EDIT: Oh, and re: general critiques of religion, stay far away from New Atheists like Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris - this stuff if tripe, and there is better atheist literature out there. Check out Bertrand Russell, or better yet, Ludwig Feuerbach, Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud. I'd be happy to provide more specific references for these thinkers as well. I'm sure there are less highbrow atheist writers who are also good, I just don't know about them, and a lot of them today fall into the "New Atheist" category.

Not the OP but here’s a book list I recommend. Even if the books study Wicca, you can apply most of that knowledge to general witchcraft. Much of Wicca IS Witchcraft.

Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft and Buckland's Book of Spirit Communications are good books for getting a decent understanding of what could be (subjectively speaking) considered “traditional” witchcraft. I myself am NOT a fan of the Llewellyn branch of magick, as it is heavily based around forming structured groups and covens and much of the information seems more ceremonial than anything. That being said, these books give a great basic rundown into alot of different styles and tools you will most likely be using or want to use.

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner is great if you want to go down the Wicca path AND it’s made specifically for solitary practitioners along with having some of Scott Cunninghams own spells in it as well.

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs is a good rundown of many common and uncommon reagents used in witchcraft along with their metaphysical uses. Reader's Digest Magic and Medicine of Plants despite the name is a more practical and scientifically written book on the historical and medicinal used of many N. American plants.

Inside the Mirror Box: Spells and Theory for All Practitioners was actually written by a friend of mine. His book gives alot of information on actual spellwork, along with a large selection of Mirror Box spells and a short section on other uses for mirrors (such as divination).

And finally the Encyclopedia of Spirits is a great reference guide for those of us who want to work with specific entities. The author covers the full gamut of spirits and deities from the ancient gods to christian saints and archangels to lesser known spirits.

It seems to me, reading your post, that you are facing some mental blocks of your own creation. You say you are a 'spiritual dipshit' with 'disillusions of grandeur'. You also convey much fear, over and over, about various aspects of your spiritual practice, and your relations with others.

I would suggest, that while you have obviously had genuine spiritual experiences, what you lack is a context of a guiding philosophy to make sense of it all.

You are not a dipshit; you are made in the Image and Likeness of the Divine - and with that comes power and responsibility. Power to control your thoughts and experiences, and responcibility to do so wisely.

As to the fear - this is an illusion, created by your own ego. Fear can manifest results in your experience, but these are only the shadows of your bloated nothingness; the reflections of your fear itself. A healthy respect, and patience is essential, but nothing will block you in this or any other venture more so than fear.

I believe it is time that you set aside the development of spiritual phenomena until you have formed, to your own satisfaction, a working philosophy of the Spiritual, Divine nature of things and your relationship with IT. Realm Origin is a concept unique to Doreen Virtue, who created it after receiving information about it from the angels and then doing twenty years of study and research through survey and one on one analysis. Anyone who falls into a Realm is an Earth Angel, which is another word for Lightworker. There are four core realms: Incarnated Angel, Incarnated Elemental, Starperson, and Wise One. (They are what they sound like: angels; fairies; star seeds; and reincarnated spiritualists, sorcerers/esses, and people who studied the magic arts). Each one has a physical characteristics (like height and weight), spiritual characteristics (like etheric angel wings, fairy wings, or unicorn horns), dispositions, hobbies, likes and dislikes, a specific life purpose, relationship styles, financial styles, careers that would be ideal, and unique eye types that are the best way to identify someone's realm.

The core realms have subcategories, too. For Incarnated Angels, there are none until you get to the hybrid realms. And then there are some people who belong to realms that haven't been discovered or documented yet.

And then some people are not Earth Angels at all. Earth Angels are not the same thing as Indigos, Crystal or Rainbow Children or Starseeds.

It may sound cooky, but once you read Doreen's book and get to whichever chapter describes your realm, you might actually freak out at how specific and precise it is, as though she's writing about you as an individual. To get more information though, there's not much free literature out there or internet articles even though people who identify as Earth Angels tend to meet together online in big groups.

To study the realms and figure yours out (along with your life purpose - this is extremely helpful to some people as depression and anxiety occurs when you're not working on your divine life purpose), I would recommend getting the book Earth Angel Realms: Revised and Updated Information for Incarnated Angels, Elementals, Wizards, and Other Lightworkers by Doreen Virtue. It's a revised version that just came out this month. There are two books that were written prior to this over the last twenty years, but I would get the revised and most recent one as it has realms that aren't in the other books. The previous ones were called Realms of the Earth Angels and Earth Angels.

I myself am a Mystic MerAngel :) My Planetary Origin is Apollonia and Andromeda with more recent lifetimes spent on Sirius and in The Pleiades. My planetary origins have not been recent enough to effect me enough to be categorized as part of the Starperson Realm though.

I got an akashic record reading from one of my favourite self help authors a couple years ago. Her name is Sandra Anne Taylor. She wrote a book on how to access your Akashic records. She visually flips through a huge book. The reading was the fluffiest, way out there reading I have ever had & ever heard anyone have. Totally worth it for entertainment purposes. i put a recording app on my phone to record it as she was speaking. Now when I need a super ego boost about how incredible I am & have been I listen to it. I’d recommend setting up an appointment (she’s pretty pricey now tho, was worth it to me at the time cuz I have a ton of her books and admire her & had the urge for one). There’s also a lot guided meditations on YouTube to access your records. listen before you go to bed or when you just wake up in the a.m. If you have a pull to know! Look further into it!

Good article but it didn't really mention the entire branch of science related to this, Epigenetics. I really find this kind of stuff fascinating. It is just one of the many examples of how we are gaining a whole new perceptive on our understanding of the relationship between modern science and ancient philosophy. There are tons of great books out there on this topic if you are interested. One good one that I like is Spontaneous Evolution

You could start by building an altar. It doesn't have to have anything specific on it or be dedicated to any being or purpose. It just has to be a place where you can calm your mind or direct it toward a goal. There are tons of great books out there about altars that don't even take a witchy or supernatural angle (here are a couple I've liked) - it really is just a table or shelf full of items that are important to you. Photos of your ancestors, cool rocks and shells, incense, candles, and flowers are all good places to start. Then when you move on to things like casting spells or practicing meditation, you'll have a focal point that lets your brain know it's witchcraft time.

And believe it or not, I would actually recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to Alchemy to start. Don't be fooled by the title, it's a great intro, especially for such a complicated subject. Hauck just breaks things down in plain English (definitely NOT something you see every day when it comes to alchemy). Read this before attempting Jung! It'll make your life a whole lot easier :)

I agree that meditation would not be able to create DMT in the brain. In the traditional sense, meditation is the clearing or emptying of the mind of thoughts, or observing the passage of thoughts.

But, yes, DMT-like states of the brain can be naturally induced. I am not sure if the chemical itself is produced, but I don't think it needs to be. Many people are doing this today: shamans, medical intuitives, clairvoyants, various people researching consciousness technology.

I identify with a lot of the things you experience and am currently working to increase my own abilities. I suggest checking out Sonia Choquette's Ask Your Guides and The Psychic Pathway. She covers a lot of your points (feelings what others feel, effects of negative energy, strengthening your abilities, etc). She helped answer a lot of my questions and validate some beliefs. I'd also suggest meditation, if you don't already. Especially chakra meditations to open your third eye. I hope this may have helped and wish you luck on your journey.

ChristoPaganism would probably work well for you. From what I understand they tend to worship Mary as a goddess, and many believe in a larger divine feminine. A view like yours would mix well with Paganism as well. This book is a good starting place.

$70–110?! If you paid anywhere near those prices, you’ve been thoroughly ripped off. You can get the Centenary Edition, verbatim with the original 1908 edition, in hardcover from Amazon for $13.63.

That said, what you may learn from the book by studying it thoroughly is priceless. And if you do find such study profitable, then you may also enjoy “The Hermetic philosophy of ancient Egypt: An appreciation of The Kybalion, and a short study of the hermetic footprints that lead to the Wisdom of ancient Egypt.”

and a book that I recommend kind of a lot to people with a Christian background who are interested in moving beyond typical Christian teachings is A Course in Miracles. It can be really dense but includes a really well written (IMHO) workbook. Personally I think this book can, if nothing else, help bridge between a traditional Christian and magical worldview.

The book ChristoPaganism describes how some people combine Christianity with varios neo-Pagan traditions and talks a lot about an interesting theory of spirituality. I'm neither Christian nor Pagan but considered it a good read.

So when I stumbled in here, I saw a small downvote brigade and I'm not sure why. But I'll chime in.

I was raised in a small Methodist church and still regularly attend when I visit my mother because it makes her happy. Although I no longer consider myself a practicing Christian, my issues more derive from organized religion in general than any faith persay (I also do not identify as Wiccan).

If you do the research you may be surprised to find more witchcraft hidden among Christianity than you previously thought, especially if you were raised as Southern Baptist.

The major one off the top of my head is bibliomancy. Take a book, set it on it's spine, let it fall open and speak to you. A common way for pastors to find guidance in their sermons even today, and they'll say it's their God speaking to them. Maybe it is. But it's a form of divination none the less, found in many cultures; done with the I Ching, Qur'an, or any old book. My family, historically based in a rural farming community in Midwest America, used to be known as the area water witches (divination again) while retaining membership and status in the local church. There are more examples like this if you start to look around.

Personally, I am quite fond of Sorcerer's Stone: A Beginner's Guide to Alchemy, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Alchemy, and The Emerald Tablet: Alchemy for Personal Transformation by Dennis William Hauck. Great substance for the beginner, by an author with solid credentials on the subject.

Hauck is an instructor in the Alchemy Study Program and serves on the Steering Committee of the International Alchemy Guild. He also serves as project curator for the Alchemy Museum, opening in 2016 at Rosicrucian Park in San Jose.

It is an... intriguing field. The only well-known source I'm aware of is Crowley, whom I understand is controversial. I know there are accounts from the Renaissance of witches having sexual relationships with spirits, but I take anything from that period with a grain of salt.
Richard Cavendish's The Black Arts is a comprehensive guide for laymen, which does touch on sexual magic, but mostly Crowley's work. Other than that, I don't have much, but I'd love to learn more.

It does take years, and even in one week you may hardly notice anything, much less a single meditation.

It doesn't matter whether you work on one a day or all in one day. Either way it is helpful to give each area attention within a weeks time.

This is a good book, In Search of the Miraculous by Osho (not to be confused with Gurdjieff's book by the same title.) I've had mine on my shelf about 10 years, and am surprised to see it has become so expensive.

I believe Shirley McClain has a book out dealing with chakras, I think it is "Going Within" and may be at a local library. I think she uses that type of meditation quite a bit.

The idea is that in extreme antiquity there was some kind of event that caused humanity to be cut off from the original source. In some traditions they see that in the Garden of Eden story. Other traditions see it as the Atlantis story. So a large part of mysticism and Occult/Esoteric practice is focused on re-establishing that connection that was severed. That is done with various techniques. For instance the study of Torah using Gematria to discover the hidden secrets that God encoded for humans. There are many similar techniques in many traditions. Ultimately if you talk with enough mystics of many traditions they will all tell you similar things about the nature of God and the universe. I would love to sit down with a group of 10 or so people that are fascinated by these exact things and discuss all of it. The occult by definition is a secretive sect, and it is practically impossible to discover the many layers of secrets. That said, plenty can be learned. You know, it was ancient astronaut theory, the tree of life and the Axis Mundi that helped me redefine the research perimeters. I bet most people have no clue that H2 is primarily occult tidbits and a lot of stupidity.

I am positive that one of the major occult teachings have to do with Demeter and Persephone, but my work has shifted away from mystery religions for the time being. I'm probably going to do a "treatment" that will cover a fair bit of ground, with the hopes of getting published in a journal if I ever get that far. I need some doors to open. I don't care about making a bunch of money on sensationalism like some of these people. I don't think this stuff can be sold for cash money without it being vulgar. My concern is one for humanity. I believe a terrible storm is coming. People that haven't prepared their hearts and minds are going to have a rough time. People kinda snicker at first. Then I explain that Senomix is synthesized cells from human fetuses, and how it must be regarded as black magick. It is meant to defile the righteous by cannibalism, which is a form of Luciferian purification. It is in bottled water, soft drinks, various foods. I am infuriated over this particular matter. It's in everything. SIN-O-MIX..... I feel violated.

Pick up The Black Arts by Richard Cavendish if you can. He is an atheist, which he has made work for him. You need this book. Be careful practicing this stuff if you are compelled to do so. Stay away from gazing mirrors and summoning spells. Even Crowley warned against it. Anyway, I am curious as to what your professor will say to you. GL!
