raiders An example of the lighter EDM I enjoy, note the the strong beat.

Tightrope - Walk The Moon Note again the need for a strong bass in the definitive beat and pulse of the song, however there's a risk of the bass overpowering the melody

Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand Alt rock, or the primary victim of a bass that doesn't know it's place

Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet More of my rock that needs a responsible bass.

I've scoured the lists and come up with a few cans that may do the job, however I'm light on an IEM option.

  1. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x It seems pretty popular, but harsh on transportation.

  2. Audio-Technica ATH-PRO700MK2 I've heard about the bass on this and I like it. Again, there's the issue of transportation. They seem pretty bulky like the Beyer DT 660 I also have my eyes on.

The pair of IEM I've seen that I kinda like are the VSonic GR07 However I have little information on them and other IEMs.

    Thanks a lot guys!
