It's really a matter of personal taste. I prefer Pfeil tools which can be bought online. i've always found their steel to be far superior, especially when it comes to retaining an edge. A bit more money, but for me......I only wanted to buy once.

That being said, FlexCut makes some nice tools as well

https://www.flexcut.com/home/category/wood-carving-tools and there used to be a guy that did some really nice videos using their tools.

I think I may have carved a pumpkin once when I was a kid but I don't remember it. My wife is really big into the holidays so I surprised her with a pumpkin carving kit and two pumpkins for us each to carve. I chose to make mine Flyers!

Edit: I had a blast and we're thinking about getting two more. I want to try a Gritty Pumpkin!

here's the kit I bought!

Most likely it came out of a massive, old school garde manger kit. My culinary school teacher had one and that kit was the size of a briefcase. The amount of weird, small tools was staggering. Kind of looked like this but slightly bigger : http://www.amazon.com/International-Culinary-Carving-Piece-Wood/dp/B00032S1KG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1375836283&sr=8-3&keywords=garde+manger+kit

There are pumpkin kits for “shaving” pumpkins rather than carving them.

Like this one

Then for the finer details like the rounded edges and possibly fixing unwanted parts of the pumpkin flesh, I used a dremel with carving bits.

Messermeister Avanta would be my bargin choice for a twice-a-year kind of deal if you want a matching fork. Probably run it on a steel before every bird or roast.

this Dalstrong set looks ridiculous but might be fun to mess with.

Otherwise a Fujiwara FKM Sujihiki might be a good choice (FKH for carbon)

I got this set. It was really nice and useful. I did Thanos but sort of messed up by thinning the wall too much.
