Honestly, I don't get to check it very often because he won't let me. He's fine when a doctor does it but I can barely put it in before he swats me away. The one I got has a little picture chart to compare to, so that was nice. I think they key is to do it semi often, even when they're not sick, so you get some practice and know what it's supposed to look like and the kiddos get used to it. The one I'm linking came with 2 different sized disposable tips for adults and kids and was $40 but you can get different ones by the same company (Dr. Mom) for cheaper.

I really like this otoscope. It is small and fits in my pocket easily. The light is really bright too. The only downside is that the light is a little different color than your typical welch allyn otoscope (more blue), but it still works great! https://www.amazon.com/Generation-Dr-Mom-Otoscope-Disposable/dp/B00AJDZJCW/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1481424196&sr=8-1&keywords=dr+mom+otoscope

Decongestants. Heat on that side. Either a thermophore (moist heat), or a warm washcloth. That's if you actually have congestion in them. If they just feel stopped up, but aren't really - not sure what to tell you.

Also, get one of these. Obviously, you can't use it on yourself, but if you have a partner or friend who is willing to help you out, you can learn to see for yourself (secondhand, lol) what's really going on in there when you feel stopped up. I got one years ago to verify for myself what was going on when my kids were getting cranky or misbehaving - can't tell you how often it was because they had an ear infection, but weren't displaying typical pain or fever symptoms.

My LO is only three months, but my SIL with a 4 year old and 22 month old suggested I invest now in an ear scope like this one so that you can take a peek at home and if you see inflammation take him in to the doctor. If not, then you can feel more assured that he doesn't have an ear infection and he's just dealing with a cold, and since a cold is a virus all you can do is treat the symptoms anyway you're already doing what you can. She said it was also really useful for teething - one of her sons would only have a fever with an ear infection so this helped her know if his fever was an ear infection or teething.

the dr. mom ones seems to be the most common for home use:

if i decided to do this, i would take the time to study up on how to look and what to expect to see and do several checks when ears were in good shape. its just a matter of weighing whether the time + money is worth it to invest in order to have a better idea of what's going on without having to go to the doctor every time. And I also just wanted to see if any parents had done this and how it went.
