Couple of really cheap things you can do.
Get something like THIS remote control. Allows you to control 3 different lights/appliance with 1 remote. The link is for a two-pack of these, so 2 remotes, six power outlet adapters all for under $40.
Now get some cheap lamps, small ones, preferably ones you can aim. Hit your local thrift shop or garage sale.
Put the lamps behind your couch, or in a corner behind a book case, behind your TV. The idea is to get them behind something so there is no direct lighting.
It's super cheap, super DIY, but it has a good effect if you have limited funds.
