I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009EETKVI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That brand makes other sizes / colors. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. I've had it for a year now and have slept on it every single night in that period of time. It definitely has gotten a bit "worn in" and isn't as cushy as it used to be, but it's still super comfortable.

Honestly, the only problem I've had with it is that it did have a very strong smell at first, but some fabric spray and a day of airing out worked wonders. Would also highly recommend a mattress protector.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions at all!

I have this one in my van and it's awesome. Very firm, but a mattress topper would do fine for people who don't like their bed as firm as I do.

I built an interlocking frame for it - slides out for the bed, slides in with the side against the wall for a couch. Inspired by (but simpler than) this one:

Futons and pull-outs are totally different. Pull-out couches have light, super thin pads that don't do anything. Generally very uncomfortable. Futon mattresses are (or should be; mine is and my parents have a similar one) very heavy, very dense, and very firm. They're awesome beds.

This is the one my husband and i are looking at. We are also moving out next year and want to get rid of our bed so I don’t have any experience with these yet but hopefully this helps somewhat.

Low budget is also light weight... which directly effects mpg. So...

Super light weight here in an e150 window van.

One sheet of 3/4” ply cut to go across the back as a bed and a second cut to act as a shelf on the wheel wells. I have all flat sterilite tubs of different sizes for all my things nearly organized.

I bought on of these too It’s very comfortable for me and i have serious back problems.

I have a nice cooler that holds 20lbs of ice for 4 days and a Weber Portable grill I keep things very simple.

For toilets? I use it at the grocery store, cafe, job, or gym. I DO have an emergency bucket with dust free cat litter and a cut pool noodle in the event of a for real case of the poops. Never had to use it.

Ahh, futons aren't too bad, you just can't use the cheap lumpy futon mattresses. You have to find a thick one, like this.

u/CarnationFoe · 1 pointr/japan

There are all kinds from mattress toppers to just sheets. If you're just trying to keep it clean, just buy a simple thin quilt, cut to size and add optional elastic straps at the corners. that's what's often used.

If you want to buy one, here's a fitted sheet for a Japanese futon: https://www.amazon.ca/EMOOR-Cotton-Fitted-Mattress-Japanese/dp/B07319PRNF?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duc12-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B07319PRNF

Why not just get a futon mattress like this? It is only 75" long so you might have to curl up a bit, but it's a full size so you have plenty of room (especially for overnight guests). I just ordered this for my new apartment, actually.

Price was my main concern here since I moved into an empty house temporarily. So ymmv, it's nice enough though and has springs in it not just a pad. Better alternative than a used mattress with possible bedbugs IMO

If the room is really that small, even a twin bed will take a lot of space. Perhaps a shikubuton?

i use this bed frame and this futon mattress.

I got mine for about $55 (new) on eBay. I've seen them on Amazon for $65 plus shipping. There is another type that is filled with cotton, but although this type is rollable, I didn't think I would care for the bumps. You can get a far more expensive shikibuton, but I was/am on a budget.

u/AxisOfAwesome · 1 pointr/Frugal

yeah no shit. Here's a traditional Japanese futon with 5 stars on Amazon for $75

u/dharrington2013 · 1 pointr/vandwellers

Speaking of which, I got a 'Japanese-style futon mattress' on amazon and it's worked great. Obviously meant to be folded in up to ~90 degrees (though with my build it doesn't get past like ~135). I'm sleeping on mine full-time so I threw a 2" memory foam topper on for extra padding and it's worked great. The only thing I'll say is that the futon might be a little more difficult to cut (if you don't fit in one of the standard sizes like I did) since it'll require some sewing, but still entirely possible. You'll have no problem with any modifications to the memory foam
