There's a brilliant book I'd wholeheartedly recommend called 'When Prophecy Fails' which has a lot to say about the typical human response to extreme cognitive dissonance. To say the least, I think it's relevant here.
There's an article here which is also on the same subject. In-group/out-group politics is an insanely powerful thing.
EDIT: It's nicely summed up by the following quote from the book: "If more people can be persuaded that the system of belief is correct, then clearly, it must, after all, be correct." Classic Argument from Authority.
I'd also add:
You can only hope, but then there's When Prophecy Fails.
Just said this somewhere else... but
>Christianity: 2000 years of "any day now". Every generation thinks its living in the end times. Except the ones that were wrong are not around anymore to admit it.
---
>what happens to the church in the year 2500?
What happens when say, jesus makes a prophesy that he'll return in the lifetime of the apostles? Oh right, they ad hoc that "john" is supposed to be still alive... 2000 years old... in hiding.
Yea... 2000 year old guy avoiding detection for that entire time (and remaining sane without human contact) is much more likely then a bunch of illiterate sheep herders making up some stories that you've put so much stock into you've painted yourself into a corner.
*epic facepalm

Apparently this is supposed to examine this phenomena in detail. Have not gotten around to reading myself.
