🎓 Reddit experts on magnifiers
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where magnifiers are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
At first it was a bit strange since it's a new UI, but I like it and actually find it pretty intuitive (the only thing I did find very out of place was the S-break being R1 rather than triangle), but after literally only 3-4 battles I'd settled in.
I guess I can understand why people might have a hard time seeing the numbers but honestly I didn't have any problems with it. At first I had to actually "find" them, but once I knew the new home of the respective HP/EP/CP gauges/numbers I was okay.
If it's any help my friend has awful eye sight and uses a cunningly placed magnifying panel (like the kind you can get for books/kindles, similar to this) to help her see HUDs/UIs for video games, with the bottom right location of the UI in Cold Steel III I imagine this would be pretty easy to rig up without blocking much of the screen.
Do you have a decent soldering station with a fine (ish) tip? The best tips for removing bridges have a reasonably large flat area. Cover all the pins in flux. Then clean the tip of your iron (I like the brass sponges) and drag it over the pins. It should pull the extra solder off without much fuss while leaving the pins soldered.
For alignment a stereo microscope is the tits. Of course not everyone has or can get one, so the alternative is a cheapie USB microscope and of course some of these fashionable specs. On a package like this I'd start by tack-soldering pins on opposite corners (1 & 11 or 10 & 20) and then you're free to solder the rest without moving the chip.
Check out this EEVBLOG video. EEVBlog is excellent and I recommend you watch all of his fundamentals/tutorials videos, as well as whatever else floats your boat in his channel.
This one is quite good as well and more to the point. But for the love of god turn the sound off...
EDIT: Another
Not sure about helping you in your area, or groups or other things, but here's was my path, maybe you can borrow some experience?
When I was younger it was experimental science that really got me to understand what science was.
Simple things like making observations, observations lead to questions leads to experimenting, turning into predictions and knowledge.
Get a pocket microscope (Hell, I'll even buy this one for you amazon pocket scope thing ) They're fun and keep your mind interested.
I quickly realized that setting up experiments taking measurements, and then trying to use the measurements to predict future outcomes was the most amazing feeling.
I found that looking through books for the things that were learned in the order of which science learned it was really helpful.
I recently setup a test with my friends daughter, I built a small ramp, and a chute. We let hot wheels cars go down the ramp. Measure how far they went (5 times) then lifted the ramp 1 cm, rinse repeat
It was horribly bad, extremely rough numbers, but there was an obvious parabolic correlation to our numbers.
We covered:
she had the graph we made on her fridge for a couple months, she was quite proud of that.
Science is everywhere. Learn the basics, learn them better. Experiment, and publish back to here on reddit, could be fun for everyone!
Neat!
A hot air gun is all you really need to do SMD parts, though a hot plate or reflow oven (a toaster oven can also do the job) does make the process quicker. I recommend you get a decent set of ESD tweezers and a bright white LED light. Also one of these for smaller components (0603/0402).
If you want to make the process even more painless (especially for really complex boards) I also recommend getting a stencil for your board from OSHStencils (https://www.oshstencils.com/). Then you can just spread out the solder paste, remove the stencil, place components, and heat up the board.
Now that I've switched to making SMD boards its hard to go back. Reflowing is just so much quicker and easy than doing every pin by hand. And it results in smaller, nicer looking boards in my opinion.
Good luck!
Here's my list of tools. I and not any sort of expert and by no means claim it's the best, but I've been able to do mods successfully with it!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PVPJ44Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I think that's most of it...
If I had to do it over again I think I would buy this kit
https://www.esslinger.com/watch-repair-deluxe-watch-tool-set/
It has basically all the useful stuff short of a cheap amazon crystal press!
compass
If she doesn't have one already this compass is pretty good for the price. The professional surveying compasses are super nice but cost ~400 dollars. They are worth it but expensive. Her school may provide her with one.
A bausch and laumb hand lense ~40$
Rock hammer maybe. Or a really nice clipboard.
I've bought USB microscopes and a couple of those clamp-on lenses for my cell phone, but what works best for me is just holding one of these up against my Pixel 2 XL camera. You can slide your finger in the cover part and wear it almost like a ring and simply holding your phone with that hand will keep it over the camera easily.
I have cats, so I went with something a bit more stable. Luckily, I had amazon cash points so I used those and got it for $20
I picked this one because it has great reviews, a sturdy base and looks like it is bright enough with the light too.
Does anyone use magnifying glasses while building? I just started back into gunpla building (from a 15 year hiatus) and I found this item to be super useful:
Hands Free Headband Magnifying... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PZ6BB9Z?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’m just posting the link for discussion, not promotion. There are many different types of this piece of equipment. Hopefully some of you would find devices like this useful!
It looks like it could be a transfer onto enamel that was finished with watercolor and sealed, almost like a painted tile? Or an old hand painted plate? Either that or a painting someone did as a copy after the original probably to be sold as a souvenir, which would explain the different signatures.
The style too is indicative of a copy. Le Prince studied under Boucher who was a beast with super intense detail in terms of landscapes—painting out every single detail of the branches and leaves on trees. The style of the times was Rococo which was very fussy. He calmed down and became less fussy but the detail of this is blunted almost. Like a copy of the form but not the technique? If that makes sense?
If it is a painted print there will be a dot pattern somewhere from the transfer. An easy way to catch prints, even sneaky ones, is to get a loupe this is a fancier one, but any cheap one you can rest on the surface and look into will work.
I have used Hat Eyes for years and been very pleased. Secure attaches to hat brim with a metal clip and flips down for close up work, then out of the way for casting and far vision. Very adjustable to find the sweet spot for clear viewing. Magnification from 1.6x to 2.75x.

Amazon
There are reading glasses that have temples and one lens which flips over to allow people to put on makeup. Now most of them are of standard over the counter powers which isn't what you need, but if you call around to optical you might be able to find a frame that is optical quality that would be able to carry your power. The better option though is to talk to your eye doc to get your allergies under better control so that you can comfortably wear contacts with allergies.

I use this pretty much 7 to 8 hours a day for soldiering and electronic repair.
https://www.amazon.com/Beileshi-Magnifier-Professional-Interchangeable-Magnifying/dp/B00KAU5FSC/ref=sr_1_20_sspa?keywords=Magnifying+headset&qid=1567833767&s=gateway&sr=8-20-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySjdOUlFBWVQwUjZZJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzg1MDEyM0daSkhDQzZQTlVSUiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTYzMTk4MTQwVkdGSDBDN0NBRSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX210ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
I like it okay, as it's very light and small, I like that I can adjust the focal length to suit my needs in the moment. I pretty much find myself going between the 2.5 and 3.5x lenses depending on what I'm doing. I also like that it's fairly low profile, so if someone needs to talk to me, or I need to glance at a schematic I can look around the lens with great ease.
The cons? I've had this for around 3 months, and I can tell the plastic clamp that holds the lens on is getting a bit worn, although no failure yet. Also, the light is useless. It works alright when the coin cells are brand new, but they quickly drop off. Even when they are new, it's not as if the leds are worth the trouble of constantly changing the coin cells.
If you want to solve those problems, I also have used this one extensively:
https://www.amazon.com/MagniPros-Illuminated-Headband-Magnifier-Detachable/dp/B071GWM9QN/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=Magnifying+headset&qid=1567833767&s=gateway&sr=8-19
I like it, but it's a bit bigger than the one I have now, thus it's a bit harder to look around without moving the lens. However, the light works a LOT better, as it runs on aaa cells. I don't find myself depending on the light in the headset very often anyway, so it may just not be that important to me.
For reference, I'm doing some mount soldering, and a lot of very small cable terminations, and I'd say my head is usually able to get my object in focus at a foot to a half a foot with either of these headsets. At this point, I cannot do my job without this tool effectively, so I've been shopping around, and I've yet to find a version of this that is worth sinking any money into.
Hope this helps!
Found pretty close to what we use on Amazon
5X Desk Magnifier Lamp,Adjustable Swivel and Swing Arm Magnifier Table Lamp Light With Glass Lens and Bench Clamp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTSQYDF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_B61RzbHYP041C
Yeah our screen printer for smt has two shitty cameras for aligning the paste.. then Quality has two Mantis scopes.. 8x and 18x I think, they also have a z vision that they use on a pc monitor... my AOI machiene has the best camera in the shop tho, but it's gotta be since it's checking polarity, value, orientation, solder, ect... I think I can go up to 40x.. it's a little grainy at that magnification but you can get the gist of what ur looking at.
I'm going to have to check out LV website, Amazon doesn't have anything higher than 36g really.
Here's what's in my toolkit...
Polishing cloth
Fine Mesh Pads
20x Loupe
10x Loupe
! Canned Air
Cotton Tipped Applicators
Goulet Mylar Paper
Goulet Brass Sheets
Goulet Grip
Goulet Silicone Grease
! Careful with the canned air. It can be the cause of some funny and not so funny accidents.
A bright desk light with a magnifier comes in handy.
I use something like this. Had mine for a long time, but this appears to be the updated version. Love them!

This one. for $13. Works great!

Or... Better yet, a two-pack for $16.

Note, the cheap Chinese ones are nowhere near the magnification they're marked with--that is definitely not a 15X. I have a real 12X, and it's almost too much. There's a reason people usually stick to (real) 10Xs.
If you have the money, I would just recommend you a buy a real one from a reputable optics manufacturer. Realize that it will cost you ~$40 or more. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015A6OXOM/
Also realize that optical properties are interrelated, not independent. So the more magnification you choose, the smaller and darker the opening will be for your eye, the shakier everything will look from the shakiness of your hand, and the less depth of focus you'll have, so it will be harder to keep the tip of the nib at just the right spot. You'll also have a much smaller field of view, so you'll only be able to look at a portion of the nib at a time instead of a wider area.
The magnification just changes where the focal point is, not how much light is being focused. If you want more heat, you need to gather more light, necessitating a bigger lens. I bought that particular model and even though it's only 3X, it'll light twigs aflame in a few seconds. The credit-card sized units will make smoke, but not necessarily fire unless you're using good tinder.
