Don't buy a kit! They sell you all kinds of shit you won't use when there are better options for similar money.

Get a brewing bucket as if you don't have a bottler then this will make your life so much better.

Get 2 carboys (glass is best but better bottles will work too). Check Craigslist for these...you can get some awesome deals.

Get 1 Refractomoeter instead of a hydrometer because they use WAY less of your must to calculate and they aren't mega fragile like hydrometers are.

You will want an auto siphon

You will want a carboy brush that fits on a cordless drill because cleaning a carboy without one fucking sucks (and for 18 bucks this is a no brainer).

You will need sanitizer. I personally like Iodophor because it's super cheap, it doesn't really foam up and it lasts forever. I bought one of THESE bottles like 2 years ago and it is about half full even though I brew between 50-100 gallons a year.

I always advocate people start with beer bottles rather than wine bottles. The reason for this has less to do with the bottles and more to do with equipment. The Ferrari Bottle Capper is 14 dollars while a good floor corker for wine bottles will set you back 60 bucks. In addition, it's cheaper to bottle in 20 ounce beer bottles with caps rather than in wine bottles with good corks. Use of a double lever corker for wine bottles should be considered a war crime...seriously...unless you're a masochist who loves dumping wine everywhere and having to clean it afterwards...then just avoid them...they are absolutely awful.

If you go the wine bottle route then NEVER use agglomerated or colmated corks (the ones made from tiny pieces of cork glued together) as they fall apart and will leave chunks in your bottles. In addition they don't age well, so you are much more likely to lose your brew to spoilage. I like synthetic Nomacorc but you can also buy very good quality solid natural corks as well.

Good oxygen absorbing bottle caps on the other hand are mega cheap. Again...this isn't about one being better than the other, so you can use either one.

For wine bottles, I REALLY like the ones with screw tops because they make it nice and easy to cap your bottles once opened. But for all of your bottles buy these locally...shipping will double or triple the cost of these vs buying locally. I get them for 15 bucks a case a few miles from my house...they're almost 30 a case on Amazon or close to that from Midwest or from Ohio (shipping is like 11-15 dollars a case.)

For beer bottles...I prefer clear, but they'll be tough to find locally so I often end up with brown ones. Again...buy these locally not online due to shipping costs. Your local brewing supply stores buy these pallets at a time so even Amazon can't compete with the lack of shipping costs.

Oh that is so exciting! Did you move from your city/state, or did you just buy a house in the area you already lived? I'm currently renting, but hope to buy a house once I've moved to another state. Home decorating is so much fun. It's like playing the Sims. I'm totally down for this, so excuse me if I link several things:

Wall Art:

If you're a fan of horror, there is this beautiful frankenstein and his wife wall art

Not sure what room you might hang this in but, beautiful regardless

I saw you said that you like cows, and thought this would be a fun piece to hang

Lighting:

This REALLY cool vintage metal pendant light

This cieling spider lamp fixture (not really a spider) would look amazing in your bedroom or livingroom

But of course, we can't forget some proper lighting for the kitchen, with this hanging glass ball edison pendant

A Few Misc, But Fun Selections:

the paper towel holder you didn't know you needed

a wine holder, because cows

to commemorate your new home

everyone needs coasters

Last but not least, some fun shower curtains:

fear and slothing in las vegas

it's so wrong it's right

bc who wouldn't want a cat riding a narwhal

shark it to me

Have fun filling your new home! May you make many new memories, good luck!

Coming from a newly married dude, two schools of thought.

  1. One larger gift like a tablet or something. Apple watch would be cool if she has an iPhone! I plane to get this one for my wife:
    https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Smartwatch-Aluminum-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B01N9X7WM6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1494182765&sr=8-1&keywords=apple+watch&linkCode=ll1&tag=firstvictory-20&linkId=971f87f0d91701ed3003fee4a1711f3f

  2. Go with the creative route. Get a few small gifts and sort them into a box or basket and keep it simple with some unique stuff. Will probably come out cheaper if you are a baller on a budget. Some ideas you could combine:

Cool box (I just gone one):
    https://www.amazon.com/Primitives-Kathy-Single-Bottle-Holder/dp/B00UNJ091S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00UNJ091S&pd_rd_r=923TQZ26XRPSJ3Y7QC7S&pd_rd_w=BDpTo&pd_rd_wg=TsYTK&psc=1&refRID=923TQZ26XRPSJ3Y7QC7S&linkCode=ll1&tag=firstvictory-20&linkId=d7b5b909c28c52100cf8f90dd12165f6

    If she likes wine:

A cool picnic set for the summer (I think this is sweet):

Yes these are affiliate links, don't be alarmed. If it helps you out at least you can look around Amazon and check out stuff related to this. Hope it helps!

OH EM GEE WWIINNEEEE! I love wine. Crisp, dry whites. Reds with hints of pepper and oak. mmmmm. The boyfriend and I are actually looking into making our own. Grapes yield such joy. Off my wishlist, good grief, here is a wine rack and here are some stoppers.

Something that made me happy this week... Found out Kate Nash is coming to one of my favorite clubs the same week as I'm doing my next half marathon. So now I've taken that whole week off work and am going to be the happiest Kim ever. C'mon November!

Thank you for the contest!!

If you're wanting to buy something free standing online, we got ours from Amazon from a company that makes the in Oregon. They sit in an alcove of our basement. They have been great. I love them. They're attractive, sturdy, easy to assemble, and good quality. It's been holding up very well, and we've had them for a few years. http://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Rustic-Super-assemble-Oregon/dp/B004KM7LGU/ref=sr_1_21?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1457701651&sr=1-21&keywords=wine+racks+free+standing+floor

Since the most wonderfull /u/Lauran2323 has summoned me, I'll list what I have in my place that I find super useful.

I have this in the kitchen, it holds the microwave and our champange and wine

I think it's a very cool tissue holder

You want this always readily available to you or a guest

Holds even more wine and double as a buffet in your dining room

Fans are huge if you want to save money by using an A/C less

Just to keep things organized on the fridge

It drives me nuts when people open letters like a christmas present

Also some sort of nice smelling candle - it'll make the place feel more like home.

As far as saving money - the urge to order out is immense. Try and cook as often as possible, it's cheaper and healthier. Except on Fridays. On Fridays you can eat pizza!!!!!!!

u/story_brooke · 1 pointr/wine

Moet & Chandon Imperial is a good choice and it's not that bad in price, either. As for a complimentary gift... CHEESE! Or if she likes pasta, make her a dinner and a have wine night :)
These are also good finds that go with wine!

cork/bottle opener

[napa wine chiller] (https://www.originalbos.com)

cork holder

I bought the 'B' Letter and mine is filling up! The napa wine chiller works amazing too!

I have a bunch of these in my basement (also has pretty perfect temp/humidity). They are “plain” out of the box, but very stable and effective. And they’re stainabale/paintable if that’s your thing.

I'm happy it's Friday! Tomorrow, Boyfriend and I are making a run of stuff to the new house. We ran out of plastic tubs a few days ago, so it was a nice excuse to put off packing for a few days. (And we have enough buffer that we're not at the "throw stuff in anything resembling a container!!" stage yet). Once we have done that, then there's only a little more of my stuff to pack and then a bunch of shared stuff (kitchen, etc), so I'm feeling pretty relaxed. I'm also still looking at what wine rack to buy for the house. Though it's a tiny (tiny) bit excessive, I'm leaning towards this one. It's a wine jail so it has an ornate door on it. I figure now is the time to (reasonably) splurge.

I'm 5% of the way through my "finish before I move" book. Still a ways to go, but progress. I'm also making 18 cat blankets for the local shelter. I'm on the final step of 11 of them and halfway through the other 7, so that's progress also.

So, yeah, I'm looking forward to continuing to plug away at the moving prep "to do" list

I LOVE BOOKS!!

My favorite Western decor is pallets. Yup. Pallet furniture, chests, shelves, anything re-purposed. And horses! :D Best part? You can make it all yourself.

Don't call me Mad Dog.

u/TheThunderbird · 9 pointsr/Frugal

I never would have spent this much, but had I bought it all new, I would have expected to pay around $8000-10000, but a lot of that is from the two chairs at $1800-2500 a piece and the speakers at $1500 for the set. I also furnished my bedroom with stuff from craigslist, so I probably saved at least a few grand total.

From the other thread, here is the approximate breakdown (all prices total):

u/bruxbuddies · 2 pointsr/RATS

Awesome! Also, I have seen people use those circle-type hangers for scarves as climbing material. Something like this. I guess I would just double check that the holes are large enough that they won't get stuck (seems big enough).

Also sometimes people use wooden wine racks (like this or this) as climbing structures. You can spray wood with vinegar/water and leave out in the sun for a few days to refresh them after a week or two (whenever they get stinky!). Those kinds of things are good for the free play area if they don't fit inside the cage.

u/BYE_FUHLEESHA · 2 pointsr/wine

Just to offer a suggestion, I bought this wine glass drying rack earlier this year and it's pretty awesome! I can't fit my glasses in the dishwasher and this helps them dry quickly and spot-free.

Also, this brush kit works great, too.

u/gimar · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

I say let the whole thing be your bar since it looks perfect for it, with the stemware racks, etc. I like the idea of wine crates or a peg wine rack like this one configured to fit the space, or maybe half of it with a shelf on top for various other accessories like a bottle cooler/ice bucket, etc.

You don't even have to fill it with wine, just a few bottles, maybe some mixers for all the liquor.

u/TacoBot-3000 · -1 pointsr/wine

There's a ton of info on /r/wine already, but it boils down to stable temperature (minimal fluctuations), stable ground (no vibrations - so not the fridge), and how long you plan to store. I've kept a rack of about 30 bottles in my closet with no problems. The temperatures swing more wildly than yours (I don't have AC), but it was about 65-85 generally. I only kept bottles in there for 2 years max. So, tl;dr, you'll be fine. A little too warm to drink, but it shouldn't spoil.

If you can find a corner that's out of the way, you can put some styrofoam shippers for better insulation in there stacked up. This is the rack I use. I also just got this fridge from Walmart. My plan is to save a little each month until this breaks, and then upgrade from there.

Socks, I got a custom cow lunch bag from this shop on etsy, wine bottle holder, I bought a solid lanyard and this cute cow ribbon from etsy and made my own cow lanyard but the ribbon isn't available anymore. But there's a lot of other cute ribbon. Or a key fob, wallet

I have the perfect picture and it so happens to be on my wish list!! This is the silliest giraffe themed item I've ever seen! You need to have one of these.
