🎓 Reddit experts on carafes & pitchers
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where carafes & pitchers are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
Step 1: Acquire an ibrik / cezve / džezva
If you can, I recommend going somewhere local. If you have a local international market, or market that sells Arabic or Turkish foods, that would be best. You'll get a decent price there. It really shouldn't cost more than $10 (and I think that's pushing it).
If you can't find a place to purchase it locally, buy online. You might be tempted to get a fancy one, but those are expensive and not easy to clean because of the shape. Something simple and cheap like this works just as well.
Step 2: Acquire coffee cups
If you already have espresso cups, you can use those. However Turkish coffee is traditionally drank out of special cups, about this size/style here. If you've found a local place to get the ibrik, you can likely find cups there too.
Step 3: Acquire Turkish coffee
There are two options here. #1 which I think is easier and better, is to buy ground Turkish coffee. Once again, if you're at a local store that sells it, buy it there. It will likely be freshest and cheapest. Sometimes they also sell small packages of it, which might be good if you're trying to see if you like it.
Your second option, is to go to a grocery store or market that sells ground coffee - pick the coffee you want, and when you use the grinder machine, select "Turkish". It is the most fine setting. The problem with this method, is that the machine will never grind it as well as "real Turkish coffee". If you're planning to host a dinner party to show off your new Turkish coffee skills, do NOT do it this way.
Technically there is a third option. You can buy a Turkish coffee grinder. This way you can choose the beans, and get the finely ground consistency of real Turkish coffee. But be warned, these make for better ornamental displays in your home rather than grinding coffee. Also, I've never figured out how to clean the inside...
Step 4: Cook the coffee!
Fill an empty cup (the Turkish or espresso style) with water, and dump it into your ibrik. Place it on the stovetop on high heat. Once the water has just begun to boil, take 1 teaspoon of coffee grounds and place it into the water and stir. Watch carefully, because within 10 seconds the coffee will begin to rise. Keep stirring to prevent the coffee from pouring over the edge. Once the coffee begins to rise, remove it from the heat and wait for it to drop, then return it to the stovetop and let it rise one more time. When it starts to rise again, turn off the heat and you're done! Pour the coffee into the cup. Wait for it to cool, and enjoy
If you like your coffee with sugar, you can add that while it's cooking or after you've poured it into the cup. Also, Turkish coffee is NOT typically drank with milk or cream.
Step 5: When you're done drinking, turn the cup upside down (optional)
I actually don't know how prevalent this is in Turkey, but in former Yugoslavia where people drink a lot of Turkish coffee, this is what they often do.
And sometimes for fun people will do fortune telling by looking at the grounds inside the upside down cup. I don't know much about it, but it's fun to watch people do it.
I usually use the french press as a pitcher, if it's something cold brewed or an herbal that can be left in. Otherwise, I use one of a few 30+ year old pitchers, but they're tall 56oz ones like this in dimension (just straight cylinders though). I wouldn't use that one, as it's acrylic, which is only good up to 80c.
I think a carafe would be great in your situation. They don't take up much space, they're easy to pour, and have no handles like most pitchers do, so that saves a lot of room.
Throat coat is a great licorice tea, but bagged and herbal. I'm not aware of any others, besides bagged "medicinal" teas like that one, like Yogi. You can drink it even when you don't have a sore throat, though. :P
I'm sorry your week has been bad. :( I hope the weekend makes it better! <3
Oh my gosh, I think you should buy this because it's awesome! Plus, how could baking a Doctor Who cake, decorating it, and then eating it not cheer you up?
If I win, a gift card would be really nice since I'm trying to save up for a new duvet cover. If not that, though, I'd love [this](http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GG158E/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl? _encoding=UTF8&colid=1S041OZOQDTEI&coliid=I3FFJTJYI73Q04)! :) Thanks for the contest!
Edited because I was on my phone and used some wrong words. :P

You look so good and more importantly you must be feeling so much more healthy too!
The guideline about "drinking 60 oz" of water a day, by the way? There is no basis in science or fact for that at all. The only reason you might want to do it is to keep fuller. But as far as being hydrated, that's what the thirst mechanism is for. You feel thirsty, you drink. Also you get hydration from every other liquid, including coffee, and fruits and crunchy vegetables. So you sound like you're getting plenty of liquid and hydration in your diet and maybe that's something you can just cross off your to-do list!
But if you really want to drink more water, a good tip is to buy one of those glass pitchers that have a tube in the middle, and you can put lemons or limes or oranges or raspberries in the little tube and it flavors the water, and keep it in the fridge (cold water with a splash of lime flavor is SUPER drinkable!). This type of thing (you can find them cheaper, too) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YU8U3FU/ref=psdc_3136595011_t3_B01LZ14Q1A
Or you can just get some lemons/limes and have slices in the fridge to add to a glass of ice water.
You're doing great!!
I need this for summer! I love making fresh drinks (I hate using powder mixes)...and this would save me so much time squeezing all those lemons myself!
And seriously, it's cute...for a pitcher lol
Have fun moving!! That is soooo exciting! The best part is stocking your new home with all the cool stuff you find!
STOCK MY HOUSE
Happy Birthday, /u/Sp3cia1K !!!
I will link This because it is pretty and everyone needs some juice when they have Sp3cia1k in the morning! (of course that is not an item to win....but it's the best on my list for relatable!)
Fun! Thanks for the contest!
I use this OXO tray (I have three, but I still have to do it in at least two batches when I make broth in my instant pot) and a 1/4 cup measuring cup and just measure out 1/4 cup per cavity. It fills the cavity about 2/3 of the way up, which I find gives plenty of room for the broth to freeze without overflowing the cavity. Then I store it in a ziploc.
If anyone has any better ideas about storing them I'm all ears. I have a tiny freezer. Hopefully I'll be able to just get a chest freezer soon and I can just use some larger tupperware.
Edit: I've also found that those plastic drink pitchers like this work great for storing my second batch while my first batch is freezing.
Edit 2: Oh, I just remembered I also use those molds to freeze buttermilk. I don't use that much buttermilk with just a two person family, but when I want to batter and fry something its exactly what I want and I don't want to have to buy a whole bottle for just the little bit I need.
Go to Target or similar store and buy a half gallon glass pitcher. They aren't that much, they're about $6. At whatever your local grocery is, pick up a box or two of Celestial Seasonings fruit tea. Any of the fruit Zinger teas are good. The blueberry or cherry ones are also tasty.
Technically, it's a tisane, but that's a gatekeeping distinction, because tea is a tisane, and differentiating based on what particular herbs are in your drink is boring.
Anyway. Drop two teabags into the pitcher, and fill with water. We used filtered, but that's up to you. Stick it in the fridge, and let steep at minimum overnight. Eighteen hours is better, but if you get it in by about eight o'clock, it should be ready mid morning.
Pour and enjoy. Water is boring after awhile. This is pretty much all I drink anymore. There's no sugar, no caffeine, nothing in it except herbal tea. And, a box will get you about five gallons. It's not quite as cheap as water, but it beats pretty much everything else.
Hope things get better for you, too.
I bought a new one (many years ago), looks like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Glass-Absinthe-Fountain-Two-Faucets/dp/B00PUN1CPY/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1549469133&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=absinthe+fountain&psc=1
The spigots are plastic, but it does the job. The nicer ones are all closer to $200.
Lots of good deals here:
https://www.absinthes.com/en/absinthe-fountains-s364
Good luck!
I own two of these: https://www.amazon.com/Komax-Tritan-Pitcher-Orange-BPA-Free/dp/B014RMENJU/
You'll need to use a separate infuser (or glue some fine mesh over the pour spout I guess), but after I lost a much nicer glass pitcher to temperature shock, I wanted something sturdy, and these fit in the fridge super well. Also, the infuser won't get in the way and they're easier to clean.
/u/GherkinJerkin & /u/Durithill, I summon you! (Mainly because you're the last two people I talked to.
I, incidentally, am also finding my way living by myself. I haven't accidentally killed myself or my pets, so I think I'm doing just fine. Here's my piece of advice: presentation is everything. For instance, this ceramic pitcher will make any drink you put in it look good. Just having your friends over for sandwiches? Make some plain iced tea, put it in the pitcher and BAM you have an attractive way to present a simple drink. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make your apartment loo good. Make friends with your local Goodwill/Salvation Army. I have a collection of houseplants, all of which are planted in unique coffee cups, tiny pitchers, or a coffee pot, that I got for dirt cheap at Goodwill. Adds intrigue without the expense!
Amazon entry says dishwasher safe. Using a strong detergent can be very helpful for oil I've found. My blender bottles end up cleaner when I wash them at work.
Also, I can sometimes get good results by stuffing a well soaped dishcloth inside things and shaking well.
[](/twiumm "That may have come out wrong.")
I've never used a knockbox, but I agree with the rest. Also:
A small, digital scale in grams. Besides the grind's coarseness, accuracy and consistency are key.
If you're making milk drinks, a pitcher. Milk poured to the crease in the middle is perfect for a (6 oz) capp.
A thermometer for steaming milk, if you don't yet trust your instincts (I don't).
A blind basket for back flushing and cleaning.
Caffiza for occasional deep cleaning.
Nice-to-have: A vacuum sealed coffee canister so that beans stay fresher a bit longer.
Our favorite cups: Cremaware
$7.60 apiece to anyone with Amazon prime...
I keep ordering them for friends, mostly because I want to have one to use when I'm at their houses... but it makes me look nice.
This $5 mini pitcher is also a great addition...
I based my electrolyte soup on the Snake Juice guy's recepie as posted on the front page of his website. Changed it to suit me better. the sodium coems from Chicken boullion
Added curry powder for taste
I also add some nutritional yeast, for no real reason other than giving me some low low calorie nutrition and a tiny amount of protein. Plus it's what that world record fasting guy was taking for a year of fasting.
Then also like to add cayan peper or hot sause. Then I add all the stuff in the reciepie like Lemon, lime juice, baking soda, apple cider vinager, potasium (no salt)
It ends up tasting like spicey soup. I heat it to 140 degrees in a water kettle before drinking.
Fuck it, here's my detailed instructions:
Start with 3qt of water
Add all this:
2 or 3 tbs Chicken/Tomato Boullion (start w 2 and add more if you want or don't get the shits, also consider the amount of water or diet drinks that you drink and make you piss out your salts)
1 tbs Baking soda
1 tbs No salt/Potasium
2 TBSP Nutritional Yeast
4 TBSP Lime Juice
4 TBSP Lemon Juice
6 TBSP Apple cider vinager
1 TBSP Curry powder
Spicy shit to taste.
heat it to 140 degrees. Drink slowly and as much as you feel like. I end up drinking all of it like every 2 days and a half. It does seem to cause me to retain water weight, but who cares. Remeber if the scale stops moving it's probably water and it will catch up, just go by how your body feels and how your clothes fit. The scale is not a good short term measure of success.
I did a quick search and it appears that a reverse osmosis or ion exchange filter is required to completely scrub Cr(VI) from water. Carbon filters probably do help at least a little bit though.
This pitcher-type filter is recommended by the EWG to remove Cr(VI): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CUMLOK. Looks like it has a more elaborate filter system than traditional Brita pitchers that includes an ion exchange stage.
One of the best coffee related purchases I've made
Keurig and Keurig-like brewers are not what I'd consider fast for serving 30. And the cost of those cups add up quick. For what you'd spend on a Keurig you could get an 8-cup french press and a thermal carafe and probably a pound or two of coffee.
If you're dead-set on a Keurig brewer, I'd say craigslist is a good place to start. I've found a few on there for around $60 - 80.
