Full Windows 8 (not RT), quad core, so anything windows works. comes with full latest ms office suite. screen/keyboard combo make for a great laptop that's portable and useful. hdmi out, 2 usb ports, sd card slot for expandable memory.

I own one of these and they're great. They even can handle some light gaming (Torchlight 2, Terraria, stuff like that!)
Just get an ipad and use either bamboo (free) for handwritten notes with a stylus, or use Evernote with the onscreen keyboard or a Bluetooth one. The best textbook apps are made for ios. If you want to get an all in one type deal so you don't need a tablet and a laptop, the surface might be ok but if you go that route your only option should be to get a pro. Other than that, my best recommendation will be to look into the asus t100 which is a tablet with full windows with a detachable keyboard. On sale as of yesterday, if you don't need it for anything too crazy, it's a good route to take vs the surface especially financially.
