Top Reddit comments about Cat Food:

u/NotMara · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

1.) Something that is blue.
This Neblua Funko Pop is not only cute, but also BLUE.
Because Mother's Day is around the corner, how about this gorgeous necklace?
Not only that, but are you a fidget kinda preson? Then this is the perfect thing for you!

2.) Something that says summer (literally or figuratively).
Gotta love summer! You know what comes with summer? Sunflowers!
For some reason, pineapples really remind me of summer. I can't really say why. They just, like, SCREAM "summer" to me.
Summer, to me, also means relaxing with a good book. And what better book than the next one in the Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin?

3.) Something food related that is unusual.
Not sure if this counts as unusual, but I thought it was quite abnormal...
Also, I can't say I've ever seen a water melon cake-topper, though I'm no expert on cake toppers.
Also, if horror movies and the undead are your kinda thing, how about a side-dish of zombie?

4.) Something you want to gift to someone else, and tell me why.
I really want to gift this beautiful Pop moment to my brother, because he's amazing and deserves all the things.
I also want to gift this soundtrack to my sister because she's always singing, and I know it'd makes her happy.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it!
Oh my gosh, you are totally asking the right person. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one of the best books that has ever existed. Not only that, but it's a series! Also, my username is taken from the first page of the book, so that must mean that it's good. It's got suspense, kids with powers, and some horror themes. It's just overall a great book. PLEASE check it out!
Another good book series is the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. The final book is coming out this year, so I'm excited!
Why stop there? Another great book is All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. It will break your heart, but in a good way. It's a beautifully written book. I'm not sure what genre you like, but it reminded me of the genre of books like The Fault in Our Stars and Everything, Everything.
Another great series is The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken. Not only is a great series, but there's also a movie coming out in August that's based off the books! Better get reading. ;)

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related!
These are totally adorable AND affordable! Talk about a deal.
Like writing? This notebook would be the excellent choice for the writer within! Or just someone who likes taking notes.
Have a cat? How 'bout some good ol' catfood?

7.) Something related to dogs. (Bonus point if it works for my GSD)
I don't know what GSD means I'M SORRY! But here is the cutest alligator plushie. Like if I was a dog I would legit want it for myself.
I stumbled across this adorable squirrel set thing and I am internally squeeing at the cuteness.
Okay by now I really want a dog. Somebody send me one pronto. Here's an adorable taco plush, because heck it's cute and funny and I really want a puppy.

8.) Something that is not useful, but so awesome you must have it.
Oh boy, you shouldn't have asked. It's the most expensive thing on my wishlist, and it's beautiful. I know, I know, it's a book, but it's more than that! It's a HUGE book with photographs from my favorite, most-loved movie series! Seriously. Words cannot describe how cool of a book it is. And there's a limited number of them made, and there's only 3 left in stock. But I digress. It's not what one would consider useful, but it sure is awesome.
Wait, what's that? I haven't mentioned Kylo Ren in 2 minutes? Oh boy, better change that. Yes, I love Kylo Ren. I'm aware that is a touchy subject with people. I don't care. I have a shrine in my room for Kylo Ren. This pillow is not what most people would call necessary, though honestly I would probably beg to differ.
Pretty much everyone can agree that Funko Pops aren't necessary, but they are so much fun oh my gosh. Like, for instance, this somewhat expensive yet cool Darth Vader Pop.

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why?
I love movies. With a passion. But my favorite movies of all time, are The Hunger Games movies. If that wasn't evident by the massive expensive book above, then I don't know what is. But honestly, they're great movies. I know they're not for everyone, but they hold a special place in my heart.
Someone recently gifted me Moulin Rouge, and honestly it is so good. So, I also, of course, recommend that. It has singing, great vocalists, great songs, and a great plot. It also has Ewan McGregor, so what's not to like?
I saw Logan (the final Wolverine movie in theaters, and it is such a beautiful movie. Very sad, but very beautiful. The best Wolverine movie in my opinion. 10/10 would watch/cry again.
Another great futuristic movie is V for Vendetta. It's a well-known movie, and it's very good.
If you're into horror, I love the most recent Carrie movie. I know it's not for everyone, but I really liked it.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.
I mean, I think it's pretty self-explanatory, but this bat would make a great weapon in the apocalypse. Also, if you're into leading an army and "saving" people, this bat will probably get you there. (Ahem I totally didn't just buy this bat for myself cough.)
Not sure if bright green is the way to go in the apocalypse, but I'm sure a bow and arrow set would keep you alive for a little bit. Especially if you happen to be Daryl Dixon (though I guess he technically has a crossbow... I digress).
Don't try and tell me that in the apocalypse you won't get peckish. Everyone knows that snacks will be the first to go. Better stock up on those sweet, sweet snacks.

I just buy stuff at the pet store, but I can try and find a few recommendations. You'll want to avoid things with bells or small parts, at least while she's tiny. PetSmart usually has some pretty good stuff, or you can even find a good selection on Amazon. If you're gone a lot, it also might be a good idea to invest in something you can turn on and leave running while you're gone, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WP7F8YC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2GCMBb2JZP9JV.

Ironically, my cat's favorite toy is a piece of cut up fleece on a stick that I got from the pet store.

Here are a few homemade things that look fun:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/496293492/cat-toy-kitten-toy-kitten-puzzle-cat

https://www.etsy.com/listing/573944129/catnip-toy-medium-kicker-cat-toy-cat

And here are some more things from Amazon that I would recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DT2WL26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bLCMBbEDZ585B

And
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QPLUQXY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dOCMBbRA7B6MM

Just make sure she's careful with the string on this one. As long as she doesn't break it off and swallow it, it should be fine.

Some sort of a laser pointer is always a great toy for kitties, just make sure not to shine it in her eyes.

Finally, make sure to get her a cat tree if you have room for one. Cats like to climb. Something like this would be great:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0794T79KM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ERCMBbM18RTGA

Scratching posts are also important, so here's what I would recommend for a scratching post, if you don't want to get the cat tree:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BY385RX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fTCMBbKA5B15Q

Once you spay her, if she isn't already, feed her adult food so she doesn't gain too much weight. A good kitten food to start her on before the spay is Good Natured, at PetSmart. If she's spayed and you want to start her on adult food, I use this, and my cat loves it, and she's super healthy:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XDQCL13/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0VCMBbHDBF7XG

If you have any other questions, please feel free to message me. I have had my cat for two years, and raised her since she was three months old, so I can answer a lot of kitten questions.

One more thing, get her a bed. She may not always use it, but she will appreciate it.

u/Meeowkitty · 3 pointsr/MaineCoon

Congrats on the MC!

I have two MCs....

  1. Invest in a water fountain! Cats naturally don't drink enough water (which is why they tell u wet food is better to feed ur cat than dry food)

    https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Drinkwell-Platinum-Fountain-Drinking/dp/B000L3XYZ4/ref=sr_1_5?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1542680300&sr=1-5&keywords=platinum+water+fountain

Also, cats don't like their food and water in the same spot . I found my cats tend to drink way more water and it stays cleaner when they are in different areas. Previously i was cleaning their water daily because my silly cats were dropping their kibbles into the water, or their food was getting sugar ants.

  2. Your new baby will need a scratching post he/she can grow into. My boys use this one religiously (we have 3 posts scattered around the house) but this is their favorite because they can stretch all the way to the top. WARNING: its massive. its very sturdy and pretty wide so if u have a smaller place this may NOT be the post for you.

    https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Homes-Pets-Scratching-Extra-Durable/dp/B00JEADDCO/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1542679782&sr=8-9&keywords=cat+scratching+post+for+large+cats

  3. Food: my kitties were fed taste of the wild at the breeders, but I transitioned them to Orijen cat and Kitten Food. Extremely pricy but as far as dry food goes some of the best.

    https://www.amazon.com/Orijen-Dry-Cat-Kitten-Food/dp/B01I3IBQG2/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1542680125&sr=1-4&keywords=orijen+cat+and+kitten+12

  4. Cat litter: My previous cats developed issues from the dust from clay based litters. We switched over to something more natural when i got these MCs...like walnut shells!

    https://www.amazon.com/Naturally-Fresh-Multi-Cat-Quick-Clumping-Litter/dp/B00BPA12MO/ref=sr_1_7?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1542680260&sr=1-7&keywords=blue+litter

  5. Cat Shelves - If you have a blank wall i definitely recommend this! We had to tweak ours a little because the shelves we purchased were entirely too small for Maine Coons. And also had to add supporting brackets. Everyday its a fight on who gets the cat shelves! and if its in a common area, its definitely a way for them to be present and still in their own space up high.

  6. Pet insurance. If you can afford to get ur kitten Pet insurance I recommend this. Maine coons since they are a larger breed are prone to things like hip displaysia, HCM, and other genetic diseases. It makes caring for them a little easier as they get older. We use Healthy Paws Pet insurance for our two Maine Coons and i highly recommend them! I want to say as a kitten they started out between 10 and 20 dollars a month?

Everyone has given u a lot of wonderful advice here! Some of which i actually wish I knew when i was getting my babies! Good luck and enjoy your new kitten :)

Declawing is the same as surgically removing the last bone from each of your fingertips. Learn to keep the cat's nails trimmed correctly. Too short and if a cat's not used to it, they can't walk, run, or jump without wobbling until they grow back.

Not all cats like scratching posts -- mine prefers cardboard, but not the 'on-edge' cardboard cat scratchers, so my dad helped me add a wooden 'tray' to the top of the post in which I place flat squares of cardboard cut from boxes. She scratches and sleeps there, and sometimes just perches there to watch out the window. Don't get a carpet-covered scratching post or pad unless you want to teach your cat that scratching carpet is a good idea. =P

I have a Booda Dome for a litter box -- she still tracks some litter. I don't think there's a system out there that will keep cats from tracking any. Some litters are better than others. Covered litter boxes are nice for the humans, but not all cats will adapt to the flaps. Some litters are lower 'dust' than others, and this is better for cats' lungs and humans' alike. =)

Not all cats will respond to catnip or all types of toys. My cat is indifferent to laser pointers, and only likes the actual fur-covered realistic mice. She doesn't care for bell toys, but those little plastic springs drive her nuts (when she's in the mood). Her favorite toy is a wooden wobble 'bead' in which you can place catnip. Also a Da Bird Feather Cat Toy which you can make flutter to sound like a real bird. I'd suggest the non-collapsible one, as I'd suspect my cat would pull that apart. =P

Talk to your vet about what food(s) are actually good for your cat. From my research, you want to avoid bone meal products or and 'meal' products as they include ground bone which is hard on your cat's kidneys. Also avoid grains. Turkey is better than chicken; not all fish are terrible, but you have to consider mercury levels. You should consider only feeding your cat wet food, but this is more expensive, and difficult to manage with hurried schedules. Mine loves kibble and hates having to give that up, so I leave that out all the time and supplement with a big scoop of wet food at night. (These are the best quality, least expensive per-serving foods I've found.) A 6-lb. bag of kibble seems to last my cat ~3 months. At four days (servings) per can, the 12-pack of 12.5 oz. cans last about 1.5 months. You'll need two snap-on plastic can lids. My cat adores salmon as you may see. =P

Not all cats will like all types of cat beds.

Mine LOVES water (she literally demands 'cat showers') and she likes to play with the dripping tub faucet, so next I'm going to get a cat drinking fountain. Cats in general prefer 'fresh' or moving water, so mine always wants clean water in her bowl every time.

Because no one cat will like every toy or bed or litter box, you may have to buy more than one. Talk to your vet about what types to try and how to encourage a cat to like what you buy. I put catnip on my cat's things -- that seems to have worked, but not all cats respond to catnip.

Breed: domestic short-hair, a.k.a. moggy.

She looks to be older the 6 weeks as her default blue eyes (almost all kittens, including those of the "big" cats are born with blue eyes) have already turned to green.

Looks like you are giving her Temptations treats; those are good for an occasional treat, but not for feeding real meals. Cats are obligate carnivores; they need meat--check labels on cat food and avoid anything that has fillers like corn.

Good wet food (esp for the price!): https://www.amazon.com/Purina-Fancy-Feast-Flaked-Shrimp/dp/B0012KB466/ref=pd_sim_199_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0012KB466&pd_rd_r=B8MQ2M7BCPCJGWPBQD1N&pd_rd_w=SpSRe&pd_rd_wg=Cwzvx&psc=1&refRID=B8MQ2M7BCPCJGWPBQD1N

Set up a feeding station somewhere quiet, where you have little foot traffic and no noise (like washing machine etc).

Make sure she drinks enough water. The watering station needs to be away from the food station (cats do not like to drink next to food; it's an evolutionary left-over -- in nature water next to killed prey might be contaminated).

Cats like running water (signals "fresh" to them); try leaving a faucet on a slow drip or get a water fountain.

Be sure to get her a break-away collar with contact info in case she gets out. Microchip her as well.

Take her to a vet soonish to check her over and get her spayed (no more kittens!). Do NOT get talked into declawing her.

Get a couple of GOOD scratching posts, one where she can do a full body stretch vertically without tipping over the thing (this one is good: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000634MH8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Try cardboard scratchers, too. Cats love those!

Most cats love "da bird" to play with (https://www.amazon.com/GoCat-Cat-Feather-Assorted-Colors/dp/B000F9JJJE/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1504644018&sr=1-4&keywords=da+bird)

Here's a great resource for any cat appreciator: http://www.wayofcats.com/blog/

That's all I can think of right now ... except this: have fun with her. Cats can enrich your life in immeasurable ways!

Thats good to hear :)

So to be specific, you're looking for:

Macros

  • Protein: 28-35% (always below 40%)
  • Fat: 10-15%
  • Fiber: as high as possible

This is what most adult/juvenile hedgehogs need, but if you weigh him and he's under 250g then consider adding +5% fat intake to his diet.

    Safe ingredients

  • Meats: chicken, beef, turkey
  • Meat Meals: chicken meal, duck meal
  • Fats: chicken fat, turkey fat

These are healthy ingredients for almost any hedgehog. You can also choose to add fish to the list of ingredients, although some people say it makes their poop smell worse.

    Unsafe ingredients

  • corn, wheat, brewer's rice*
  • cellulose
  • unnamed meats, meat meals, and unnamed fats*
  • by-products
  • meat by-products*
  • BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin
  • food dyes
  • menadione sodium bisulfate

Avoid these, but you'll find some of the * products in healthy foods listed beyond the first 10 ingredients.

    Good Choices

Blue Buffalo Healthy Living Natural Adult Dry Cat Food

Purina Beyond Simply Natural, Adult Dry Cat Food

Iams Proactive Health Original Adult Dry Cat Food

I've used the Blue Buffalo for juvenile hedgehogs before and its worked well for them, however I stumbled upon the Purina a year ago and that stuff is pretty great for the price. Both have 4% fiber while the Iams only has 3%, but aside from that the Iams is a good food too. I'd just do a search for your local retailers online and see who has the best deal on each product and go from there.

    I hope this helps
u/pruney-candy · 4 pointsr/Pets

This is my opinion, and it might be controversial.

The other day I went on Amazon, and decided to check out best seller wet food products for cats. I compared what I'm feeding right now, to some of the fancier brands, and some that idk could be independent producers. I found no difference between the cheap, super market products, and the fancier stuff. They all had the same non-food additives, ie minerals, guar gum etc. The ones labelled grain free still had some sort of non-meat product in it, like blueberries, for antioxidants. How many cats do you see eating blueberries as it is. And you know what, meat by-products aren't evil. That just means stuff that isn't chicken breast. It includes organ meat, and bones, and it's not rendered meaning it's as it is, not cooked. And in wild, non-domesticated cat does eat all of it's prey, skin bones and all. And that's healthy. It just makes us queasy to think an animal is eating organ meat, but it's ok for the animal, even good. The supermarket stuff can't be sold until it's AAFCO approved anyways. So just read up the ingredients, and find out what you're ok with and most importantly, what your cat thinks is good enough for it :D

However, I did find this product https://www.amazon.com/NUTRO-Soft-Loaf-Kitten-Chicken/dp/B00TZMCE3U which I liked because it wasn't just meat. It had other stuff, and the ingredient list looked short. And the price point looked good too.

You could also try raw food, home made recipes. The internet is full of those recipes, and I can see why that might be attractive in terms of price because it does turn out to be cheaper to buy raw meat and grind it up. Of course get supplements which you will add to the meat and those are easily available online as well.

Not sure what your budget is, but there are a few suggestions I can make.

2. Make grooming easy with bribes! Healthy treats like Catty Shack or Greenies make Brush Time easier for both parties.

3. A lot of professional groomers charge an arm and a leg for cats (because of their arms and legs), so do the grooming yourself! You will need a Furminator, nail clippers, and cleansing wipes. Groom often, and invest in a scratching post.

4. As long as you are using a tool for grooming cats (i.e.: Furminator) you don't have to worry about overdoing it. Brush as thoroughly as you can, and stop when your brush starts coming out clean (or nearly free of loose hairs).

5. General tips: Buy the best food your budget allows. Preferably wet food, or a diet half wet food and half dry food. Go grain free, like Merrick and/or Soulistic. For a healthy, shiny coat I would recommend Pet Naturals' Daily Best; And to reduce hairballs, Hairball. Don't use hairball remedies that contain petroleum jelly, it will give your baby the runs :(

EDIT: Formatting

I really appreciate all of your advice and suggestions! Our vet was wanting an ultra sound to take a better look at what is exactly going on in her liver, that way we can treat it better. However ultra sounds are so expensive and we've exhausted quite a bit of money just to get this far with this diagnosis. I will definitely call my vet and ask her about the Denamarin. I'm looking at reviews and this looks like it could be amazing for Freya!

We've also been having to get her a diuretic pill or drain her of fluid about once a month since this has started. There's been some suggestiosn that ultimately it will come to putting her down, but I cannot bring her to do it when she doesn't seem like her... quality of life is going down. She still likes to eat, play, and purrs like crazy when cuddle time comes around. The biggest issue we've noticed is ocassional episodes that last for around 24 hours, where she starts drooling, gets extremely disoriented, needs to be reminded where her box is, and refuses to eat. The vet says this is part of her liver functioning issues.

Honestly, I'd likely have to switch her over to the wet form of the food. She's reached a point where she flat out refuses dry food and even has issues eating it. It seems like it's too much effort for her. She's much happier and eats much more if I give her wet food. Her favorite food is the wet Meow Mix cups that have a higher protein.

The vet tried to put her on the Hill's Prescription Hepatic Care wet diet but she upright refused it, even if it was a tiny spoonful mixed in with her normal food, and wouldn't eat for two days until I gave her back her Meow Mix. Considering how much weight she's lost (she's about 5 pounds) I didn't want to risk her not eating. They're now having us try Hill's Prescription Critical Care.

I mixed in a good table spoon with her Meow Mix today and she chowed it down like an absolute champ.

All meat based pet foods contain synthetic taurine as well. The more you know!

Taurine is naturally found in meat. It and a few other meat-specific nutrients are required for cats to be healthy. However, these nutrients are heat-sensitive and are destroyed when meat is processed into kibble. I suppose I haven't surveyed every single meat-based kibble on the market, but all of the following use synthetic Taurine.

Here is my cat Fluffy. Some people say he looks "mean" but he is the sweetest ball of floof. I call him The Gentle Giant :)

[Cat food] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005OB3E30/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_r6y.wb2TQN6GQ) is always great! (On my fur babies list)

Thanks for the contest. Any pictures of your fur babies?

This is so kind of you! I would get this for my kitties :) I have been dealing with some financial difficulties for a while, otherwise I wouldn't post. No worries though! I truly appreciate the kindness behind the gesture.

I am grateful for 60 mph winds, 20 mile wide dust storms, and a sky that rips open and pours down buckets of rain in a matter of minutes. Why? Because I live in the desert and it's monsoon season, and that means slightly cooler temperatures. I'll take 100º vs 119º, even if that means my neighbors car port ends up in my yard and my car gets sandblasted (I need a new paint job anyway). :)

This is the one I switched to: Purina ONE Hairball, Weight Control, Indoor, Natural Dry Cat Food, Indoor Advantage https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000WFKTWM

Searching Amazon and Chewy for "indoor" yields at least several options.

Dude, where are you getting your wet cat food? I can get some nearby at 2 cans for $1. You can get 24 cans online for under $10. I also have these lids that snap onto them (like a tupperware lid) to preserve the food better so I can make a can last 2-3 days (we give our cat both wet and dry food). If you compare it to some dry food like Purina ONE, and do a bit of math, it comes out to 14.01 oz per dollar for the dry food compared to 13.92 oz per dollar for the wet food. In this case, the wet food is actually cheaper. It's not an exact comparison, since Purina ONE costs more than the bottom-of-the-barrel pet food, but my point is that wet food isn't too much more expensive than dry food in most cases.

Okay, here we go:

Howard has said numerous times that he is about 180lbs. According to Men's Health a 180lb man has about 21lb of bone so that puts Howard at about 160lb of non-bone, take away another 20lbs for non edible nails, hair, teeth, tendons, feces, etc. and we are looking at 140lb of cat food, or 2240 ounces

According to vet sources you should feed a cat at least once a day and maybe twice a day. Lets assume a low range of once and a high of three times for a fat cat. A fancy feast serving clocks in at 3 ounces.

I have previously expressed amazement when Howard said on the air that they had 23 cats in the house based on that metric, 23 cats would eat 69 ounces minimum and 207 ounces max a day.

Therefore in conclusion it would take 32 days maximum and 10.8 days minimum for Howard's dead body to be consumed by his cats.
