Ok, I love Crass, but it's also very obvious that they're pretty inaccessible to anyone not used to screeching feedback and shittily-recorded, sometimes completely-incomprehensible british accents. But goddamn, their lyrics are so damn amazing. It is the most impassioned, inflammatory, insightful and relevant poetry I'm familiar with. So to everyone who loves awesome atheistic, anti-opression lyrics but isn't attracted to caustic, abrasive punk noise I'm recommending picking up this. This guy restructured Crass songs into floaty, easily-understandable folk-ish songs. It's pretty awesome, and I'm already recommending it to people who I suspect wouldn't like Crass, but can damn well appreciate the brilliance of their lyrics.

|name|Great Big Sea|
|about artist|Great Big Sea (often shortened to GBS) is a Canadian folk-rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, best known for performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs. The band also performs original material. On March 11, 2010, Great Big Sea celebrated their seventeenth birthday as a band. And like almost every one of their many anniversaries spent together, they celebrated it by playing a concert, this one in Omaha, Nebraska. Welcome to the subreddit by the way! I’m always excited when there is a new post here.

I personally think that Ochs is super unique in his style of doing topical style folk songs while also experimenting and changing his musical style. Other than the obligatory Bob Dylan, I would suggest you check out Eric Anderson, Nick Drake, John Prine, Hoyt Axton, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, maybe some Simon and Garfunkel? I feel like no artist can truly compare to Phil as a character, but these are some musicians who do similar types of music that I also enjoy.

I also agree with you on the cd front, I have a cd player at home, and listen to exclusively cd’s in my car. I personally have “all the news”, and “i aint marchin’ anymore” on cd. The A&M stuff just never seemed to get any releases. I do have this compilation cd with several of the songs though, here is the link to that:
Ochs compilation

I also have several of his live album cd’s, they are surprisingly good quality and have several songs from that era. These are the two I would personally recommend:

Vancouver live 1966

Live again 1973

Yes they are. If you like them you'd also like The Men They Couldn't Hang, particularly their song The Colours (but most of their stuff is good).

And if you're into that whole Celtic Rock/Celtic Punk thing I have to recommend the Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, and my favorite Flogging Molly (I saw them perform Drunken Lullabies on the Tonight Show shortly after the album's release and immediately the next morning went and picked it up and Swagger. I stopped lending the albums out because I never got them back from people--I think I've purchased each of those two at least three times.

Flogging Molly was one of the best concerts I ever attended. I think it was back in 2003 when I saw them perform at a smallish club which maybe had 750 people in it. I went with myself and two friends, one of whom was a giant of a man (6'4, probably 300+lbs). It was rather amusing being down in the pit (always wear steel toed boots if you're going to be upfront at a concert), and the rest of us bouncing around like mad in the mosh pit, while he had a space around him of a foot on either side.

It was funny, because we were standing there in the pit and nobody was showing any excitement. I remember turning to my one friend (not the 6'4" monster) and saying "this crowd looks dead" and him agreeing. Then Flogging Molly came out, hit the opening note and the club practically exploded.

Summer in the Southeast is a great live album, it has what I believe is some of his best work. His songs sort of evolve over the years and gain a life of their own so it's good to hear him perform songs from various parts of his career. The live CD, I See a Darkness, Wolfroy Goes to Town, and The Letting Go are probably my favorite albums of his, but he has many great ones.

This is a great live track which isn't available on an album:

It reminded me a lot of 'ghosts I'(I never got to hear the other 'ghosts'). Maybe a bastard child of 'Ghosts I' and 'Broken'? Personally; I could have sworn there's a touch of 0304 in there somewhere, but I could be mistaken there, and I'll need more listens to be sure.

I can tell that even these speakers, which are the best I have access to, don't do it justice, though. Mind you, while there's some interesting soundscaping going on, it's nothing earth-shattering. It's fast, cheap, and it's there when you need it. It would probably fit right in my playlist, and more importantly, would serve as great material to put with your existing NIN collection, to keep you from getting stuck in a rut listening to 'The Fragile' on loop for the rest of your life if trent were to suddenly get hit by a CIA-hijacked airplane or something.

"Letting you"; I mean, I can stand listening to it, but it's just not up to normal NIN standards. ymmv.

"Lights in the sky" is very quiet on my setup, I know large dynamic range blah blah, still, I could have inserted silence in it's place and wouldn't have changed much.

Corona Radiata - The Four of Us are Dying
work together in a similar way to the last two or three tracks on 'With Teeth', in the 'Let's screw with our headspace a little, and then bring things up to a nice, tight, close' -- although they aren't as powerful/together, at least on this setup. Maybe, however they just aren't obviously as good, and there's something else at play that I haven't heard in my 3 or so listens so far.

It's hard to pin down these sorts of things, so apologies for almost intentional vagueness.

If you were bored with Ghosts, you may, or may not want to avoid this one. I'm not sure. But definitely go see the tour if it comes near you, since the stuff in 'The Slip' will probably add to that

edit I should note, that I don't actually 'get' lyrics, so if you normally listen to lyrics when you listen to NIN without straining yourself in order to do so, your experience will differ from mine.

Here is one of my favourite songs from the band

Xosha Hawraman means "Hawraman is Beautiful", Hawraman is a city in Iraqi Kurdistan that is famed for its natural majestic beauty. In the song they talk about the gardens and the mountains of Hawraman and their beauty.

Their most famous concert is called "The Living Fire" which was done in Paris

If you are really interested, I would definitely recommend buying it, I have many Non-Kurdish friends who have this in their CD collection. It really takes your breath away at times.
