I think you're overplanning it. There's so many styles of game you should just let him choose what he likes. Here's a few points:

  • NES and SNES games were often really hard. You definitely shouldn't start with those for a really young kid, he will not enjoy them. There are some really simple games these days that are far more suitable - especially if you invest in an iPad.
  • People always think Nintendo games are for little kids, but almost all of them need reading ability, and my kids couldn't play any of them until they were at least 6 or 7. (Unless of course you don't mind sitting reading everything to them.)
  • (Ocarina of Time scared my boy when the skeletons came out of the fields.)
  • The first game both my boys played on their own was 3D Ultra Mini Golf on the 360. It's a cartoon golf game - you move the stick side to side, then press the power button. You have to learn when to let go at the right point. (Also don't buy number 2 - they made it so every time you miss a shot you get booed, and my boys hated that)
  • Playing the Lego games in co-op was loads of fun. The graphics all hold up, and you can get them all pretty cheap.
  • World of Zoo is another great one for little kids. There's not much gameplay - it's cleaning, feeding and unlocking zoo animals, but my kids loved it. (Similar: Nintendogs)
  • When they were a bit older, just driving around the open world of Burnout Paradise City. The crashes are violent, but there's no people to get hurt.
