No problem! I love this kind of stuff! Neon tetras is what you had? Those are great beginners but they are kind of small. Platties are a good beginner fish that do best in groups of about 3 or 4, especially in a ten gallon. They get to be about 2-3 inches long, and come in many bright, beautiful colors! They also look really pretty when the tank is decorated! Black skirt tetras are also really hardy, and do well in groups! If you wanted variety, you could also throw in a mystery snail or two!

Tanks are pretty easy to shop for. Honestly, the best place I have found is amazon. There are two routes to take. The first is that you could buy all of the parts separately, or you could buy a kit with most of hte stuff oyu need. For beginners, I definitely reccomend getting a kit. This is a pretty good kit that runs pretty cheap! You'll also need a heater for a 10 gallon tank. I use this one because it can be placed either along the wall of the aquarium or along the bottom. You'll also need substrate, or gravel/sand for your aquarium to make it look really nice and to give good bacteria a medium to grow on! This is essentially a preference for what you want your tank to look like! I use this because I like to make my tank look pretty natural, but it is entirely up to you! The most basic rule is you need about 1 pound of substrate per gallon of aquarium. Also, you need to get a gravel vacuum to clean the gravel. I use a small one for my tank because it lets me be more precise. You'll also need some water conditioner to make your tap water safe for fish! Some people use aquarium salt in their tanks, but I've found it's not entirely necessary. You'll also want to get some plastic/silk plants for your tank! Live plants are preferable, but with a 10 gallon tank fake will be fine! Silk is usually recommended because it has less of a tendency to rip fins, but plastic works fine!

So, essentially the bare bones of what you need are:

  • 10 gallon tank kit ~$70 (if you go to places like PetsMart or PetCo, you might be lucky and find one on sale for like $30-$50!)
  • 10 gallon heater ~$15
  • About 10 lbs of substrate or gravel ~$15-$20
  • Water conditioner ~$12
  • Fish food (flakes, pellets, blood worms, etc.) ~$4
  • Gravel vacuum ~$8
  • Decorations ~$10-$20 depending on how much you want in your tank

    Total: ~$130

All of these prices are from Amazon and my own experience, and can vary greatly from store to store. Especially during sales and such. You might get lucky and get all of this stuff for less that $100! It really does depend on where you are and what's available around you!

If you have any other questions, please let me know!

Fear cuts deeper than swords!

Grey Tribble!

Reminiscent of rain. If you turned a sound machine on and set it to "spring rain" and put this on you'd think your face was actually being caressed by gentle cooling drops of relaxing rain. :)

Weird food Haggis flavored chips. What? I love tasting new stuff. This intrigued me. :)

For my mom She loves horses. I once gave her an ornament with a horse on it that meant a lot to her. It's become sort of a tradition to get her an ornament as part of Christmas. This one is soo pretty. :)

Book! If you've watched the show I don't have to sell this too hard. :) I LOVE this show and really really want to read this book!

Less than $1. Technically... Digital delivery is a delivery method. It's not a food, polish, or anything to do with my hair. ;)

Cat related!

This key does nothing useful, but it looks awesome!

Across The Universe (movie). I had a friend who had the soundtrack. We listened to it pretty often. It's worth a watch just for the music alone, but it's a great watch. :)

Useful for zombies? Maybe? It's a knife that fits in your wallet like a credit card. It's at least a weapon that you could always have on you so you're ready at a moments notice. :) If only they made a credit card size folding flame thrower. ;)

Life changing. I need to be less fat... :/ This would definitely help.

Add on. My hedgehog loves these!

This is my second most expensive. My most expensive was the one for not being fat... lol. Before I used a wishlist I just added stuff to my cart and then saved it for later. This is the oldest item I've had stashed away. Every camping trip or competitive horse ride I went on with my mom/parents always involved sitting around the fire talking before heading off to bed. Whenever I get the chance to see them (we live in different states now) we still sit around a fire. This just reminds me of good times spent with family and essentially being home...

Bigger than a breadbox. For side table fishy times! :D

Smaller than a golfball. I'm obsessed with stars. I really love this ring. :)

Good smell! I bought the lotion and body spray on a whim when I was at the mall a while back. This stuff smells sooo good. It's like summer time!

Safe for work toy. These things look really neat. I saw them mentioned somewhere else and googled to see what they were. The video makes them look pretty cool. :)

I'm always late for class, but if I had a watch that I couldn't stop looking at I might just make it on time. ;)

Speaking of "can't stop looking at"... I'm obsessed with Doctor Who and David Tennant. :D

I added this to show someone else... I think it's crazy that they even make these. There's an appliance for everything! What beats fresh donuts anytime you want them? NOTHING! That's what... This is why I need that elliptical.. :P

Pm'd what I think is your name! :D

I got my Sammy at Petco and while he was kind of skittish and lethargic for the first week, after seven or so days in a filtered, heated, 5 gallon tank he was the coolest little guy- loved to come up and say hi, watched people all the time, super interactive. Like having a puppy in fish form. Also he was the cutest mofo ever.

That said, I'm only buying fish from a local place I found now, just because they're so awesome. Comparable prices, but way more knowledgeable and more selection; all their fish are happy and healthy (none of those I-wish_I-were-dead bettas!) and just a cool place to go look at stuff. If you can find a place like that, I'd highly recommend it!

*I almost forgot about the tank! I have this one, with a custom-cut glass lid that a local shop did for me for $15, and I have this heater. I LOVE it, it works great, and Sams looked so elegant in there (now that Sammy's gone, it's the home to two dwarf puffers who also seem to love it). Some may say that heater is overkill, but I went through three others of increasing wattage (including the one made for the tank), and none had the kind of horsepower I needed to get my tank to a safe temperature up from the ~50-60 degrees it is in my room in winter. When I was younger, I had this tank,, which comes with the lid already. I think that lid is really pretty important- my first betta died by jumping, and aside from being really sad, I found him in the morning, after he'd dried...to the carpet...and was a bit difficult to peel off. So kind of added insult to injury.

Either way, I'd definitely recommend starting with a kit, as it really just tends to be cheaper to get them all together. I like real plants, but I always ask for low-light ones myself-I am just too lazy to get extra lighting! But the real plants can help keep things happy and healthy, especially in a tank that small. I use sand over a planting substrate, because sand was nice and soft for my froggy and the substrate was what the plants wanted.

Hope this helped! I realize it's a TON of info. TL;DR, Petco fish can be fine if you don't pick a sick one and take care of them; 5g tank should really be the minimum; tank kits are going to be easier and cheaper; don't forget a heater!

u/jynnjynn · 6 pointsr/bettafish

Depends on how much you can spend, but I really like this tank for a 3gallon tank. It's attractive, reasonably priced, real glass, and it comes with the filter and a light that is strong enough to grow the lower light easy plants that are popular in betta tanks (anubias, java fern/moss, marimo balls, whatever)

You will also need a heater, unless you live somewhere where the ambient temp where you keep the tank is going to be in the mid to high 70s year round. It is kind of tough to heat a tank as small as 3gallons without overheating, but I have had really good luck with this heater. Its the smallest heater with a thermostat ive found, so it will turn itself off when it reaches the desired temp. Bettas are tropical fish and will do best with their water around 78 to 80 degrees.

Easiest way to change the water is going to be buying a siphon, or just a ~3' long piece of fountain tubing from the hardware store, and using it as a siphon, and then pouring clean, treated water back in with.. whatever thing you wanna use to pour water in your tank :P

u/ky1e · 10 pointsr/Aquariums

The betta in the picture is Murphy, he's been my fish for one year now. Before now, he was in a bowl. No filter, no heater, no light. I changed half the water once a week and fully cleaned the bowl once a month, but beyond that I was not treating Murphy properly.

The last few weeks Murphy wasn't looking good. His fins became small and didn't fan out, he just hung out in his cave all day. I didn't want to lose him, so I decided to finally get a proper tank. All of my friends tell me "No, Bettas are just fine in a bowl, they're made for that," but from reading online and seeing them in stores, bettas are not supposed to be in bowls.

So here's my setup:

  • Tank: Fluval Spec 2 gallon -$45

  • Heater: Fluval 25w compact -$20

  • Decoration: White rocks, plastic plant, rock cave ~$15

  • Fish: Basic betta fish -$3

Yeah yeah, it's a lot for a 3 dollar fish, but I like Murphy a lot and I'm happy to see him happy. In the new tank he moves around, he's starting a bubble nest, and he eats. The difference in his behavior is night and day. And the Fluval Spec is a pretty sweet tank, it's got a built in filter, pump, and light, and it looks great.
u/chibisun · 1 pointr/bettafish

I just wanted to say, it sucks that this responsibility was thrust upon you but you seem like a great person who is really trying to do the best for his betta!

I know you said you're low on money, but sometimes Petsmart or Petco will have a dollar per gallon sale so you can get a 5 gallon for $5 or 10 gallon for $10 (I actually only have a 3 gallon because I am a poor college student, but plan on upgrading as soon as I graduate).

I have a more expensive heater to keep the tank at a stable temperature but before that I used this one and a cheap thermometer.

Your betta will be ok! It seems that you are trying your best for him and bettas are more resilient than we think :)

u/bamboozler48 · 1 pointr/Jarrariums

I have a dwarf in a 3 gallon with a beta, he dominates the bottom and the betta dominates the top (predators typically leave each other alone, but this is not always the case tho make sure your the betta is dosile). HOWEVER the dwarf cpo is a fragile lil guy he needs tons of food, hiding space (to molt), live plants (to eat), lots of moss (to eat), and exceptionally clean water at 200 tds. I have sucessfully kept mine for several months in such a small environment, but its no jarrarium. The water runs through 3 layers of charcoal filtering to keep him happy, annnnd I have the tank heater to 78 degrees. There great pets to own, but Im nearly certain he would die in a filterless ambiently heated environment

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00891I1Q2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4anPzbTSF1SGW

This is the smallest tank I've managed to keep one alive in with a bit of tweaking on the filter. This is a fairly inxpensive rig, it's pretty low tech in terms of lighting. So I advise keeping it near a window for cheap yet effective light.

So in conclusion i highly advise raising one of these guys there a riot to watch (so cute :3), but if your hearts set on a jarrarium use either neo shrimp or snails. If you can get a filter in the jar potentially fish.

u/flizomica · 7 pointsr/bettafish

You might be able to order it online and pick it up at the store. Otherwise I'm struggling to find a kit that fits the budget that isn't completely crap quality.

You really want a 5g min for long-term care, but a 2.5g tank is a better alternative than a bowl. This heater is a good choice.

The 5g version of that tank would of course be much better, but I don't know what your friend can afford.

Make sure he gets some hides too - live plants ideally, but silk plants are fine too. No plastic plants!

u/reinvented · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would be thrilled to receive any of these! Thanks.

  1. Metal detector For searching with my nephews and friends. This would be heaps of fun for everyone. Prefer used, $88.

  2. Kitchen safe Brilliant invention for dieting, saving money, pet treats, etc. Personally I'm cutting back on junk food.

  3. Pet stroller I love my friend's pets, cats and a dog.

  4. Complete aquarium I want fish to liven up my living room.

  5. Humane trap For helping stray cats.
u/great_cornholio_13 · 2 pointsr/PlantedTank

The Fluval Chi might be a good tank, but might be more difficult to find a good light to fit it.

I'd recommend the ADA substrate system. It's more expensive than Fluval but ultimately worth it.

As for a filter, the tank I've suggested has one built in, but if you don't go for that, then YES! If you've got critters in it, filter the water. (Also get a heater!)

I'm currently running a Fluval Spec 19L using a combination of this substrate, along with the power sand and some other substrate additives (all sold on that site). I'm growing HC Cuba (dwarf baby tears) and it's doing well with plentiful CO2 using one of these and lots of light with two of these.

https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Chi-Aquarium-Kit-5-Gallon/dp/B003TM1BAE

Buy a 5 gallon tank like this. Get some gravel and some low maintenance plants (cryptocorynes and anubias). Just make the tank look as nice as possible. The nicer it looks, the higher your chances your boss will reimburse you and expense the cost of the tank.

There are cheaper tanks out there. You can make a pretty nice 5 gallon setup for less than $100. Making it in less than $100 seems like it could be reimbursed easily.

u/DerpyCubone · 1 pointr/Aquariums

Hello! I'm looking to start a 20G tank with a Betta and a few tank mates that will play nice. Along with some easy to care for live plants. I've found 2 starter kits on Amazon and was wanting to see if these would be good place to start. There is this one and then This second one. I don't think either comes with a heater so I would have to snag that. Basicly wondering if the filters and lights will be enough or if it would be way cheaper to buy all the parts by themselves.

u/s1ugg0 · 1 pointr/Aquariums

I was looking at this eco-aquarium But I know it's common for people to keep fish in tanks that are FAR too small. I don't want to be one of those people. Can anyone recommend any animals that would be comfortable living in a tank this size? Or is this just a gimmick that hurts your pet? I want to do this right and I have no interest in harming an animal for my own amusement. I'm a responsible pet owner so I'm doing my research. So any advice you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

u/Ralierwe · 3 pointsr/shrimptank

Something doesn't match: it's either 2.6 gal or 15x15x15 cm (0.9 gal, Marine Cubus). Looks like 2.6 gal, though.

I would add much more plants, stemmed, floating, mosses. Dwarf shrimp feed on biofilm, growing on tank surfaces. They also will provide more shelters for babies and molted adults, that are vulnerable.

Cholla wood, Indian almond leaf (or any other leaf litter, suitable for shrimp), maybe snowflake pellet, there are DIY kinds too.

Feeding dish, like Petri dish, should help to keep substrate cleaner.

More intense light, warmer spectrum (6700K max) will allow microalgae grow faster.

Main essentials are:

  • water, suitable for this kind of shrimp

  • cycled tank

  • slow changes, shrimp die from too big or too fast changes

  • knowing how shrimp keeping differs from fish keeping. See more on this subreddit.
u/dabeezkneez · 2 pointsr/bettafish

He's currently living in this guy but I was looking into this one. Please let me know if that's an acceptable size 3gal. Hopefully I can order it so that it'll come by the end of the week!

u/notjhh · 0 pointsr/videos

Yes, actually they do cost that much. Just because your petstore special freshwater tank didn't cost that much doesn't mean other tanks are priced the same.

Here's a $750 Nanocube. The Elos tanks cost even more than that. All of them are small and light enough to easily pick up and carry off.

u/cerealkilla316 · 4 pointsr/Aquariums

While I agree that this is a relatively small tank and far from an ideal setup, It really is not that bad compared to MANY betta setups I've seen. Work in a LFS for a year or two and you'll see what I mean. You have good intentions trying to get people to get a bigger tank for their betta, but I would try to concentrate on the truly horrific setups, like this or this. Compared to these, the cube tank is really not that bad.

u/ShrumpDank · 1 pointr/shrimptank

Turns out I do have more questions. What sort of filter are you using? I decided to go with this tank instead since I think the shape will make it easier to add rock to the bottom and it comes with a filter already

https://www.amazon.com/Tetra-29137-Wonder-Aquarium-Gallons/dp/B0018CFMYS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480983782&sr=8-1&keywords=1.5+gallon+aquarium

But I'm worried about the filter being too powerful or killing the shrimp. I watch a video by this youtuber called Christine Ha and she mentions some sort of sponge that can be used with the filter so nothing gets sucked in but I'm not sure how it works.

Did you let your tank cycle before adding the shrimp?

And when you said earlier that you turned your ecosphere upside down while you adjusted the salintiy, how do you mean? Where did the measuring cup come in?

thanks for the info again

u/GrumpyGander · 1 pointr/bettafish

What kind of tank is it? It looks kind of similar to something I have in a box, and I want to make sure it's not as I was thinking of putting a betta in there. I have something like, if not exactly, this: http://www.amazon.com/Hagen-Marina-360-Degree-Aquarium-Starter/dp/B00891I1Q2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420948922&sr=8-2&keywords=2.65+gallon+fish+tank

u/Ta-veren- · 1 pointr/Aquariums

For sure will be getting a betta! Trying out an aquarium for the first time!
This might be a dumb question but do you keep the fish in it when you're changing water?

This looks like what I have I think it is exactly-

https://www.amazon.ca/Aqueon-MiniBow-Aquarium-Starter-Lighting/dp/B0743K2RRQ/ref=sr_1_6?crid=G6C8HP0RCXRO&keywords=5+gallon+fish+tank&qid=1574101820&sprefix=5+gall%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-6

But I didn't get it from there! Always wanted to keep some fish but thought I'd start simple for now!
Can you keep anything with the Betta? I know they are aggressive but I wouldn't mind having something else in it. I was also thinking of a plant.

u/yoinkmasta107 · 1 pointr/minimalism

A few things.

  1. They are expensive. About $60 on Amazon. For that much you can get a traditional tank that is 10 gallons which will make your fish happier.

  2. They have a small footprint. Fish like swimming side to side rather than up and down.

  3. The design of the tank means that it evaporates much more quickly than a traditional tank.

  4. It's small size makes it unstable (as in the water parameters are more likely to change which isn't great for fish).

  5. It's small size also means that an inexperienced aquarist can easily overstock it leading to poor water quality and a poor quality of life for the fish.

While this tank is aesthetically pleasing, I wouldn't put any fish in it. However, I think it can be made into a beautiful shrimp tank. Now obviously there are some fish that can live fine in there, but I just prefer to keep them in larger tanks.
u/taruun · 1 pointr/Aquariums

I live in Sweden, and while really tiny tanks seem pretty rare in the pet shops here, I've actually seen this thing in a local shop. That is a bowl, if you ask me...

We do have fairly decent animal protection laws, but the big issue with fish is that there are so many different species with different requirements. Therefore, the laws are very general. The laws pretty much state that everything about an aquarium should meet the species' requirements when it comes to size, filtration, tank mates, food etcetera.

Here is a short version of the laws about keeping fish in Sweden. In Swedish unfortunately, and I can't get the Google Translate link to work for some reason.

It's 10L and fits nicely on my computer desk. I found it at a goodwill but it's for sale for around 50 USD. It came with a white filter/light combo; the filter was nice but the light was really wimpy so I made the call to swap it.

I believe it's this guy. Got it from my LFS for $75. Pretty good considering it's a 10 gallon with light, filter, dechlorinator, instant cycle, and thermometer. Got the gravel and heater separate for ~$30 each. Could probably have done it cheaper but I wanted him out of that bowl asap.

That being said, Petco is doing a $1 per gallon sale. So a 10 gallon would be ten bucks, but it doesn't come with the heater or filter or chemicals or anything, so it's a bit of a trade off.

Nerite snails are great little algae vacuums. Plus, I think their shells look cool. I've never had any escape, but the one in my Fluval Chi tank likes to somehow find his way onto the fountain/filter block. Repeatedly. Lazy ass.

Warning: It's acrylic plastic, so under little to no pressure, small almost scratch like lines form inside the plastic pane, which may ruin the experience for some people.
