Specs:
For most of our gigs we hire a sound and lighting company. They have far more (and better) gear than we ever will, and not having to set up/take down more stuff is awesome.
For smaller gigs, we have a fog machine, two Chauvet 4-Bar LEDs (Amazon Link) and a LED "Magic Ball" (Amazon Link). The 4-Bars are set up at the front of the stage at a 45, generally pointed at our singer. The "Magic Ball" sits in front of the kick drum. We also have a strobe that has an on/off footswitch controlled by the drummer, who also controls the fog machine (usually to excess, so we often threaten to take it away).
The 4-Bars are connected together and controlled by a footswitch that our singer controls. The "Magic Ball" is sound activated and generally follows the kick.
Throw in a large black curtain/sheet and our 3' x 10' band banner behind the drummer, and it's a (relatively) inexpensive setup that only uses a single 15-amp circuit.
No problem. If you really want it to synchronize to the music you can find stuff like this on Amazon too. Trust me though, that laser sphere is awesome and it randomizes enough that it really seems to dance with the music. Good luck with whatever you choose!
