I'm pretty sure that M2 3 wood is the greatest wood I've ever hit & definitely best one I've ever owned!

Also here's Some headcover options for M2 Driver. Ended up buying a couple for myself recently.

They look okay for a starter set. You can't really go wrong for that price, even if he quits eventually. However, you may want to consider going with a brand name like Wilson, Adams, Tommy Armour, Tour Edge or Top Flight. Those brands are good value picks for beginners. They should be of higher quality than a set from "Prosimmon," and last longer if he does end up sticking with golf.

Wilson set

Top Flight

EDIT: Regarding the length of the clubs - Being tall does not always mean the player should get longer clubs (irons). It is all about the length of the person's arms compared to their height. If he is tall AND has long arms, he will use standard length irons. If he is tall and has short/regular arms, then he may need a 1'' extension on the irons. The driver and wedge length are the same for everyone. You might not need to worry about this now. If he ends up taking golf seriously and is over 6'4'', then he should get fitted eventually for longer irons.

good luck

I got mine from Amazon. I love this driver, it's light and has a nice sweet spot. You will love it, it's even cheaper now, I got mine when it was still $117.00

$80 shipped but if you open up a amazon rewards card which takes 1 minute, you get $30 off your first purchase. Comes to $50 with free shipping. There are other styles available.

If you're just a beginner golfer, I'd go with the 2011 Wilson Prostaff (4). Since your budget is about $300-$350 you've got some room to play with. So replace the driver and the putter (only if you really want to). Before you start investing into this, just make sure its something you'll want to do for a long while. After you develop your skills more, buy some wedges. After that, maybe save some more money and buy better irons.

It would be a waste to spend $500+ for expensive clubs to just have them waste away in a garage.

EDIT: Sorry, saw that this set does not include a bag or putter. Looks like you'll have to get these with the remainder of your budget if you go with these.

Walter Hagan $175 + tax FS

Wilson Ultra $199 + tax FS

Top Flite aka Callaway $199 FS

Remember you'll need all the accessories too like shoes, clothes, balls, divot etc so fit these in your budget.

Great deal for a good starter set

I just bought these late last year and I love them. Forgiving and they honestly added 10-15 yards per club

u/Rob_035 · 1 pointr/golf

On a shoestring budget you’ll have to know that you probably won’t get the latest and greatest clubs, but you can certainly still get some sticks that’ll work.

Keep in mind the recurring costs of the game with your $140 initial budget (balls namely, tees to a lesser extent, green fees etc.)

There are some box sets of clubs that are pretty cheap. Wilson, Nitro, for example.

You can also try and piece together a set from goodwill, lots of people donate their older clubs and they sell them back for pennies on the dollar.

u/Squirrels122 · 1 pointr/golf

Going to need to define what "cheap" means to you? < $300? Do you want a full set or an iron set?

There are the typical $200-$400 Strata/Top Flight full sets which may be what you are looking for.

A slightly better full set is this: Cobra Fly-Z XL

With all that said, I would recommend getting used clubs from 3-5 years ago from places like 2nd Swing. The quality over a top flight combo vs legit brand is noticeable and can make a difference.

I bought this set for my wife last summer when she wanted to try it. She loved playing and already moved out of the set. She's 5'8" and these were a little short for her. All in all they did the job of seeing if she would like to play without breaking the bank.

u/Kkayang · 1 pointr/golf

Someone mentioned the Callaway Strata set, which I agree is probably one of the best full-set alternatives at 11 clubs for $286. I've used this set before and it is all good except for the woods, which are just not as durable as premium clubs.

First off, you folks are just... just... I love every part of you. You guys are some sexy, debonair, delicious pieces of humanity (and I mean that in a relatively heterosexual fashion). When I envision 186394 think of this and when I visualize rasta2645 I almost always come up with this(sorry, the rasta gets me every time).

I dreamt big (your fault, 186394), whence upon this metal tool appeared. Not because I really truly need it, but because father's day is around the corner and why not think of one's self two or three days a year?

C'mon...gimme. But seriously.... thanks for doing what you do. You guys make this place fun.

The Wilson Staff D-100 4 hybrid is $52 on Amazon and has free shipping http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B2JFKOO?vs=1 I have the 3 wood and absolutely love it.

u/buzzly_ · 2 pointsr/golf

Thanks! I'm also considering just buying a new complete set. Which of these two sets do you think is better:

Winfield VERTEX @ $160

Top Flite XL @ $170 including discount

And do you think it is worth shelling out some extra money for one of these sets as opposed to the used clubs I mentioned? I'm willing to spend extra if it's worth it.

Also a very good deal, for just $249. Wilson Staff is underrated in my opinion, and even though I don't play them, I'd damn sure recommend them as a dirt-cheap, great bang-for-your-buck set.

I've got a Nickent 3DX 4 degree hybrid. I love it. I get better results with this cheap club than I do with my Taylormade R11 3 degree.

I have a similar one from Amazon. It is $28 new, but that one in the pick looks new as it is, so I say it's a win.

I bought these a few months ago. Got them for $199 at the pro shop where I was taking lessons.
