I would recommend you check out Sorastro's painting guides on YouTube. His method is probably the easiest way to get good a good quality paint job with minimal effort.

The steps are basically:

  • Prime it
  • Base coat it
  • Quickshade it
  • Optional highlights and other finishing touches

It's not the absolute best paint job possible, but it's a pretty good one for the effort and skill required.

As for paints and brushes and primers - there are a lot of options.

You'll want a primer that is meant for plastics. Most people go black or white, but if you're painting a lot of minis and want to save some time, get one in the primary color the models will be. This will make the base coating step much faster.

You could go with good paints, like Vallejo, P3, or Citadel. I prefer Vallejo personally, but any of them would do well. You could also go with cheaper craft paints. They'll probably be a bit granier but will be significantly cheaper. For example, a set of 18 Apple Barrel Acrylics will run you $18. This is about the equivalent of 62 Vallejo paints (in terms of quantity) but those are usually closer to $3 each (or ~$180 or 10x as expensive - get these at a local game or hobby store, they are like $6-7 on Amazon). Whichever one you choose - make sure to thin down the paints by adding water to get a good consistency - you don't want it to be too thick and obscure details.

In regards to how many - well, that depends on what you want to paint. It might help to plan out how you want to go about it and then just get the paints you'll need. I'd start with one project, see how it goes, and then plan to get any other paints you need for additional projects, especially if you go with the more expensive art quality acrylics.

For brushes, I recommend a size 2 brush. Most mini painters can do pretty much everything with a size 2. You can get an expensive Kolinsky sable one which will run you about $20 or you can get some cheaper ones that might be more like $7-8 or you can get really cheap ones which might have a pack of 5 or more brushes for like $5. I'd probably start with a $7 one see if this is something you really want to do or not. For the method I linked to above, they will work just fine. For finer detail you may need something smaller, but you could probably still get away with just the size 2.

I definitely prime the hell out of them (with spray primer, not brush) before trying to put any paint on.

Friend of mine (who is WAY more skilled at painting stuff than I am) told me to get this set of paints, which work pretty well.

Once I'm happy enough with the paint, I coat them with at least two coats of finish (matt or gloss, depending on what I'm aiming for).

No problems with flaking (so far), and I'm still a 100% amateur at painting, but I am pretty happy with how the big Green Dragon and Umber Hulk came out.

Biggest tip: Under no circumstances do you skip priming. Never. Ever.

You will be sanding a lot. Get a lot of sandpaper in varying roughness. I use 120, 220, 300 the most. I also just use wood filler from home depot to even out the surface: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-Plastic-Wood-32-oz-Natural-Latex-Woodfiller-00525/205337025
I smear some filler where I want it then dip my finger in water to smooth and feather it out. After it dries, sand it and repeat until you get the surface repaired to how you want it. Then prime it. I use spray can primer, either just normal or the high-build filler primer if there is a lot of small things I need to fill in but don't want to cover the whole thing in wood filler. Then sand it. Then prime it again. Then paint and sand as many times as needed.

For the projects I linked below I used cheap acrylic paints from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Barrel-Acrylic-PROMOABI-Assorted/dp/B00ATJSD8I/

It doesn't need to be the really expensive high quality paint, but of course the end result may look a bit better. I like these paints because they are inexpensive and they are a bit thinner, making it easier to work with.

Hi! I would like to enter my family in this contest. I recently purchased some wooden people of different sizes for me and my children to decorate during the holidays and I just realized I dont quite have enough acrylic paint nor do I have enough colors. So I figured this would be the perfect gift for my family! My 2 kids, Alex 12, Trinity 11, love to do art and that is my motivating factor to get them to do their chores! I keep lots of art supplies hanging around my room so they know once their chores are done they can do anything that want to, from making jewelry with resin, to creating a sculpture with polymer clay. We have fun creating and discovering what bright new things can be made all from using their imaginations!

I just want to thank you for offering this contest to families like mine. My kids dont go out very often due to me being disabled and not having a vehicle. Your contest helps people like me continue to keep my children entertained and happy.

My Momohime has the same hair issue as yours. What do you guys recommend to fix it? I was considering using enamel paint + a topcoat to get rid of the enamel shine or just go with acrylic paint (do i need a finish coat to protect acrylic paint?). I'm at my wit's end.

I can't remember the exact brand but just basic acrylic paint. Like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Barrel-Acrylic-2-Ounce-PROMOABI/dp/B00ATJSD8I/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1502720365&sr=1-4&keywords=acrylic+paint

I saw somewhere to go a shade closer to orange with the red, because the black finish under it darkens it. I think it turned out pretty well. A lot of people say to blob it in, and then wipe it away slowly with nail polish, I found that by the time I got to the paint remaining in the etchings, that it was mushy and would peel out. If you give it a try on anything, I recommend filling it and then scraping the excess off towards the closest edge with a business card or something like that. Made it a hundred times easier to get a good end result.

Sorry for your loss.

As this is for Halloween and not cosplay my answers will tend toward lower cost and easy, instead of a durable costume that will be worn repeatedly or entered into a cosplay contest..

  • Contact cement will hold EVA foam together, paint it on each side, let it dry then mash together. Follow instructions on what ever brand you buy.

  • paint can be as simple as hobby acrylic paint, brands like folk art or apple barrel in 2 oz squeeze bottles.

  • thickness of the foam is dependent on what part you are making and what the needs are. It can range as thin as a few millimeters that you can find in craft stores as craft foam up to thick sheets used as floor mats.

  • you can prep the foam surface for a smoother surface by using something modpodge or flexseal.

Note the links I provided was for amazon, but with some shopping about you should be able find most of the items cheaply in stores around. If you are in the US, hobby lobby, Michaels, and Walmart have the thinner foam and hobby paint. Thick foam can be found on sale at haborfreight, often for under 10 a pack. Coupons can always help.

I would consider cutting the thin foam into long strips and then painting them for the hair.
