I have quite an extensive collection of yard and shop tools that I use for their specific tasks and there are several great resources on what you should have in your shop and shed on both youtube and here on reddit. The items below are things I use daily on my homestead and would suggest looking into for yours as well.

Taking from the popular EDC EveryDay Carry folks, I propose HSC, HomeStead Carry:

  • A pen, I like the Pilot G2

  • A notepad I use the Rite-in-the-Rain style I am coming to realize that my ADHD brain while quite good at remembering things, sometimes forgets to remember when I am at the Hardware Store, or Feed Store about that one item that I saw I needed last week.

  • A good pocket knife. (I don't want to get into which one, I have seen too many debates on this.)

  • A good pair of leather work gloves. Costco has this 3 pack for under 20 bucks, in store, that are great. I have only worn through one of the 6 gloves so far. If only I could stop forgetting where I put my left hand gloves.

  • I love my Klein's Linesman pliers.

  • Zip ties These items are very helpful at temporarily fixing things and come in a variety of sizes for different uses. I have at least one of these bags at all times, and try to keep several larger sizes in stock as well. I will admit to using these to put up a "temporary" wire fence while I am building my cedar fence, they have lasted for over a year. Makes for quick fence moving and it is lighter to carry 25 of these than a roll of bailing wire.

  • I also try to carry one of these multi-bit screw/nut drivers with me as it saves trips back to the shop for something you didn't know you needed.

  • While on the homestead I am usually wearing a pair of double-front carpenter pants from Carhart with a pair of suspenders to keep them up with all of the items I carry, these allow for working in all circumstances and offer good protection against scrapes and pokes.
