So, one good thing to note. When it comes to eyes on animals (also known as amigarumi), they don't need to use safety eyes or anything like that, they can just create sewn eyes from black/white yarn and the like. There are a lot of really great amigurumi patterns/books about geeky/video game crochet as well, so those might be good for your son.

One skein wonders is a popular book, so that would be a good choice. Sea creatures also looks interesting. Crochet ever after will require too many bits to be worthwhile, but their other book, beastly crochet has more potential, but i don't see an amazon seller for it. Crochet animal hats is adorable and will do well.

As for other books you may want to look into:

The Big Book of Little Amigurumi

Edward's Menagerie

Pocket Amigurumi

Crochet Star Wars

Once Upon a Time in Crochet

Amigurumi Monsters

I have made patterns from some but not all of these, but if she's made stuffed animals before, she'll be able to follow all of these. And like I said, patterns calling for saftey eyes can be replaced by just hooking some yarn into the fabric instead. I hope these help!

value is really in the eye of the buyer. what they are willing to pay. I use ebay as a good guide, but most thing are overpriced especially when you consider shipping, as the price may be great but then you'll see $40 for shipping on one action figure. here are a few guides that have used in the past:
http://smile.amazon.com/Ultimate-Vintage-Action-Figures-1977-1985/dp/1440240590/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462312323&sr=8-1&keywords=star+wars+price+guide

keep in mind also most of these came out before the force awakens and a resurgence in the force, so values may be under-priced.
also I have several of these books if you need me to look up items, I would be more than happy to.

u/angrygr33k · 1 pointr/HotWheels

I use this book to find out which different variations are worth more. My collecting largely involves 1988-2010 items so this book covers most of it and you can see how the cars evolved across those years. I don't find any of the new models to be interesting, also I like finding ones that I played with as a kid as opposed to finding new stuff. But everyone has their own likes/dislikes and you should collect what you want to collect, not try to match what everyone else does. There are plenty of resources, also use the Wiki to search different things and try to find your niche on collecting. Best of luck!

u/ThaddeusJP · 1 pointr/HotWheels

My thoughts - There are two ways to go here: Cars or Display.

You can find legit original release hotwheels (from 1968) online, on card, from $200 all the way up to your limit but I might suggest display cases for ones he already has.

If you're dead set on cars maybe spend around $15 on a HotWheels guide to give him and look though it with him to talk about cars and see what ones he really likes. https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Wheels-Field-Guide-Identification/dp/1440232091/ I have that one (4th ed) and it is pretty good. Covers all the early stuff well.

u/Turmatic · 2 pointsr/Zippo

The very short explanation is that Blaisdell produced the first Zippos in November 1932. SALES of the Zippos did not start until 1933. Here is a pretty good history of 1933 Zips.

http://lightergallery.com/1933-zippos

A much better explanation can be found by buying this book..

https://www.amazon.com/Zippo-American-Lighter-Schiffer-Collectors/dp/0764323377

Zippo started selling the “1932 Replicas” when much of this history was not known/clear. Once the info was discovered, Zippo started calling 1933 the birthdate of Zippo.

If you want to dive in I highly recommend this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Pipesmoking-A-21st-Century-Guide/dp/0931253152

There are also a bunch of guides that explain the differences between types of pipe tobacco.

Welcome to the club!

u/smellthehatfirst · 6 pointsr/PipeTobacco

Every now and again a pipe man gets the perfect smoke. It's hard to re-create, but we all chase those moments.

It is not an accident that it is the title of Fred Hanna's book. Fred Hanna can be a frustrating man to read, but he has a lot of useful information to impart, and putting up with his in-your-face persona as an author is just the price paid to learn what he has learned.

The most important thing in his book, in my opinion, is the Hanna "Air Pocket" method of packing one's pipe. That has changed my life.

Pipe Smoking: A 21st Century Guide
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0931253152?pc_redir=1411904729&robot_redir=1

This is the only book I have about pipes. I love it and have read it cover to cover. It has loads of information about both pipes and tobacco.

u/Wesc0bar · 2 pointsr/pinball

The Pinball Compendium books are awesome.

u/just_like_arcadia · 25 pointsr/continuityporn

False

It's not the same yoyo at all.

The original yo-yo is a Lumar Genuine Championship 99.

https://www.amazon.com/Luckys-Collectors-Guide-Century-Yo-Yos/dp/0966761200

*Edit: It looks like the one Capaldi is holding is a Kalmar Trissan but I'm not sure. Definitely not a Lumar. Checking my references and contacts to see for sure.

u/LBobRife · 2 pointsr/AskHistorians

I read this book: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Cigars-Steve-Luck/dp/B004E3XIKI/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&qid=1347053165&sr=8-37&keywords=cigars which has a brief history of the cigar. It gave an even briefer history of early tobacco use. I do remember it was an extremely profitable trade because it wouldn't grow very well in Europe, so shipping it overseas was necessary.

u/n1c01a5 · 1 pointr/philosophie

u/cknipe · 2 pointsr/cigars

For those unaware, PG is the author of a moderately influential book, The Gourmet Guide to Cigars -

https://www.amazon.com/Gourmet-Guide-Cigars-Paul-Garmirian/dp/0962704601

He's also had some very unflattering things to say about the current state of the boutique cigar industry:

This is the one I use Its really nice but it is the size of a real book, so its hard to take to hefs.

Damn those Southern Island cards look nice, I believe they were never released in Europe though, and the only reason I recognize these is because I had this guide which I found in a store here.

On this special interview episode we sit down with author and expert toy collector Mark Bellomo to chat about the hobby, his toy collection, and his brand new book The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Transformers Action Figures. All this and much, much more on this episode of TransMissions!

I don't plan on, but after some digging, you can buy a paperback copy here

u/Gully_Foyle · 1 pointr/IAmA

The Paul Garmirian Gourmet Guide To Cigars isn't bad, but it was first written over a decade ago and even with updates, is fairly dated. It should give you a decent overview.

Stay away from Cigar Aficionado, it's absolute shit for learning about cigars. As a second rate Robb Report it's not bad. In fact most ratings in the trade magazines should be ignored completely.

Just smoke cigars, and talk to people. Don't be afraid to have an opinion, or to not have one at all on a particular cigar.

u/HanSolosSizzledHeart · 13 pointsr/StarWarsLeaks

Also, shout out to Nathan Butler's whole From the Star Wars Home Video Library series.

He gets EVERY Star Wars release and goes in depth on all of them. He even wrote a book on the subject!
