I’ve been freezing yeast for a couple years. The process in that link is a lot more complicated then it needs to be.

I use a variation of this process.

  1. Build a 2L starter like normal.
  2. Once Fermentation is complete cold crash and decant.
  3. Fill 3/4 of a preform, lightly screw on the cap and place in the fridge.
  4. Revisit the next day and decant till you have 1/2 filled with compacted yeast.
  5. Top off with 1/2 Beer, 1/2 food grade glycerin.
  6. Screw on lid, label, shake and place in freezer.

    Tips
You’ll want to be as sanitary as possible.
I can reliably fill 4 soda preforms.
I’d recommend one have a different color cap to let you know you’re almost out of that particular yeast strain.
I keep the beer/glycerin mixture in a mason jar and bring it to a boil from time to time since you won’t use as much of it as you’d expect.
    Save used preforms to re-use.
Only do this for yeast you’ll use or have a hard time getting ahold of. You’re not saving money by saving yeast you’ll never use.
If I plan on reusing yeast within 6 months I’ll wash the yeast and place in a mason jar.
In my experience it takes the yeast a day or two longer to wake up once pitched into a starter. Make sure you build that time into your brew schedule.

Those bottles are called a Boston Round. Not sure if there's a better source for the caps, but Amazon has them for $0.39/each (if you buy 12 dozen of them.)

safe as it was new. just a protip, you can pickup a 'cork' that fits the 14mm joint size easily, to avoid needing rubberbands etc...

Like u/fuckernaut said soda preforms. You can reuse the preform and buy replacement caps. I’ve also though about using 4 oz mason jars since everything is reusable.

That is exactly how I wash all my boston rounds. I want everything that comes my way to get a thorough washing, and I know a lot of people here are weird about soap. I fill up a big pot with water, with the boston rounds standing up inside, then put it on the stove and let it boil. Like u/FlavSec says, I just turn it off when it gets violent and they start clinking.

While those are boiling I let the caps all soak in hot water, and maybe switch out the water a few times to keep it hot. I find the caps are the ones that still retain a faint peat smell sometimes, so I will either only reuse those for peated Scotch, or if it's bad enough I have a bag of caps and would just replace it. I think the bag of caps is good to have anyway, to replace a broken one or those shitty flat gasket ones.
