I'm actually going to do this next week myself, only I'm going to just use the "hack" method with this drive. If you have access to a PC with an SATA connection on it, it looks pretty easy to do. And I believe there are instructions here.

The beauty is when you get your new mac, you can pop this into a $10 external case and have extra storage.

It's rather simple to repair, and if you have amazon prime you can get a replacement harddrive for under $50. Here is one.

There are easy tutorials for repairing a hard drive at www.ifixit.com

It's not a dumb question at all. Honestly I just broke down and got the transfer cable because it seemed like the easiest guaranteed way to move all my data from one place to the other. The only other solutions I saw were knock-off cables that allowed you to do the transfer via PC, but most of the info from customer feedback was extraordinarily negative.

Because the Xbox drives are formatted in a certain way, it's not quite as simple as just plugging it in SATA and moving your data from one to the other. In the interest of full disclosure, I just put my old 20GB drive in a SATA enclosure and it was recognized by the PC but was unreadable. Computer Management within Windows says the disk is not initialized and it shows no partitions and 18.6GB of unallocated space.

I can tell you though, if you're going to grab a new hard drive and try this yourself, don't make it any more of a hassle than it needs to be. Grab an enclosure (like this one) through either a vendor online or get a broken drive on eBay, grab a WD drive that's not an unusual size, and get the official transfer kit either in a reputable store. Even spending full price on the transfer cable, you're still $50 short of the Microsoft price.
