I hope you'll have great observations with the telescope.
Sometimes you can get a bike trailer rather cheaply; Especially the ones for kids (or dogs...) can be nice as they have suspension.

I have one of the cheap bike hangers with jogger attachment (Link), it cost me $60 or so new at ebay; The cheap ones are probably nothing I would use for children, but for payload it's great :-)
A jogging Stroller might work too ;-)
Ask around (family, friends) or CL, you can often get them rather cheap.
Of course you could just use something like a cheap hand truck, golf bag cart... Just make sure it has big wheels and you somehow pad it from shocks.
