To get him used to the car, get him in it for short, boring drives often. If he's too nervous for that, just get him in the car in the driveway and gradually work up to moving the car. Don't go anywhere. Lots of rewards for getting in. More rewards for great behaviour. Start the car, and give more rewards. Try to make the car enticing rather than scary. Sit in there and give him a bone or fun toy when you're not moving.

Some dogs get nauseated in the car, so you could consider crating him there and covering the crate so he can feel the motion, but not see the world whizzing by.

The first step in relieving anxiety in dogs is getting the dog some exercise. While he's not a pup anymore, he still needs to get out and chase things. Border terriers were fox dogs, so get him someplace safe and bring a frisbee or a ball - he's a chaser. Don't overdo it if he's not used to a lot of exercise. Take him to places that don't stress him out. Flirt poles are great for indoors and out and don't require that you go anyplace special. You can make your own really easily - there are tons of instructions online.

Thunderstorms - don't coddle him or hug him. If you can get him interested, play with him. Throw a toy, play tug...whatever makes him happy. You can lean on him to provide comfort if he's not into play. A blanket or towel tossed over his crate (if he has one) can help with storms as well. Setting up a temporary crate-like structure for him to hide him may help as well.

This is my dog, tinks! She's my lovebug and absolutely amazing.

This is my other dog, mocha. She's a silly fluffball of cuteness.

Mocha loves tearing everything to shreds, but she hasn't broken this yet and it's been about a month.

THIS IS SO EXCITING! I hope you absolutely love being a dog owner! I got tinks at a very dark time in my life and she seriously saved my life. I can't even begin to think about how much both my dogs have done for me. Be sure to post pictures once you get him!!! Oh, and thanks for the contest!!!!

If I won, I'd love this

Thanks again!! <3

  • Dishes: should be stainless steel and washed every time you use them. I feed raw in big, frozen chunks which slow my dog down.
  • Collars: I don't trust the little 3/4" plastic slide release buckles on most collars. Depending on the material they have a 100-200lb breaking strength and can be brittle in the cold. Fine for a little dog, but my 130lb guy gets a 2" double layer leather with welded steel hardware AKA an agitation collar. This Collar is incredibly well made and a great value. In regards to your opinion on "shock collars" - remote stimulation collars are very effective training tools when used properly. The idea is not to cause pain, it's to use it at a stimulation level that your dog barely notices and train him that that sensation means you want his attention. I use mine at a level that just barely tingles the back of my hand and can recall my dog when he's out of earshot. I can also use it to get his attention when off leash in noisy areas and give him hand signals. I use the vibrate function like one would use a clicker - to mark behavior that I want to encourage. Granted, most people use them totally incorrectly.
  • Leash: I use a 3/4" by 5' biothane leash. It's strong, grippy and has a O-ring on the handle for tying your dog to a parking meter, etc. Retractable leashes aren't allowed under my local leash laws (though many people still use them). I hate them. You are not 100% in control of your dog unless it is locked and at that point, you might as well use a regular leash.
  • Toys: Tuffy's Mega Ring last decently well for a soft toy. My dog goes through kong extremes in a week and most "indestructible" toys in a matter of minutes or hours. For me, it's all about cheap toys. If you can train your dog not to swallow bits that he rips off, mine loves big, orange, traffic cones which you can pick up for $2.
  • Crates: Depends on the dog. Mine can be alone at home for 16 hours and not "investigate" the garbage, bark, or get into any trouble at all. We've trained him to open the door and relieve himself in a corner of our patio if he needs to. He also gets 2 hours of vigorous off-leash exercise every morning and an hour walk in the evening - he's all about a nice quiet day on the couch.
  • Brushes: Not a fan of the furminator - it cuts hair, not brushes it. The sticky silicone Kong ZoomGroom is great at pulling off loose hair/undercoat.

just disclaimer some of these toys should only be played with under your supervision so use your best judgement. Check any rubber or stuffed/fabric toys daily for wear and if you see it starting to come apart throw it away as any loose pieces can be swallowed and cause a blockage. My ferrets aren’t chewers they just like to have toys to stash so I’m not as worried but everyone’s ferrets are different so be careful. Also you could make a dig box with rice (never instant) or dried pasta which is a lot of fun for them. They love tunnels, they love to dig, and they love to steal and stash small objects so the toys meet that criteria they’ll be happy lol

So, I would totally have sent you a card if I knew your address! In fact, you can still send me your address, and I will send you a silly belated card, if you'd like! ♥

Burthdays suck when no one notices you. I've had that happen a lot, because my Birthday was always during winter break in college, and there was no one to celebrate with except my parents (which was fine, but sometimes it feels good to be loved by your friends!)

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Here's a dog that really wants you to enjoy your day!

I absolutely don't need this octopus toy for my dog!

But it sure would put a smile on my face, and everyone's face on RAOA, if she played with it and I took photos/video of her enjoying herself!

OOOOH that is so nice of you to adopt a pit! I will wear my SAVE THE BULLIES shirt today in your honor. I work at an emergency kennel for dogs of all breeds who haven't been placed yet but have been just pulled out of bad situations by their rescue. We get pits sometimes but right now we are overrun with 28 coonhounds! YOu never know at my job.

INdestructable toy on Amazon would be any of the Tuffy brand toys like this one. They last way longer around the kennel than other toys, for sure. Of course, they can be chewed up a little at a time but they really will last a lot longer than a standard stuffie.

Here is my sweet baby girl, Darlene the basset hound. I adopted her from Belly Rubs Basset Rescue.

I can't imagine life without her. She is so sweet and gentle that I can take her anywhere and she has accompanied me on many outdoors excursions. She is a bit of an outdoors woman as you can tell from these pictures:

  • OUTDOORS 1 life jacket
  • OUTDOORS 2 in Cherokee

She has been a foster sister to seven dogs from a variety of backgrounds, showing them the proper way to act and helping them become better dogs by modeling good behavior. She has provided that kindness to abused and neglected dogs and dogs with handicaps. She is a sweet girl. Here she is with one of her foster brothers (note: I do only have one foster at a time): Duke and Darlene

And here she is laughing at another dog in an elf costume...

It may just be a matter of finding toys that can keep him engaged. There are toys that are like catnip kickers or static little stuffies, but then there are also some that are battery-operated or plug in (lasers, concealed motion toys, magnetic toys).

My personal preference, especially if I'm not home to supervise are toys that can be active with just the cat's actions alone. This woven straw is one of my cat's favourites because it catches in her claws as she swats it, so as she moves, it follows her motion until it uncatches and flings off, so she'll go chase it.

I've got this cheap little wand that I use to play with her that moves fairly unpredictably and actually got my cat panting because she was so into it.

Another thing I do everyday is spend 15-20 minutes making her chase her meal. I feed wet food during the day and offer a limited amount of kibble at night, so what I do with the kibble is toss it up the stairs or around the house within her sight so she chases each piece to get fed. I do this until she gets so tired that she has to lie down 3 or 4 separate times, and then I let her rest.

After that, I fill some foraging toys with some more kibble so she has something to work for. If your cat is food motivated, this could work well for you too because it keeps them mentally and physically busy. I have a treat ball and a Wobbert (a little more challenging than a regular treat ball) but I find they're quick to solve and not very engaging. Most of the ones I get are dog toys:

u/accentmarkd · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

My dog is the same kind of power chewer. "Indestructable" toys last about 20 minutes with him before they are obliterated. We're worried about him breaking a tooth on the real bone/antlers as I've been warned that intense chewers can be a bit too intense with those. There is however a nylabone synthetic antler that we got our dog and he LOVES IT.

We also have the power chewer nylabone which is his second string nylabone love. Neither nylabone is indestructible, but it is taking him a while to get through them.

His favorite toy though is the hurley. He's obsessed with it. We got it as a gift for the holidays and it still looks identical to the way it was when we got it. It's similar to kong material but solid, so he can chew on it pretty intensely without being able to rip any chunks out because there's nothing to really grab hold on. It's our all around favorite to. We play fetch and tug with it in addition to him just sitting and chewing it like a bone on his own.

Crusoe has made these popular, but Oscar and all his friends absolutely love these things. They fit perfectly in his mouth and squeak for months. They're the only toys he doesn't destroy within 5 minutes.

u/lzsmith · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

I think the good medium is to reserve soft toys for interactive one-on-one play with you, and put them away when you're done playing. Ropes and fleeces are good for that purpose. If it feels soft then it's also chewable.

If he likes the squeaky noise the plush toys make, you could look for rubber toys that squeak.

Looks like you have a good list going, remember to update your pups microchip with your address and get him/her a tag with your details.

We got a 36 inch crate and it's plenty big for our boy (he's around 30 pounds).

Puppia harness is a great starter harness, it's soft and doesn't have a bunch of metal jingling pieces which our puppy HATED on his harness our breeder gave us.

Kibble, check out dog food advisor for reviews and ratings of foods content, we were using grain free salmon and sweet potato from chicken soup for the soul, it's decently priced and well rated I can't find it anywhere atm so we're switching him back to their normal kibble.

Salmon Oil is a lifesaver in the winter, our pup gets terribly dry skin and extremely itchy without it.

Start out with a puppy kong, they sell kong fillers that are cheese and peanut butter flavored, our puppy was pretty picky at first and only ate the cheese one, didn't like frozen kongs either.

I'd start with a Basic Collar here's a Dog Tag Silencer and a Break-away collar for outdoors or dog park. A dog was choked unconscious at our park so I typically just keep our guys ID tags on his harness and don't use a collar, but if you do I definitely recommend a break-away if you are primarily using a harness with it.

Items we found useful: Bed Liner, Crate Fence, Kong, Stainless Steel Bowls (highly reccomend US made do not buy any made in China for health reasons), Zippy Paws Hide and Seek toys, Potty/accident cleaner, Potty Bells, Anti-chew Bitter Apple spray, 50 ft Leash, Retractable Leash, Soft stop Leash extender, Car Seat Belt, Car Booster Seat, Gentle Shampoo, Comb, Travel Water Bottle, Flirt Pole, Special Treats, Chew Stick, Greenies

Sorry for the HUGE list lol, feel free to ask any questions!

I have a pit/boxer mix-- so lots of energy. If your dog has a high prey drive, you can use this toy, it's called a "flirt pole". http://www.amazon.com/Bow-Wow-Flirt-Pole-Exercise-Fleece/dp/B007O02C6Y

You can make them pretty easily also using a pvc pipe and rope. My dog loves it and it tires her out after about 20-30 minutes of chasing it around outside. Good luck!

heres my dog album

I have two pitbulls, had a third till she got sick and had to be put down :( and an australian shephard who is strong enough to pull both my pits around when they play tug of war. i know exactly what toys last the longest.

This ball is by far their favorite and lasts until we lose them. your dog will rip off the feet, the horns and the squeeker but the ball part will last forever!

Other pit owners claim this will last forever it took my dogs less than a minute to rip it open and rip out the stuffing. however, the outside has lasted a very long time! so if you dont mind it being split open it should last.

if i see a garage sale or go to a thrift store ill pick up a basket ball the dogs pop it immediately and it gets ripped apart but the majority of it has lasted a long time

if you go grocery shopping they have beef bones im pretty sure that what their called. but they not only feed your dog but the bones last a long time too.

if i win, the tick twister would be great since i live in the woods and its tick season.

Not sure if this will help you at all, but it's a thought!

My Dory (who was a feral mountain dog for her first two years) isn't typically interested in food-in-bowl unless it's a challenge. Typically she only dives in (and finishes it all as quickly as she can) if:

  1. our kitten has been showing interest in her bowl

  2. one of her k9 cousins (including a Husky puppy and a fully grown Golden) is interested in her bowl

  3. we're giving her food in a toy like the Kong Wobbler, Jigsaw Glider or Buster Cube.

This may, or may not, be similar to your dog's apparent hunger for a challenge, or performing a trick, before he eats; you used to make him sit first, now he wants to earn his food through more of a challenge?

I've had my dog for 5 months, and the first toy I bought him is still his favorite: Kong Tennis Pals Hedgehog, Large, $7.70 at Amazon and Chewy.

He took out the tennis ball (which I threw away), and he loves to just hold it down & gnaw on it. He's a 100-lb, 5 year-old Dutch Shepherd, by the way, and has some powerful jaws, so durability is essential, and this Kong hedgehog is perfect.

I have read some reports of dogs breaking their teeth on Nylabones, and they have never been our dogs' favorite thing anyway, so here are some alternate ideas for ya:

  • Tie off a squeaky tennis ball loosely, in an old sock. Depending on the weave and material of the sock this toy will last from 20 minutes to 4 days.

  • Toilet paper and paper towel tubes, or plain cardboard sections (no dyes or tape, etc.; I often use the unprinted flaps of shipping boxes). Non-toxic, fibrous if they ingest it, and it lets them destroy something without costing you a penny.

  • Fill a treat ball with 10-15 small, soft, training treats, and watch them push it around with their nose for the next 10-30 minutes.

  • Build a treat puzzle yourself with layers of non-toxic boxes, take out containers (NO STYROFOAM), and newspaper. Sprinkle small treats in each layer and hold it all together with a little string or paper tape.

  • Like most breeds, both the Staffy and Terrier lines love to lay tug of war. If your dog has good teeth you can use something like this, or this one if they have any oral issues. Just remember to put away toys like this when you are not actively using them, or they will get shredded/chewed to bits.

    Have fun!

The best plush I have ever had for my guy has been the Tuffy Octopus. You can get other Tuffy style toys at Petsmart and Petco pretty easily but the octopus design has always held up the best. It still gets chewed up, but it is a matter of months as opposed to hours or even minutes.

... yeah. =( it litterally sings happy birthday. Lol! If you're better with crinkle material and a squeaker there's this one!

u/someonespookie · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Agree with you on this. My dog LOVES chewing on this one and it's still going strong!

Amy's favorites are:

Fat Cat "Gruntleys" Pig (she has a blue one)

KONG Squeezz Balls

She's also loves regular 'ol KONG toys, and any plush toy that squeaks. She really loves that pig though.

Our boxer has a special love for destroying things, but a few toys that have managed to last:

  • Good old fashioned Kong's
  • Pocket Treat thing from JW -Obsessed with this thing
  • Chuckit Kick it - Purchased after she loved a foam soccer ball to death
  • Chuckit Rebounce - only tennis ball/fetch balls that don't get crushed to smithereens
  • Tuffy soft toys - she wanted to rip all the stuffing out when she first got it, but besides that first little tear its held up
  • We've also braided together old sheets to make long tug of war toys, the solid sheet fabric seems to hold up better than regular rope toys.

Squeeky penguin!

Roxy is my furry child! haha She caught parvo in April and was very sick for almost a month. We thought we were going to lose her at one point but she made it through! We had to throw away all of her toys because they could have been contaminated so we're trying to build her stash back up haha!

Here we are. This was the day she started acting like how she was before she got sick. And sorry we look so grubby we had just returned from the gym haha. Thank you for the contest!

here are a few of my dogs favorites!

freeze dried rabbit ears

floppyz squeaks large cow (surprisingly durable)

zippypaws popcorn bucket (not very durable but my guy loves these hides)

chicken feet

monkey bread biscuits

I've given our Rotties this pig before and it lasted months as opposed to days for other tough toys.
Our dogs also enjoy the stretchy and nice smelling rubber toys from Beco and they've lasted years. Their stuffed toys last a while too.
Our family also go for latex a lot of the time as it's stretchy and holds up to chewing and roughhousing very well. Two of the latex toys they have right now are this stick and this pig.
Also you can't ever go wrong with a basic rope toy.

[You can also get them on Amazon]

But it's probably cheaper to make one yourself. Good luck. :)

My beagle/chihuahua mix LOVES these Kong Squeez toys. They are the only rubber toys/balls I have been able to buy for her that she doesn't destroy. She's also a big fan of rope toys!

u/insomniactive · 0 pointsr/dogs

They're made by Zanies Pet Toys. [Amazon link:] (http://www.amazon.com/Zanies-6-Pack-Latex-PrePack-Small/dp/B000Y8WTFC/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1L4LS2KNDBWYV)

My dog LOVES these too! I also have luck using them as replacement squeaks.

u/notheretosellcookies · 1 pointr/pitbulls

The ball got destroyed immediately but the squeaker on this has actually proved pretty durable (so far): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PRDB3TC. Otherwise, I go for elk antlers (a friend and I went in on a bulk buy from here: http://www.elkantlerdogchews.com/bulk-purchase.php).

I spy with my little eye.

My furbaby's birthday is coming up and one of these

Birthday Collar

Cake Toy

would be awesome :) Both are on my $10 and Under list

Mix ground meat with mashed sweet potato. Stick it in a West Paw Tux or a Kong Quest. My dog loves it.

u/Armyless · 1 pointr/greatdanes

This Blue West Paw Design- Zogoflex has lasted nearly a year in our house with a grumpy Great Dane learning to play fetch.

u/reddit_username_yo · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

My pup destroys anything with stuffing, and does a number on rope toys as well. He also loves the squeak, so I got some soft no stuffing toys thinking they might last a few days and at least be less of a mess. After 3 weeks, the first of the 3 pack is gross from slobber but otherwise unharmed - he's just happy with the squeaking, and doesn't rip at it.

This is the Amazon link for the ones I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P0YQYYW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/GeorgeAndPFunl · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

I got this Tuffy Mega Ring toy for Christmas and laughed thinking... "Okay, my boxer will have gutted this thing in 20 mins". He chews it every day for 8 months and has never torn it or gotten a piece off it. Highly recommended.

Oh man lol. I buy my dogs Westpaw toys and haven't had any break yet. She eats hardwood sticks sticks, like 6 inch in diameter (slowly). She chews through ropes (if not watched and told to stop lol). She used to eat her stuffed toys, so we quit buying them. Thankfully she's only a 35 pound herding dog, so the westpaw indestructable toys have been plenty for her. This seems like it is going to last her forever. They offer a 1 time warranty if your dog destroys the toy too.

u/DoggilyWoggily · 1 pointr/puppy101

Oh my gosh. I work from home and have been trying to think of as many things as possible!

I use a LOT of paper bags, toilet paper/paper towel tubes and boxes of different shapes. My dog is really small, so it takes her a while to get through those. I've put kibble in the ends of long socks too (she can't chew through the sock, so it takes her a while to get them out).

I use small kongs, and just got this that I modify by stuffing all kinds of things in that she has to get out.

Thanks for posting this! Would love to see more ideas!

u/eastbond · 1 pointr/dogs

My 5.5 year old Cockapoo, Clancy, looooves tennis balls, Zippy Paws squeaky toys (specifically the ones with squeaky toys inside that he has to take out), and squeaky rubber balls. Pro tip on the Zippy Paws: you can find them at HomeGoods in the US for a fraction of the cost.

Zippy Paws

Squeaky Balls

Have fun!

u/trekbette · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

The first one we got as a freebie when buying something else lasted my two wiener dogs a long time. My pretty girl passed away and we ended up with my boy dog's 1/2 doxie daughter.

They go through squeaky toys like they grow on trees. We got this Kong ballistic tug of war toy for them, and it lasted about three minutes. Three damned minutes before it was just shredded. It was $20 at the pet store!

I think we will be looking into these rubber belts the /u/beeblez talked about.

u/AngryMaiden · 2 pointsr/pitbulls

My dog loves these and so far he hasn't been able to destroy it. They make frisbees too.

We have the remnants of one of those firehose frisbees in our yard - that's probably the toughest actual 'fabric' toy we've found. Mostly we've just resigned ourselves to spending a small fortune on dog toys...

u/wicksa · 2 pointsr/puppy101

My dog is a great deal smaller than yours, but she is a beast. She chews regular kongs up into pieces in hours. I have to get her the black x-tra stong kongs.

these are some other toys that seem to last more than a few days:

tires

antlers

"Tuffy" Stuffed animals-- although she does eventually get to the stuffing, these last longer than regular stuffed toys.

empty, crumpled up water bottles. though its a bit noisy.
