It's really dependent on the case, the cables you're using and personal preference.
The first two are hard to cover but I can go over some basics. If you have space behind your motherboard use it. Additionally, many cases with 3.5" bays have extra space to the side of them which is also great for tucking cables back.
Keep cables away and against the walls near primary airflow areas such as in front/behind fans, middle of the case and graphics cards. Use cable ties, velcro or Zip tie mounts (my personal preference) which come in various sizes and are relatively cheap.
Finally, personal preference matters because it isn't necessary to hide your cables. Most people do this merely for the aesthetics. What is (or should be) necessary is cabling for good airflow. You can have cables out and visible in the case as long as they do not inhibit airflow. This means keeping them along edges of the case and/or other obstructions that cannot be moved.
Pro tip: When using zip tie mounts get a roll of mounting tape and some reusable zip ties. Now if you reorganize or rebuild you can reuse the mounts/ties.
