I strongly recommend http://www.santacruzstrength.com. Here is how I would approach this path.

1st layer: Increase your ‘movement baseline’ — that means walking 10,000 steps per day, doing challenges like the 30/30 squat challenge and the 7/30 hanging challenge, stretching/limbering all the time. Use this YouTube playlist I’ve made for my personal training clients. Go on explorative walks and hikes in the outdoors.

2nd layer: Begin a structured strength & conditioning program using elementary gymnastics/calisthenics mixed with barbell training and high-intensity conditioning efforts such as hill sprints. Do this about 3x per week. (good coaching is absolutely imperative for this stuff. Go to Santa Cruz Strength linked above and they will set you up).

3rd layer: Develop a movement practice/hobby. Take a few months to attend 3-4 weeks of classes or focused practice in any movement modalities that have low injury risk and are practical for daily life, for example: brazilian jiu jitsu or MMA (http://kaijinmma.com or http://claudiofrancabjj-santacruz.com), dance of any kind, rock climbing (http://pacificedgeclimbinggym.com), and on and on... give stuff a chance, be in the moment and embrace the fact that you will suck for a while but practice pays off and things become fun.

Zero'th layer: Dial in your nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle/stress-recovery. The single best place to start is here: http://www.amazon.com/Your-Personal-Paleo-Code-Reverse/dp/031632289X and the author’s website http://chriskresser.com

Finally — enjoy the process, be in the moment. Track progress if that motivates you but put too much focus on metrics, go by how things feel and use your intuition (evaluate before, during, and after every single action, was this beneficial/skillful, and be pliant/agile/mindful enough to ruthlessly adjust). My favorite single resource for ‘getting your mind right’ is http://www.dhammatalks.org/mp3_index.html

You are lucky to be in Santa Cruz while embarking on the health and fitness journey. I think it’s a place that can foster this kind of transformation like few others. Let me know if you have any questions about the above-mentioned, I’ll be happy to offer further suggestions or clarifications based on more specific details about your situation

I swapped to the Keto diet and implemented Intermittent Fasting about a month ago. It is completely opposite of everything I've ever done diet-wise, but I'll be honest, I'm seeing great results on it. I'm down 15lbs in 3 weeks, which is just insane because before I'd struggle to lose 1lb. I would suggest Simply Keto by Suzanne Ryan as a great starting place to understand what Keto is and how to approach it. It has some really great recipes in it as well and my husband and I pick from it every week to build our meal prep.

I love the Keto Chili and the Grilled Chicken & Bacon Ranch Kabobs. So good!

I'm looking at my stack right now! I live in an urban area with an extensive public library system, so I've definitely benefited from that!

  1. The "I Love My Instant Pot" Keto Diet Recipe Book - I will buy this book after I have to return it! The nutrition info is clear and easy to understand, the recipes range from simple (Cabbage + butter in bowl) to intermediate (Chipotle pork chops) and use the Insta in more ways than just pressure cooking. We're in the middle of a kitchen remodel and have limited use of the kitchen, and this has been a lifesaver!!!
    https://www.amazon.com/Love-Instant-Pot%C2%AE-Keto-Recipe-ebook/dp/B078M5KPZ4
  2. Craveable Keto Cookbook - Good nutrition info, lots of more complex recipes. These are all intermediate+ recipes, to me meaning there's more steps, more ingredients, and it looks fancier when it's done. If you like the experience of cooking, like chopping and measuring, this is my favorite.
    https://www.amazon.com/Craveable-Keto-Low-Carb-High-Fat-Wellness-ebook/dp/B07912X9GG
  3. The Keto Reset Diet Cookbook - Similar amount of effort as Craveable Keto above, meaning there are more ingredients and steps, and this one has more variety including different spice/cuisine styles. For non-picky eaters.
    https://www.amazon.com/Keto-Reset-Diet-Cookbook-Ketogenic-ebook/dp/B07912XCJ9

These are the three I like best and would purchase, and now probably will since I went and found them on Amazon ;). Others have good recipes but don't provide nutritional info or are some variation of the above. Also, special shout-out to the Keto Made Easy magazine I saw at Sam's Club.

There's a keto version of just about every dessert out there. If you are able to bake and cook and follow recipes, a good place to start is Carolyn Ketchum's Easy Keto Desserts. Also see Pinterest and /r/ketorecipes/. There are some really simple keto desserts out there that you don't even need to be much of a chef to make, and basically just involve mixing together 3-4 ingredients.

If you aren't someone who cooks or bakes, there are a lot of great keto sweets on Amazon, or you might even have a local bakery that does keto desserts. Also check out the Quest line of products to sate that sweet tooth, but those might be better for a cut or maintenance since all the protein and fiber will fill you up pretty quickly. Although all of this can get expensive quickly so you're better off cooking yourself if you make a lot of keto sweets.

This cookbook has a great carrot cake cookie! It also includes the buttercream frosting recipe.

In fact, this cookbook is pretty fantastic in general. We received it as a gift after my oldest was diagnosed with T1Diabetes. Now my husband and I follow low carb with her - 90% of the recipes we found to be pretty enjoyable.

u/ThunderBreeze · 3 pointsr/keto

Well what's your ultimate goal?

I would recommend sticking with keto for a full month to see how you feel mentally and physically. Definitely try some new recipes! I'll edit this post with a free recipe book as soon as I find the link.

Never fail to remember that a ketogenic diet can be a creative diet. I have fun when trying to make/order my meals.

This is my favorite cookbook I've used so far.

As far as general advice, shirataki noodles and cauliflower rice are your friends when you're craving starchy foods.

I start each day with a smoothie that's 2 cups spinach, 3 scoops protein powder, 2 cups unsweetened coconut milk(carton), 1 tablespoon chia seed, liquid stevia to sweeten, and a crazy large heaping of cinnamon to top it off. That gets me 60g protein right away and it's easy to hit that daily macro just eating the way I normally would after that.

I hope that helps!

My dietitian is guiding me through low-fodmap and recommended this book. It’s been a life saver. It’s scary when you’re steadily losing weight and not trying to. I’m 5’8 and 122lbs with hardly any muscle. Was diagnosed with gastroparis, Gerd, depression/anxiety, and hyper mobility injuries. It’s been a rough past two years.
I hope the book can help you out too. It’s an easy read which makes it easier.

So this is actually a cook book. But it has a lot of good info about the keto diet in general, common keto ingredients and lots of good recipes. Not to mention it's very well put together, the photos are beautiful. And the price has dropped!

Autoimmune diseases are all associated with inflammation, and inflammation starts in the gut..many neurotransmitters are created by gut microbiota and most of our immune system actually resides in the gut:

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/research/advancements-in-research/fundamentals/in-depth/the-gut-where-bacteria-and-immune-system-meet

The latest research also shows that the brain and gut communicate through the gut-brain axis so the state of your gut health has an effect on mood disorders and behavior.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5772764/

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/scientists-find-possible-link-between-gut-bacteria-and-depression-180971411/

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/06/gut-bacteria-on-the-brain/395918/

I have been able to partially re-pigment my vitiligo (I'm about 50% repigmented after a year) by eating a Paleo AIP diet with particular focus on my gut microbiome. I also completely reversed my Crohn's symptoms and depression during this time period. Though it's entirely possible to heal on your own (if you have the time and energy to devote to a lot of reading & research) the alternative is to find a good functional medicine doctor, preferably one that has an understanding of ancestral health with a track record of treating people with autoimmune conditions. If you can't find someone who fits that criteria locally many work remotely and can order tests and bloodwork without an in office visit.

Conventional medicine doctors have no training in health, only in acute care and managing the symptoms of disease. They prescribe medications and refer to specialists but will never help you get to the root cause of your problem (s) because that is not what they are trained to do. Shocking but most doctors take one class in nutritional science and that is the scope of their knowledge on the subject. Our acute care medical system is great for broken limbs, surgeries, or treating life threatening infections but completely useless when it comes to healing long term, chronic conditions.

There is a lot of great information online but books are often a more condensed and targeted source of information that help you avoid the needle in the haystack frustration. I found a lot of help and useful information in these books in particular:

Keto-fied on my cooking list, because its a nice keto cookbook, i love his website he always has awesome recipes without going to fancy or silly in the ingredients

A room without books is like a body without a soul

This cookbook has so many amazing recipes in it that it has become a staple for cooking in my house. My top favorites are the chili, dahl, confetti rice, curried quinoa, spinach/avocado soup, red beans and rice, and steak. Not only does it provide healthy recipes, but also a lot of information about what exactly is so healthy about the ingredients in these meals. Absolutely amazing.

Since your boyfriend is so smart, buy him a copy of "Eat Rich, Live Long". https://www.amazon.com/Eat-Rich-Live-Long-Mastering/dp/1628602732

It makes a great case for why Keto works and the science behind it... It might just change his mind.

Here's one that already exists on Amazon - The Keto Cookbook: Innovative Delicious Meals for Staying on the Ketogenic Diet. What makes you think by smacking on reddit, it'd sell more?

u/HopefulZoey · 2 pointsr/keto

I am getting ready to start this diet - I bought this book and it explains everything pretty well and has a large amount of recipes to get you started

u/Rymah · 2 pointsr/keto

we do use almond flour a lot, my wife and i are following the keto in 28 book's meal plan (http://www.amazon.ca/Keto-28-Ultimate-Low-Carb-Weight-Loss/dp/1942411294/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1454085047&sr=8-31&keywords=keto+books) until we can figure it out on our own. a very good point on the eating out though i will have to go back and add all that in to do a true comparison!

u/oggusfoo · 1 pointr/keto

The question was genuine. I bought a keto book that is targeted to kids who are trying to come off medicine for seizures which has a whole bunch of recipes with a 4:1 (80/15/5) so I was aware of other ratios being out there. I just didn't want to short change my body of protein (6 weeks after ACL surgery) but the only thing I found that with high protein and low fat is the deli roast beef from Costco (and now I'm concerned about hidden carbs in that).

edit: I was hoping you would say a lot of people do 70/25/5 because that seems to be what I'm eating now.
