Running barefoot often helps teach proper running technique. Don't assume you can run as far as you can with shoes though initially. Start slow with low mileage. Slowly build up as your feet adjust.

Also save up for some minimal shoes. I'm currently running in these and they feel great. Very similar to barefoot, yet with a nice thin layer of rubber to protect from glass, metal, sharp rocks, etc.
