🎓 Reddit experts on jazz music
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where jazz music are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
A true original mono pressing of Kind of Blue will have this label. This is one of mine (I prefer the mono). Note that side 2 has the tracks listed in incorrect order ("All Blues" is the real first track on side 2, "Flamenco Sketches" second). It's estimated that the first 50,000 or so pressed were like this, but no one knows the actual number. A stereo original will look like this. They realized the label error and eventually corrected it, so however technical you want to get about what is "original" and what isn't is up to you. If it's a 6-eye label, it's usually considered an original pressing. However, in 1961 just before switching to the 2-eye label, Columbia started printing "CBS" at the top of their 6-eye labels, like example 3C, Bob Dylan, on this page from VinylBeat.com. A version like this would technically be a second pressing, though all but the most discerning collector would still accept this as an original, as it would have been pressed in a subsequent run. Kind of Blue, after all was/is the best-selling jazz album of all-time.
You can get an original pressing, but one in really awesome shape is going to cost you a premium. As common as this record is, condition drives the price of Kind of Blue as much as any other record you can think of, and even then, because of the wow factor of the original pressing, you will likely pay more than you probably should.
I own 4 copies of Kind of Blue. 2 original US pressing, the original Japanese pressing, and the Music on Vinyl limited edition on deep blue vinyl. If you are not interested in shelling out for a super clean original, I would suggest buying a repress. There are a couple that I would recommend.
The Music of Vinyl version includes a second LP of bonus tracks, and this pressing sounds really great. I think this is worth the price for sure. Not sure which version you'll get with this Amazon order, but if you're into the blue vinyl (it's very dark, almost looks purple), you could probably find one. Those are a limited, numbered edition of 3000.
The Classic Records 200g pressing is sure to be very nice, as well, but I don't own one. I have a few of their 200g jazz pressings, and they are always super – as close to the original as you'll get, down to the exactness of the original label. This would not come with any bonus material.
Both of these would be the new master of the recordings, taken from the back-up reels, and they would not be a quarter tone off. Actually, only the first side of the original pressing were recorded at this slower speed, as they were recorded in the first day, when the tape machine was recording slower, the second side, the 2nd after the machines had been serviced.
Here’s the Grammy Edition (Vol. 3) of a 10 part video series titled “It’s no Ryo Fukui...” The purpose of this series is to share piano trios that I feel are underrated, overlooked, and affordable to buy on vinyl. Whether you’ve been listening to jazz for decades, or are just getting into it by way of a YouTube
marketing schemealgorithm, I hope this series will help you continue the journey. I will be sure to only include records that are easy to find and affordable (<$20 USD), tips on how to find them, and a one minute teaser video. Many here already know my feelings about jazz, and how it pertains to my
dislike...uh...misunderstanding of the Scenery phenomenon. If not, here are some past discussions which I’m sharing to helpusme move on:Ryo 1
Ryo 2
Ryo 3
Anyway, here we go:
It’s no Ryo Fukui, it’s the 2019 Grammy nominated Brad Mehldau Trio, Seymour Reads the Constitution:
I had already recorded another teaser for this week’s post, but then saw that one of my longtime favorite living jazz musicians was among the nominees for this Sunday’s ceremony- and in two categories: Best Improvised Jazz Solo and Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
Okay, so depending on who you ask, Brad Mehldau may or may not be considered “underrated”, but for the purpose of r/vinyl and the topic of piano trios, he most definitely is. I mean, have you ever seen this album posted here before? Exactly. And admittedly, this week’s post has an agenda: When Mehldau loses Best Solo to Fred Hersch and loses Best Album to Wayne Shorter, I want you to be just as upset as me.
Sidenote: That Shorter album is great, no doubt, but it’s a cheap shot from fucknut Don Was and his Blue Note bankroll. The production and packaging on Emanon is over-the-top extravagance and ridiculousness. It’s like if Marvel or Disney was entered in the Sundance Film Festival.
Moving on...
I would be remiss not to mention that I’ve been listening to Mehldau since 1999, and have seen him live several times. However, there was one singular event that took my love and understanding of his music to another level: Mushrooms. Sometime in my junior year of college I took a low-dose solo trip, and in that listening session, his very complex harmonies and melodies were instantly unlocked. All of a sudden I could hear his lines- like really hear his lines. Every turn, every interval, and every phrase made perfect sense. And while I was now able to analyze his music more readily in the moment, my brain seemed to cease computation and analysis, and the true beauty, color and emotion of his playing was revealed. Furthermore, that experience did not wane with time. It absolutely stuck with me, and I’m still able to hear his lines with greater clarity than other musicians (Coltrane, Rollins, Monk, etc.) that I’ve at this point listened to more.
Recorded at [Avatar Studios] in Manhattan and put out by Nonesuch Records, you know right away that the production of Seymour Reads the Constitution is going to be of the highest caliber. And while we’re breaking my <$20 rule, we’re going to make an exception because $22.99 for a well-mastered DOUBLE LP is entirely reasonable.
The teaser in the video is an excerpt of Mehldau’s Grammy nominated solo, De-Dah. (bonus points if you can name the classic jazz standard he quotes in his solo)
Now if you aren’t in a place in life (or at the moment) to take
mushrooms and have Brad’s melodies instantly click, don’t worry, ‘shrooms aren’t the only gateway. Mehldau is a fully formed and diverse musician who’s body of work is nothing short of true genius, and I believe there is something for everyone:
Check out his interpretation of Radiohead’s Exit Music, and how he totally captures the spirit of the piece through his solo.
Beatles more your bag? Check out Dear Prudence.
Okay, more into 70’s fusion or electronic music? I got you, fam.
Sorry, was that too intense? Let’s cool out with some reinterpretations of J.S. Bach
And finally, one for you introspective bluegrass folk.
Enjoy!

There are two (or maybe three?) rather obscure ones he's on, but I'll have to dig around through some on-line discographies to find them (and I've never heard any of them, but have always been curious to). Here's the first one (and keep checking back, I'll update this post with the others as I can find them)...
OK, I think(?) this is the 2nd one - but this isn't the album cover I've seen before. OK, I got this figured out. The first link below is the original LP. The second link is a compilation that includes that same album, but one other album (without Joe), both on the same CD. 95% sure this is the same material on both. I've thought about getting this for years and years (maybe one of these days).
NO IDEA what the 3rd one might be that I was maybe thinking of, or if I was just imagining there was a 3rd one. I'll have to really carefully look thought a couple very detailed Joe Henderson on-line discographies that are out there.
I've never heard the Gruntz or Leary dates, so I don't know exactly how "Big Band"-y they are (the Gruntz obviously should be). The Leary I'm just judging based on the size of the personnel listed in the credits.
OK, OK, OK. There IS a 3rd one I just found, also George Gruntz...
But I had no real memory of that one, so I'm suddenly wondering if there's actually maybe a 4th one???
OK, that might be it. I've been through one source, front to back (discogs.org). There's one other really DEEP Joe Henderson discography that I can go over at some point (maybe tonight, or tomorrow), and see if I can find anything there. It's all text-based, so it's gonna be a lot more tedious, but maybe something will jump out a me there.
Awesome! Idle Moments is my favorite record of all time. Not just regarding jazz, but all time - in the history of music. Joe Henderson's solo during the title track is perfection. Read the liner notes when you get a chance, there's a great story in there about the actual recording session.
First runs on ebay are go for more than $300 at the VG+ level . Don't be discouraged though, the 1970's reissues play great and can still be had for a more affordable price, so definitely grab one if you can! Also if you're anxious for a play copy on vinyl, represses can be had on Amazon for like $10-15. I bought a few of these for gifts and they play just fine.
Maria Schneider - Thompson Fields
Incredibly textured, emotional, and stunningly beautiful. Incredible musicians too. The title track made me pull over in my car to listen.
Lickety Split: The Music of Jim Mcneely
Amazingly creative, intelligent and fun arrangements.
Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra Live At The Village Vanguard -Compositions of Bob Brookmeyer
My favorite arranger. Just amazing music.
Madly Loving you - Bob Brookmeyer with The Ed Partyka Orchestra
Prominent arrangers composed music for Bob Brookmeyer. You can imagine the results when people try to impress their idol.
Thad Jones / Mel Lewis - Consummation
Just legendary.
Generally speaking, the studio recordings made for Verve have somewhat better sound, followed by Savoy and Dial. Artistically the reverse is true, and those Savoy and Dial collections linked to above sound pretty good.
For live recordings, some of the comparatively hi-fi releases are: Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Storyville, Montreal 1953, most of The Washington Concerts, Bird at the Hi-Hat, and the Complete Savoy Live Performances is good and includes the 1947 Carnegie Hall set. As with the studio stuff, lots of the best material is on somewhat technically inferior recordings. Chasin' The Bird is the best collection of these.
I don't know anything about the scene in Baltimore. Presumably touring acts stopped by there and they were hip to what was going on in New York.
The hottest jazz musicians in 1950 were Charlie "Bird" Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, and Miles Davis. They played the genre known as Bebop, or just Bop, which started ca. 1944. So bebop was mature at that point and was the dominant jazz style. Everybody wanted to play like Bird.
For some examples of live jazz in 1950, check out the Charlie Parker collection [Chasin' the Bird] (https://www.amazon.com/Chasin-Bird-Charlie-Parker/dp/B000BO5LYA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505098624&sr=8-2&keywords=charlie+parker+chasin%27+the+bird).
Here are some examples of post-war bebop:
Swing was the most popular music from 1934-1945, but it was in major decline in the post-war years. Bop bands typically were small combos of just 5 players --- sax, trumpet, piano, bass, drums.
The top singers of the day would be Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Your characters might also listen to popular R&B.
I actually dont know 20s stuff so much. This is 3CD I have - $10 used! https://www.amazon.com/Blanton-Webster-Band-Duke-Ellington/dp/B000003EO4 It's really great, honestly, I love the Juan Tizol compositions especially.

While it appears that lorises might make very good pets as they seem harmless and cute by many people, they are wild animals and not suitable to be kept as recreational livestock. The fact remains that they are only harmless once their teeth have been removed as they are capable of inflicting a toxic bite.
Mingus Ah Um has always been one of my favorites. Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane is a good album too. If you are looking for some amazing vocals check out some Nina Simone.
I do see it up there now for pre-sale, but nothing for immediate shipment. Is it still up?
Amazon looks like the place to get it ($138) at the moment too. Plus they always give you the lowest price if it dips. Gotta love that!

Europe grey market stuff is basically at best a cd pressed on a record. At worst it’s a cd pressed on vinyl with crap vinyl quality.
You’re much better off for Giant Steps either getting the 2017 mono which is a quiet flawless pressing or the Kevin grey mastered stereo , both on rhino, both fantastic sound.

Both are Waxtime pressing.
For context, a while ago we were discussing Jazz labels that put out knock-off or grey-market versions of albums on wax. The price on this one leads me to think it's probably one of those such pressings.
Amazon.ca also lists this version which looks to be a proper Blue Note re-issue, similar to the one my local shop has (at a similar price). It's a little more than I usually like to spend on a single album, but I also want to make sure I'm not getting some cheap knock-off.
The Roots - Home Grown: Guide to Understanding the Roots
If this isn't definitive of the genre, I don't know what is. A wide variety of material here, from some of the best.
Jay-Z. I think along with all the producers he's featured, he's always got the freshest beats and most soulful grooves. And of course the best flow out there.
