You are suggesting that Nvidia knew about the tariffs before the Trump administration did. That's impossible. The price will go up as GamersNexus has already talked with board partners about this very issue.

The price of the cards are high because Nvidia wants your money, not because they can read the president's thoughts.

EDIT

For example

$1,900 for the cheapest 2080 Ti in stock on Amazon. Other models are going for much more.

You can also set up for the second pre-order wave on this zotac card.

Yes, a majority of every game I've ever purchased in recent memory - my 2080Ti coming in will be the first time since the 500 series I haven't ran SLi, and might now even down the line when they are more available. Currently have Titan-X SC's in SLi. Every game I've ran across and play supports SLi on most modern engines - some scale better than others, but it does work. Generally I see anything from a 5% increase to an 80% increase depending on the game and engine. Some need some simple "tweaks" to get the SLi working by applying an older SLi profile from a previous version of thew game to the newest or from a different game on the same engine.

But SLi is for enthusiast who don't mind tinkering on occasion, it's always been that way and it FFFFAAAARRRR easier and more widely supported than people realize now. As far as what games I play without tinkering, Farcry 3/4/5 & Primal, PUBG, Witcher 3, COD franchise, Battlefield Franchise, Shadow of War, Dark Souls Franchise, pretty much anything that runs on the Unreal or Unity engine (with the exception being VR but there's other considerations for that), Assetto Corsa, Rainbow Six Siege, Metal Gear Solid, The Crew 1/2, The Division, Wildlands, X-Plane 11, ATS, FS17, ET2, No Man's Sky, Doom..... I can probably dig up a lot more but those are the ones I've played a lot in recent memory....the only three that I remember I would even need/want SLi but there didn't seem to be any good working methods was Assassin's Creed and Wolfenstein which was locked at 60FPS anyways - and Just Cause 3 - but I wasn't really needing more than I was getting.

With all that being said the more complicated your setup the more issues you're going to run into. For instance SLi being weird on BF1 launch or the Farcry 4 launch. However I'm a firm believer in not running SLi on anything but the top end - because when you do run into that one game you want to play but doesn't support SLi you have total crap performance unless you're on a top tier card. You're setting yourself up for an upset in that case.

And yes - if you're coming from anything from a 1070+ to the 2000 series you would be making a horrible decision not to move into a 2080Ti. ESPECIALLY if you actually plan on using DLSS and any raytracing that comes along - even then I think at a minimum raytracing isn't going to be terrific when/if it actually starts showing up in force on this generation. So if $400 is worth peace of mind to me, and it is, that would leave you only one issue - the Zotac 2080Ti are on pre-order on Amazon now with Deliveries for the 14th. EVGA has had pop up's at least twice a week, if you have a microcenter near you they seem to keep 1-3 Asus cards in at any given time etc.

I ordered an FE card - but I water cool all my stuff so the cooler didn't matter and everything out now is all reference designed anyways. Not sure how you handle your money - but selling stuff to get money to upgrade is not a "free" upgrade. $800 is $800 - which makes only $400 coming from your bank account a lot less hurtful than $1200 - but you're spending the money either way. Just don't be surprised if you were actually utilizing that SLi setup to not see a 50% gain is all I'm saying. In my opinion it's not a smart move unless you're going to a 2080Ti - especially considering spending an additional $400 could get you ~100% performance increase.....at those points it's insane to cut yourself short - at least in my opinion. The best move I ever did was to stop sacrificing on my video cards and always getting the top end when it's time.
