Except for the bit where it's a middle grade novel, Newbery and everything.

Seeing as My Side of the Mountain and Island of the Blue Dolphins got their requisite mentions, I'm surprised there's no discussion of Brian's Winter, the alternate ending/sequel where he has to survive the season.

Listing these titles is also making me realize
exactly how many Worthy MG Books presented around grade 4-6 focus on wilderness survival. Coinciding with Voyage of the Mimi* survival episodes in class, for that matter.

Also, the Boxcar Children are brats? D:

Wow, this is real Amazon sells it. Maybe Steve should host it for the book club?

u/SpineBag · 1 pointr/Montana

This might be a little heavy for a 9-year-old, but I highly recommend Soun Tetoken, a story about the Nez Perce as told by a young Nez Perce boy. Much of the action of the story takes place in Montana, including the Bitterroot Valley, Yellowstone National Park, and the Front Range.

u/TheVicSageQuestion · 1 pointr/tipofmytongue

This is the only thing I could find. I don't think it's quite what you described, but, maybe it will help.

u/Fafnesbane · 6 pointsr/comicbooks

Scandinavian here, how old is someone in K-3? Not sure how different the systems are in the US.

EDIT: Okay, 5-9 year olds

  • Asterix by Goscinny and Uderzo

  • Lucky Luke by Morris

  • Tintin by Hergé

  • Marsupilami

  • Spirou and Fantasio

  • Adventure Time

  • My Little Pony

  • Batman Lil' Gotham by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs

  • Itty Bitty Hellboy by Art and Franco

  • Tiny Titans by Art and Franco

  • Superman Family adventures by Art and Franco

  • Any Disney comics by Don Rosa and Carl Barks

  • Bone by Jeff Smith

The franco-Belgian ones are very popular in Scandinavia, but I'm not sure how well they are printed in the US.

EDIT: added links to the FB comics I could find

I have three available on amazon:

Bread for the Pharaoh This is the first one I published, and doesn't quite hew to the "ordinary people against ordinary problems" formula. But it's still a cracking good ancient Egypt story. :)

Pebblehoof This one fits the mold a lot better. A nobody immigrant family pitted against mid-19th century railroad robber-barons.

Blackpelt Talking animal adventure about a beaver on the run from a fur trapper. Definitely in the mold of the wider world gives zero shits about whether the beaver lives or dies.

These are all middle-grade novels, but I've had a surprising number of adults tell me that they too got sucked into the stories.

Probably more like "not luxurious."

Like George Washington.

I think the theme you're thinking of is "Against the Elements." On that note...

Mountaineering

The [Everest Trilogy]() by Gordon Korman tells the story of a group of five teenagers who won a contest with the ultimate prize--scaling Mt. Everest. Two of the five have the chance to be the youngest scaler of Everest of all time. One of the five doesn't make it home.

Wildfire

Caroline B. Cooney's Flash Fire will raise your pulse and break your heart. The denizens of a gated community try desperately to flee a rapidly moving wildfire as it travels down the mountainside, towards their homes, burning everything in its path.

Earthquake

The aptly-named Earthquake Terror follows siblings Jonathan and Abby as they're alone on a camping trip, after their father took their mother to the hospital, after she broke her ankle. Then an earthquake hits. Not just any earthquake--the Loma Prieta quake of '89. Jonathan must keep himself and his sister alive, and safe, as they're stranded. And then the island begins to sink.

Quake is set during the Loma Prieta earthquakes as well, and I actually find it superior to the more well-known Earthquake Terror. Home alone, babysitting her bratty brother Sidney and struggling to reconnect with her old friend Jennie, Franny finds herself forced to make many more adult decisions than she ever wanted to imagine.

Escaping the Giant Wave, also by Peg Kehret, the author of Earthquake Terror, features Kyle and BeeBee vacationing on the Oregon coast. Then, an earthquake hits, followed immediately by a broken gas line catching their hotel on fire. And then, the tsunami alarms sound...

Plane Crash

Caroline B. Cooney's Flight# 116 Is Down is similar to Flash Fire, jumping across many characters in the hours surrounding a plane crash in the Connecticut woods. Harrowing and heart-pounding.

You should totally read this during your smokes. It will give your brain an adventure.

u/minus000 · 2 pointsr/steampunk

This novel. It really lays down a lot of common themes and ideas before any of the more conventional alternatives.

> you guys are almost more obsessed with the Wild West and cowboys than we are

For good reason.

Could you be thinking of The Ransom of Mercy Carter? I remember reading this around the same age and my copy had a different cover, but this one does feature a body of water: https://www.amazon.com/Ransom-Mercy-Carter-Caroline-Cooney/dp/0385740468/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0/137-1266025-8480011?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZTWTFV5NHQPVSC00GGRB

Oh, I know what you mean! This is from the Time Warp Trio series—the particular book you're talking about is The Good, the Bad, and the Goofy. The kids going on different adventures through time, and the Old West cowboy setting of this specific book, all line up.

The American Girl Series, specifically Kirsten, who I just found out was discontinued as a doll in their catalog in searching for this :(
