Thanks! I am eventually going to remake him but for now I like him well enough. And my son likes it so that's the important part. Haha. As for the eyes. They are called safety eyes. I used to buy them at hobby lobby in the doll parts section but now I buy from amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KKG0XJQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kYEKzb690WNRS

1- Get a bag or two of these guys.

2- Age the wood. It's cheap and easy.

3- Paint or carve different cool designs. You know the stuff. Make them look like game pieces from a board game inside dungeons and dragons. Have some distinct to any other and a couple of groupings. You can use desaturated or dark colors in the aging and colorcode creatures. Use colors that let the good grain visible for better effect.

3.2- You can have some of them color coded or personalized for your party. You can tie stuff to them: a leather stripe, wire, glue glass beads for the sorcerer, a feather for the druid. You can carve or paint symbols: a holy symbol for the cleric, something runic for the dwarf, the dragonborn's initials in draconic, whatever.

3.3- You also have different sizes for bigger or smaller creatures.

4- Profit. Now you have a varied, abstract, easy to follow, customized set of pawns for all your needs, dirt cheap and that doubles as props because they look medieval fantasy AF.

4.2- Extra points if you get a parchment battle mat. Double that if you get those dice that look like bone, gems or any other cool medieval fantasy look.

5- Send pictures to r/DnDIY

Thank you! ☺️

Here's the pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/claude-the-octopus

Eyes:

Orange: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075L5J9H5/

Blue: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073ZMMD41/

Purple: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075RTYCPH

I liked the purple, but my son went for the orange 😊

I used Plymouth Encore worsted because I wanted him a little more snuggly than if I'd used Red Heart acrylic. It made him softer, but it also means I needed to stitch him tighter.

Edit: added eye info

Thank you so much! I'm glad I could share the joy it brought me!! It's milliput painted with Citadel acrylics!! Then sealed with varnish for that oozy gleam 😁 and the eyes are seriously the best thing I ever found at Michael's!

I got them on amazon, they are just plastic safety eyes with washers that go on the inside of the stuffed animal to keep it in place and not let kids pull they eyes out. (Copies and pasted the link on my phone. Hope it works)

You might be too far along for this to work for this project, but in the future you could make a groove around the doll's arm. Then on the cloth part, you can make a drawstring opening the will fit into the groove when tightened. This shows that kind of construction: https://www.amazon.com/Fityle-Handmade-Silicone-Eyeballs-Newborn/dp/B07L93GBP5/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=kit&qid=1569015914&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-4 (I know absolutely nothing about that seller, brand of doll or anything. It was just the best picture I could find quickly!).

I like to use safety eyes on the toys I make, and I know that they're made in solid colors, too. They're generally accepted by new parents (myself included, and I was paranoid!). With those, you just have to make sure it snaps in all the way.

Another alternative is to make sure the button is bigger than the baby's mouth for as long as it'll be wearing the item. Problem is, this could make the garment heavy in weird places.

Side note: tiny baby teeth can and will chew through yarn, especially if it's a nice texture that helps them break through the gum.

Have you seen this? it's not official and kind of expensive, but still pretty cool.

Like these?

Also I use super glue to attach them

You might consider "taxidermy" beads. I use these for my carvings and they require a lot less work to mount. I use a drill with some .7mm jeweler's bits and I don't even need to use glue - the little pins fit perfectly.

I bought mine off amazon.ca and they came in 24 hrs. A day earlier than expected. I do have prime though.

For those if you wondering, this isBraq the Jointed Dragon from Thingiverse. It’s assembled using 2mm elastic cord (but I would recommend using 3mm even though it’s a little tougher to fit).

I used TTYT3D Silk Gold Filament. I recommend printing at .15 or .2 mm layer heights as the filament dulls if it gets too hot for too long.

The eyes are just a set of assorted eyes from Amazon. They’re held in with standard wall tack.

These were the ones I was looking at. I haven't used safety eyes yet, but they seem good for the price.

u/gruebeard · 2 pointsr/crochet

Very nice!

Also, as someone who makes a lot of octopuses...I got these eyes off of Amazon for what three or four of those little packs of eyes would cost at the craft store.

u/sewsalot · 1 pointr/crafts

Have you looked at plastic safety eyes, they poke through the fabric and have a washer on the back to keep them in place. Amazon has a ton of them in different shapes sizes and colors.

I much prefer safety eyes! Sometimes they don’t look quite right on a project though and I’ll sew on eyes instead. I’ve used buttons too for an older look but sometimes it looks creepy. You can also do felt eyes.

Sewing is preferable over safety eyes for items for children due to choking hazard, but I have never been able to get safety eyes off a project no matter how hard I’ve tried! I actually recently had to completely redo a head because I put the eyes in the wrong row and I could not for the life of me get them off.

I get these safety eyes off Amazon.

It may sound funny, but I'm totally serious, you need glow in the dark stars! They make everything more magical! :D

Safety eyes are designed to not be easily pulled off and come in different colours, but you'd have to poke little holes in the felt. Just don't push the washer all the way down in the back, and you'll still have a bit of post to hang ornaments on. Only problem is the back side. Maybe another layer of felt to cover the pokey ends of the eyes?
