Can you elaborate on how Honeycomb is like Windows, in a bad way? Is in the bar at the bottom?

Also, just to let you know, the Xoom ($479, 32 GB wifi), Transformer ($394, 16 GB wifi), Acer Iconia ($355) are all $100+ cheaper than the comparble iPad model. Whether or not any of these tablets are actually better than the iPad is up to the consumer to decide (I personally prefer my Transformer over my old iPad 1, but to each his own).

I'll post a few Android tablets and you be the judge of which one you'd like to investigate further:

1: ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101-A1 = $379.99

2: MOTOROLA XOOM = $419.99

3: Original Samsung Galaxy Tab = $314.95

4: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus = $399.99

5: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 = $479.99

Edit: As someone else mentioned, the Transformer Prime is almost out and it might be exactly what you're looking for. If you don't want to spend $500+ on the Transformer Prime though, I highly suggest looking at the slightly older Transformer TF101.

I would definitely suggest the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer - http://amzn.com/B004U78J1G

Amazon says it's Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) but once you get it, it should upgrade right to Ice Cream Sandwich (4.x)

This is not the new Transformer Prime (which is an even better tablet, but is about $600) -- for the heck of it, if you're interested it's here http://amzn.com/B0067PLM5E

If you're ok with used: Asus Transformer

Even though it's out of stock at the moment, I just placed an order on Amazon for it, supposedly they'll ship it as soon as they get more in. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004U78J1G/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Tablets usually have apps that are a lot different than windows. I don't think that there's any tablet that will give you as many programs and as much processing capability than a laptop. I think it's cool to have a tablet as well, but I would never suggest replacing your laptop with a tablet. Get another laptop.

I know from a friend with experience, you can't even play league on a netbook very well. (Your fps will be ~5.)
I do know of a tablet that "transforms" (you attach a keyboard) from a tablet into a keyboard and if you're just looking for something to do some basic word processing, listening to music, playing casual games (think angry birds and sudoku and maybe doodle jump), I would suggest that.
Unfortunately unless you're going to wait for the "Windows Surface" tablet to come out (which by the way, every other version of windows seems to be the bad one- the last one was vista...so 8 might be it), you should just get another laptop. There aren't any tablets (that I know of) that have just windows or mac OS on them, and even if there was, no tablet will have the amount of space (my tablet has about 32 gigs of hard drive space, my laptop has about 300) or processing power (my tablet runs on dual-core processors but it still crashes if I have too many tabs open on chrome while I'm listening to music and have other stuff running in the background) as a laptop.

Aaand for me, the biggest difference between using a laptop and a tablet:
1- The battery life. My laptop's battery is failing but I'm getting a new one. Which is also what's cool about laptops- they are infinitely more serviceable than tablets.
2-The way I sit. If I'm using my laptop sitting in a chair/couch, I can comfortably set it down on my lap or on a surface. But if it's my tablet, and I'm watching a video, it has to be kinda quiet in the room because the speakers are on the back. It can't support itself so (i don't have a base/stand for my tablet, but I could probably use one) if I want to use it without having to hold it up I have to prop it up against something or sacrifice the quality of the sound.

So yeah. If you're looking for a tablet to replace your laptop, I'd say just get another laptop. I don't think tablets are worth the money unless you have the money to spare to have both some form of computer and a tablet. But if you're still looking for a suggestion, I'd suggest this:

Good luck with your search!

I've been gming for years and years, and I use an Asus Transformer.

It uses the android interface, which is similar in style to the ipad interface, though not the same. You'll notice if you scroll down you can "buy it with" the transformer eeepad dock. I bought one of these and love the hell out of it. It is a backup battery/keyboard combo that allows you to type into your transformer like it's a laptop. it takes up very minimal space on a table or desktop, and has a touchscreen interface on the tablet itself. also access to the google play store.

i'm pretty sure the transformer is normally $400. here and here and here and here

I love my tablet. This is what I have: http://amzn.com/B004U78J1G

Along with the docking keyboard: http://amzn.com/B004U78628

I got mine on Craislist, practically brand new for $300 with the docking keyboard. So you might be able to find a good deal somewhere.

Here is what I use mine for:

  • Manga

  • Anime (stored on 16gb MicroSD I added - I also use the CrunchyRoll app as I am a member)

  • Japanese Video Games (I use GBA, SNES, etc emulators and download JP roms - the PS3 controller actually works too if you plug it in via USB! Though you have to have the docking station to plug it in)

  • Anki / Websites for studying (like iKnow.jp, Memrise, etc)

  • PDF's or Kindle books

  • Listening to JP music

  • Skype - Can text, voice, or webcam chat to JP friends

  • Lastly, general browsing of JP websites

In my opinion, it's an awesome tool. If mine broke right now, I'd buy another by end of day tomorrow. Though everyone is different. Make sure you're going to use it before you invest.

I'm in love!

I got this last week for my husbands birthday (Sept. 5 - He turns 24). He asked me for an Asus Transformer tablet. Now I want one! That thing is so fun. I preloaded it with a bunch of apps and will add some pictures and stuff to it tomorrow and ship it out to him on his ship so he can use it while he's deployed.

Do you have any items your leaning towards that you want to get him?

u/Sqube · 1 pointr/chromeos

Yes. I had the Asus Transformer TF101 with the keyboard attachment. Turns out a Chromebook is what I had wanted the entire time. It just didn't quite exist yet.

Microsoft's spin on the Asus Transformer isn't going to do it.

This is an attempt to replicate Microsoft's success at killing off the Linux Netbook, which was going gangbusters until OEMs started putting Windows on - and then the whole category abruptly died.

It won't work this time because: Chrome is now the world's most popular browser. All the web works with Chrome and not as well with IE or Edge. Mobile use has ballooned to where people use mobile primarily and desktop incidentally, and want a cross - platform consistent experience (which Microsoft, dead in mobile, can't offer). Android is king of apps now, and Google Play will be available on this years' Chromebooks, so all your favorite Android Apps will be there - and you don't have to buy them again, or search for them either - they're right there on your app store page. Android apps work seamlessly across platforms, so for example you can be playing Clash of Clans on Chromebook Android, pick up your mobile device and walk away still playing it without loss of continuity.

It's just another mess of short-lived junk you're embarassed about spending your hard-earned on a week later.

So even I told you I think that the iPad gives you the most for its cost, you would still say that their prices are ridiculous and you wouldn't pay them? That is incredibly close minded and shallow, you're obviously just hating on Apple without doing any research.
