The original story is much more interesting (and a little creepy).

If you really wanna do your homework, consider reading Nutcracker Nation. Might be a bit more than you're looking for, but there's a lot of interesting information there.

I was listening to a podcast last year and I made note of this book as I thought it might help me fight just this feeling. I don't know if it will help or not (as it is commercial just to buy it of course) but I hope perhaps it might provide some ideas for you: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1609078993/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3MW2NJC6OIC6U&coliid=I2DC0OX1FGQRD1

Just a few:

The Nativity: History and Legend by Geza Vermes

The Historical Figure of Jesus by EP Sanders (discusses the ahistoricity of the nativities in detail).

The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings by Bart Ehrman.

The First Christmas by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan

Excavating Jesus by John Domic Crossan and Jonathan L. Reed

The Star of Bethlehem: A Skeptical View by Aaron Adair.

I attended a lecture by the author of this book just the other day. He makes a pretty damn convincing case for the opposition of Christmas.

I have found this short little book by Manly Hall to give a satisfactory, if not brief version of the occult symbolism of Christmas.

You may be interested in this book.

It's about separating the actual history from the myth of the Nativity story. My wife accidentally picked it up for my super Christian parents, but after I read the back cover, I decided I wanted it for myself instead (and that they would probably not appreciate it).

A friend gave me this book last year, and I plan to include it in my Advent readings. I'm not too happy with it (it seems to sneak a lot of Christmas back into Advent), but I think it will be edifying anyway.

I, too, am open to suggestions about readings.

Did some research. The guy that owns the van is Bob Hickman. He actually has a couple of books published...I can't imagine what kind of psychotic ramblings those contain.

He also has a Youtube channel if you're interested in hearing/seeing the crazy for yourself.

>and a wood block to hang that says "Jesus is the reason for the season" with some propaganda article supporting it.

Ugh, I detest that inaccurate claim.

> Should I be passive aggressive this year and give her some literature on the real origins of Christmas?

Ooo, I like that idea! Let's see what's out there...

There's this website with some interesting viewpoints: https://www.livescience.com/25779-christmas-traditions-history-paganism.html

I use Amazon's ads for books because they usually include a preview, but you don't have to buy the books there:

I study biblical history as a hobby: Geza Vermes' "The Nativity: History and Legend" is on my nightstand and I went to three stores today to try and find the current Newsweek The Bible issue. The theology side of it, including the fact that people actually follow the religion today, doesn't interest me in the least.
