It is metal, yeah... but the links are so tiny that the effect is highly "smooth" with no edges at all. It's like a REALLY fine chain mail. And it bends easily so will tend to move away from any pressing against a surface.
While my laptop has a plastic top (Latitude 7370) so far I have yet to scratch anywhere on it even with my heavier metal band (stock one on the PTS). Unless OP is using a particularly soft metal laptop I am not sure I see a problem. Yeah, if you put all your weight on your wrists while typing then there is a possibility that you might scratch it, but I think it's a bit of a stretch.
For OP; any particular reason you wouldn't just put a palm wrest protector on your computer? Assuming a Mac there's this for example, but there are others for other makes and models... and you can even just buy the material and custom-cut.
This is on my default Household list and would be hilarious for my husband, please.

They ended up being these NIANPU Waterproof Vinyl Stickers off of Amazon and not the ones I thought I bought from Ebay. I should have looked more closely at the pictures lol because they very clearly show what kind of stickers are included. But I bought it with a lightening deal for like $4 so I can't complain and there wee a lot of cool ones too.
I have two on my new car wishlist (I just got a new car last week so I put a few fun things on there One thing i bought on prime day haha) I got so excited for the Planet Express Decal and then of course I need a Join the resistance one my car is named Leia after all!

So yeah. I bought these stickers you put on your keyboard. Full disclosure, I'm super OCD about keeping things nice. And I hate how, hours after you buy a new MacBook, the keys get all shiny from oils on your hands.
Anyway, I think it's neat to see the keys that I type so often. The shitty part is that these stickers sucked so bad, they started to turn white like this within hours of applying them.
I am a coder. So I use a keyboard more than usual. But don't buy these unless you want your own heat map. Even casual users would notice this issue within a few days at best.

Would an electric be too much for a 6yo? I'd rather give him a 1/2 or 3/4 black, acoustic nylon-string guitar: it's gonna be cool because it's black, it's easy to use, strings will not destroy his little fingers, and you can buy him a pack of cool stickers so he can give it a personalized touch ;)
