Looks like $30 is the regular price now! If only it were 230V...

You need to get one of these.

I'm going to add on to this as well. Quick note though, back in the day CC's were even cheaper than $0.50. You could go into an IRC and buy them for $0.05-0.15 depending on the card issuer and the limits on the card.

The multiple browsers thing I think is a pretty silly idea. It would just take one piece of trojan/adware to infect all the browsers on your machine. Regular computer scans are an absolute necessity and it would also be a great idea to have a monitor in place to monitor traffic more carefully.

Depending on the issuer, most places (At least in the US) have gotten very well at keeping their customers informed. Note, that this comes down to who issued the card. Chase is pretty good about it. Same with American Express and Discover.

Debit cards will usually have the same type of limits. Especially with a lot of high name Credit Unions. USAA, PenFed, and Navy Federal are some great examples and great credit unions to work with.

The other thing that I want to bring up is the people that are selling the CC's usually always have the same ideas on why they do it. They need to make money. A lot of them do and they resulted in this life and they got well at it. Their mindset was always "Well, their money is insured and so the person isn't actually going to lose a thing".

I've heard great stories about people being able to make their money back, but it is a process that will take a while and that's a huge thing that can add stress on to a person. I wouldn't say to completely stop using your debit card or credit card though. That insurance is there to help your ass come back if you need your money back. Imagine trying to get cash withdrawals and then saying that your money got stolen. You go to the bank and tell them that. What are they going to say?

As for passwords, it's always a great idea to have a password manager. I personally cannot recommend LastPass at all. I would recommend that people either user KeePass or BitWarden.

Use them to make sure that no one is going to randomly just guess your passwords on any of your accounts on the entire internet. It helps completely avoid password reuse as well which will help protect your identity more (At least on the internet).

I'm all for completely shredding documents. It's not the neighbors that you usually have to worry about. It's the people that snoop through trash at 3 AM in the morning. Ripping your mail in half is going to not stop a damn person at all. It will become a puzzle at that point to dig up information. You think companies trying to protect information just rip things in half? Absolutely not. Buy a nice Cross Shredder from Amazon and protect yourself.

Also, the random answers to questions are fine but for the love of god do not reuse the same answers. Write them down on a piece of paper and throw them in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box at your bank.

As for CreditKarma? Completely ignore that shit. I'm serious. If you're not expecting any new credit cards, bank loans, or anything; You need to freeze your credit accounts. The freeze I think is only $10 per bureau and they will stay on there until you remove them. That way nothing gets added to your credit report at all unless you remove the freezes.

Credit monitoring is basically an easy way to scam paranoid people. The freeze will be the only real thing that truly protects you.

One thing which a lot of Redditors do now is shaking ATM slots. Same goes for basically anything. Get in the habit of just shaking it a little before you put it in (No pun intended). If it's loose at all, then avoid it. (No pun intended again.)

I think I covered most of everything.

Very happy with their Paper Shredder, much less so with their poop bags (not reliably fully perforated).

>I don't know of a shredder that can take care of cardboard.

What? How is this the top comment?

I have a cheapo $35 shredder from Amazon that shreds cardboard just fine. If I'm doing more than a couple boxes at once, it'll shut off after awhile because it gets hot, but give it some time to cool down and it's ready to go again. I've been doing this fairly regularly for a couple of years now and it's still going strong.

The only caveat is that the slot to feed stuff in is small so I made it a little bigger, but it still worked before I did that.

A bit over reactive to use a felt-tip pin to block stuff out on mail.

You should just buy a shredder for $30: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-6-Sheet-Cross-Cut-Credit-Shredder/dp/B00HFJWKWK

Also, a tip on using store cards (you know how some stores demand a "club card" to get discounts) - when they ask for your phone number just tell them (area code) 867-5309. Someone already signed up with that number, it always works.

A locking mail box is also a great idea for the paranoid.

With this.

Mint, or just my bank statements for card spending. Cash spending ... eh, whatever.

Are you me? 6 years of CC authorizations just laying around. I told him I refused to throw them in the trash. This Amazon Basics Shredder is actually a great little shredder. I finally convinced his wife it was necessary. It's cheap but works great.
